The United Jewish Community, a non-profit organization, is the central coordinating body for fundraising, planning, allocations and shared services for the Jewish community. Together, the UJC/JFLV has raised well over $50 million to support Jewish causes in nearly 60 countries around the world, including, of course, America and Israel. Among the UJC/JFLV activities, programs and affinity groups mobilized for various segments of the communi-ty are the Community Relations Council, a southern Ne-vada Jewish community website (www.jewishlasvegas. com), Las Vegas Senior Lifeline, the Jewish Emergency Assistance Program, the Sperling Mack Kronberg Re-source Library on Holocaust Education, Women's Phi-lanthropy, Jewish Emerging Leaders and much more. And the place to keep up to date on all of these pur-suits, as well as other pertinent news, information and analysis, is the Federation's Jewish Reporter, available at synagogues and select Las Vegas outlets, or delivered to your home free of charge. In service since 1976, it's the most widely-read Jewish publication in the Las Ve-gas valley. Throughout history, from small towns to large cities, the custom of Jewish communities has always been to create a joint fund to care for its members. This practice guaranteed the privacy and dignity of those in need and also began the development of a cooperative structure for centralized giving. Today in Las Vegas, that fund is the UJC/JFLV's annual campaign. The UJC/JFLV is the place in southern Nevada where Jews come together to care for their own. C a r i n g for the most vulnerable is at the heart of this mission. To this end, the Federation ensures that needs are met, reaching out to the elderly, to those in need, and to those facing poverty and hunger. It's a lifeline that allows so many of our people to live with indepen-dence, dignity and hope. F o r the first time in the history of the Las Vegas Jew-ish community, all local Jewish Organizations and syn-agogues are eligible to apply for grants to fund specific programs and services that benefit the community on an annual basis. Israel and overseas Addressed through a series of community and chal-lenge grants, targeted funding and special projects, these allocation measures enable qualified programs and services to receive critical funding. All community members are encouraged to become involved and sup-port the annual campaign, which will then in turn sup-port the activities and services critical for a vibrant, col-lective Jewish Las Vegas. I t ' s a commitment that ensures that our heritage is passed on to our children, with the opportunity for life-long learning. The federation promotes and advances Jewish education by providing funding and program-matic support for formal and informal Jewish learning on all levels, including camp programs and day school scholarships. No child will ever be denied these experi-ences because his or her family cannot afford the cost. F u n d s are raised from a variety of sources. Some of these are the annual community and special campaigns, endowments, and grants from sources such as individu-als, foundations, the government and corporations. Through an annual commitment to the Federation's campaign, a difference can be made in many lives, con-necting individual acts of kindness for the spiritual re-birth of Jews everywhere. T h e endowment program of UJC/JFLV is a focal point for planned giving to the southern Nevada Jewish com-munity. Throughout the year, many individuals and families and their legal and financial advisors structure planned gifts that have met the donor's estate and tax planning challenges, providing significant resources for the future. With this distinction comes a myriad of problems that face senior citizens in the Las Vegas community who fall between the cracks of an already strained system of service delivery. I n response to this growing community need for seniors, the United Jewish Community/Jewish Federation of Las Vegas created a non-de-nominational program called Las Vegas Senior Lifeline that provides assistance to qualified seniors age 60 and over. L V S L initially received funding from the Administration on Aging. After providing over a year of social services to our senior popula-tion, UJC/JFLV secured a second round of federal funding and local matching funds to continue the successful services for LVSL clients. The dollars raised for this program are delivering a multi-tiered level of services that provide senior citizens the necessary tools and support systems to continue living an independent lifestyle in their own homes with an increased quality of life as they age in place. The goal is to fill many of the gaps that exist in the lives of our targeted senior popula-tion, enabling them to enjoy a greater quality of life and continued independent living. T h e majority of seniors choose to live the latter part of their lives in their own homes. The LVSL program goal is designed to enable a large portion of the senior population to receive services where they live and not be forced to move prematurely into institutional care. Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities is dedicated to demon-strating innovative ways to provide health and supportive services to senior citizens. The program will provide funds for the Jewish Fed-eration of Las Vegas to create and promote a national model that can be replicated in NORC communities throughout the country. Funding will allow the Jewish Federation to bring a wide variety of new sup-portive services to the seniors living in NORCs throughout the valley. The priorities of LVSL include developing innovative, cost-effective programs to make aging in the home a viable choice for seniors. T h e Alice and Harry L. Goldberg Senior Center of the UJC/JFLV is the center for the delivery of our multi-tiered level of services to the senior community. The creation of this senior resource center serves as the program's central location. Thanks to the generosity and good-will of the Goldberg family, the senior center has developed into one of the city's leading resources for senior support, information and ser-vices. It also functions as a central congregate meal site, which allows low income and/or isolated seniors to receive a nutritional meal while engaging in social interaction with other seniors. The congregate meal program includes an educational or recreational component. "Kosher Meals on Wheels" is another nutritional component service that LVSL provides. This component allows those seniors who follow the dietary laws of Kashrut to receive home delivered kosher meals to maintain a healthy and kosher life style. O u r senior transportation assistance program provides free trans-portation services for seniors to medical appointments, shopping and allows them to participate in programs hosted at the center. T h e LVSL medical assistance program assists seniors with the ever-skyrocketing costs of prescription medications and medical equip-ment. LVSL helps support the cost of medications, co-payments and equipment through a closely monitored system of criteria that take into account income, medical needs and emotional needs. S e n i o r environmental home improvement program provides quali-fied seniors who have become disabled making improvements in or-der to accommodate specific medical situations. Environmental home improvements such as wheelchair ramps, shower and bathtub grab bars are installed to enable seniors the opportunity to safely remain in their own homes for as long as possible. 1 he senior homemaker services assistance program is designed to enable seniors to continue living in their own homes. For individuals facing extreme medical and emotional crises, homemakers provide light housekeeping, laundry assistance and meal preparation assis-tance. The homemaker services program is coordinated through the Alice and Harry L. Goldberg Senior Center. L V S L also participated in a hi-tech senior home demonstration project. As a separate innovative project of LVSL, the "Hi-Tech Se-nior Friendly Home demonstration pilot project involved retrofitting a small number of homes in the greater Las Vegas community with experimental technology. In partnership with Intel Corporation, one of the nation's leading computer and technology corporations, and the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering of the University of Ne-vada of Las Vegas, this project study conducted research to determine needs for monitoring and support of seniors with dementia and other debilitating illnesses. LIFE IN SOUTHERN NEVADA S t i l l one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, Las Vegas also remains renowned as the "Entertainment Capital of the World." With so much more to offer even beyond the entertainment and gam-ing, from the very finest restaurants and hotels to world-class shop-ping and championship golf courses, it's no wonder that about 39 mil-lion visitors made their way to Las Vegas in the last year. And that's not to mention the average of more than 7,000 folks each month that moved to city limits during that period - totaling about 90,000 new residents or more. w e know why people come here to visit, but why do they come here to live? There are many possible reasons - no state taxes, a favor-able cost-of-living and consistent employment opportunities (recently only a mere 3.8 percent unemployment rate), greatly due to Las Ve-gas' continuing hotel construction boom. Or maybe it's the weather, the most popular factor taken into consideration when people are looking for a place to live. Las Vegas' annual average temperature is a comfortable 67.1 degrees, with more than 300 sunny days each year, while umbrellas are almost unnecessary, thanks to a minimal annual rainfall of only a little more than four inches to worry about. S o , of course, the Las Vegas real estate market continues its healthy trend, with sellers receiving 97-99 percent of their average asking price of about $340,000 for single-family homes. Rich with master-planned communities and affordable housing, plus parks, schools and shopping centers. Las Vegas is just a great place to live, for young go-getters to retiring seniors. Speaking of seniors, Las Vegas has clearly become a mecca for retir-ees, thanks to things like the aforementioned climate and low tax base. And there are plenty of new communities constantly sprouting that cater specifically to the senior population. Many local hotel/casinos also cater to seniors with low-cost food specials and free shuttle bus service from local retirement communities. A r o u n d the city's perimeter are some nearby and incredibly awe-some wonders of man and nature. To the northeast, it's the sensational Valley of Fire State Park. To the east, the Lake Mead National Rec-reation Area and Hoover Dam are the shining stars. Heading west, the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is always a hot spot, while Mount Charleston and Lee Canyon to the northwest of-fer year-round beauty, cool temperatures and seasonal skiing. Other famed outdoor destinations are less than a day's drive from Las Vegas as well, such as the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park and the Death Valley National Monument. N e w c o m e r s are often surprised to learn about Las Vegas' Jewish population. Forty years ago, the city had a total population of about 90,000. Today, Las Vegas is home to nearly that many Jews alone, supporting 18 synagogues. The truth is that Las Vegas is the fastest growing Jewish community in America, rife with young professionals working in fields such as business, medicine and engineering. A V h e n it comes to air travel, flying in and out of Las Vegas is about as easy as it gets in the country. McCarran International Airport, lo-cated five miles south of the city's central business district, last year ranked eleventh in the world and sixth in the USA for passenger traf-fic, with more than 46,000,000 passengers passing through the termi-nal. These numbers were partly made possible because of the airport's SpeedCheck kiosks, which allow passengers to obtain a boarding pass without having to go to a specific airline counter. Other kiosks operate at the busy Las Vegas Convention Center, where customers can also print baggage tags. And that's not to mention services available at the alternative North Las Vegas and Henderson Executive Airports. A n d then there are the city's educational institutions. The Clark County School District, the nation's fifth largest, now in its 51st year, educates more than 300,000 students in well over 300 schools. Add to that the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the College of South-ern Nevada (formerly Community College), the Las Vegas College, and seven private colleges, plus Henderson's Touro University, which houses a kosher kitchen for Jewish students. Las Vegas also boasts the best in Jewish day schools: the Desert Torah Academy, Solomon Schechter Day Shool, and the Milton I. Schwartz Hebrew Academy, which now also houses the Sheldon G. Adelson School, the only pri-vate Jewish high school in Las Vegas. A l l in all, it's no wonder that Las Vegas maintains its image as one of the country's top destinations for both visitors and people looking for a beneficial place to live.
