Perer, President This past year has been an exciting one in the Jewish world. We've seen all but a handful of Ethiopians arrive safely in Israel and the Russian immigrants continue to arrive - in decreased numbers, but steadily. In the midst of the fighting in Yugoslavia we air-lifted over 400 people out of Sarajevo. The JDC continues to operate there, performing heroically in dangerous conditions to make sure there's food, medicine and care available to all our people. Nothing is ever easy for us, but we can take pride in what we've accomplished this past year. I'm very excited about our new building. This has long been a dream of ours. Now, thanks to the generosity of Sharon E. Sigesmund, we can look forward to realizing that dream. Before the end of the year we hope to have the Jewish Family Service Agency sharing space in the building with us. Once we've actually moved into the building we anticipate there will be some space available, however modest, that can be made available to other Jewish organizations for special purposes. As time goes by, more of the currently leased space on the other floors will become available. That should give us the opportunity to begin providing new services to our community. It is my hope that one day 3909 S. Maryland Parkway will become the central address for Jewish activities and organizations in Las Vegas. This has been a difficult year, economically, for the whole country. We've had our share of reduced income as well, but we've managed to sustain our allocations almost at the same level as last year. Now, however, with the new building coming up, there's a renewed sense that we're moving ahead. I'm pleased to have been able to move the Federation forward. With the addition of a new Campaign Director I believe we'll see the momentum pick up and be in a better position to serve our community needs. BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR 1992 President Dr. Marvin A. Wishengrad ' Deceased A LETTER FROM OUR CAMPAIGN 1992 CHAIRMAN Stan Mallin, Campaign 1992 Chairman I would like to report to you on our 1992 Campaign. As of June 1st we have raised $895,858. We hope to meet our goal of $1.1 million by the end of the 1992 calendar year. I want to thank the Campaign Cabinet and all the other members of the Federation who worked on our Campaign. I also want to thank our contributors of many years standing. They are the bulwark of our Campaign. I want to extend a special thanks to the more than 400 first time contributors who have joined the Federation this past year. I know I speak on behalf of the entire Campaign Cabinet when I say that we hope 1993 will be a banner year and that it will exceed our 1992 results. 1992 CAMPAIGN ANALYSIS (as of June 1,1992) #0f 1991 Gifts # of CAMPAIGN: General Division Women's Division TOTAL $ 827,002 1005 $ 362,654 765 $1,189,656 1,770 1992 Gifts $578,288 817 $317,570 598 $895,858 1,415 OPERATION EXODUS I (1990 & 1991): $503,996 756 Gifts OPERATION EXODUS II (1991 & 1992): $704,259 593 Gifts 3 OPERATION EXODUS II (SOVIET JEWRY) Art Marshall, General Chairman Dr. Marina Plon, Program Co-Chairperson Dr. David Steinberg, Program Co-Chairperson Beverly Eisen, Community Relations Director We are encouraging Las Vegas community support of the Federation's Operation Exodus II Campaign to provide financial support for the resettlement of Soviet Jews in Israel as well as the United States. We work closely with the Jewish Family Service Agency to facilitate the acculturation of Soviet Jews to life in the Las Vegas area and deepen their Jewish identity while at the same time encouraging effective absorption in Israel, as much as possible. During the past year, we have had many opportunities to bring the issues of Operation Exodus to the forefront. We are working diligently to meet our commitment and do our share in this historic time in our lives. We have not stood by idly, while others do our work - a great thing is happening: FREEDOM FOR RUSSIAN JEWS!!! We are proud to report that for 1992 our Federation has raised to date for Operation Exodus II $329,406. The need is still great and any additional contributions would be greatly appreciated and used to secure freedom for our fellow Jews seeking their homeland. Earlier this year, the Las Vegas Jewish community mounted a campaign to provide humanitarian assistance to Jewish families in Russia. Chaired by Dmitri Shalin, nearly 60 food parcels were sent. Participants in the Food Bank Campaign were sent food package order forms with addresses written on them in Russian of needy families. Participants selected the value and content of the package they wished to send and Federation reimbursed them for half of their total cost. It is our hope that our humanitarian assistance ~ along with other community's ? will help the country to find its way to democracy and plant seeds of goodwill toward the United States for years to come. 4 WOMEN'S DIVISION REPORT Sandy Mallin, 1992 President Suzan Loeb, Women's Division Director Women's Division began Campaign 1992 during the summer with a series of Planning Conferences, assessing the needs of the community, establishing goals and objectives. The year began with our annual Board Retreat in September. With Gerda and Kurt Klein as our Scholars in Residence, Board Members visited the Los Angeles County Museum for a tour of the "Remember the Children - Daniel's Story" Exhibit from the National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C.. That day set the tone for our Campaign efforts. October saw us greeting over one hundred area newcomers to Las Vegas at a Shalom gathering chaired by Bonnie Berkowitz. We not only welcomed them, but apprised them of what Federation and our community have to offer. Along with General Board Members, Members of Women's Division implemented and participated in Federation's annual - and very successful - Golf Tournament at the end of the month. Together, we also attended a joint Solicitor Training Session in December to better prepare us for our fund-raising activities. In February we supported Super Sunday and the Major Gifts Gala; and for the first time, a special event was held for our Pomegranate Division, chaired by Geri Gilman. Our Main Event Luncheon at the Golden Nugget celebrated Women's Division's 18th Birthday, and honored our Past Presidents. UJA's National Women's Division President Bobbi Holland delivered the keynote address. Thanks to the co-chairwomanship of Leslie Simon and Karen Borgelt, it was one of our finest luncheons. March was made especially elegant by co-chairwomen Cari Marshall, Linda Cohen and Lil Kronberg and the Desert Inn Hotel with our Lion of Judah Dinner honoring our esteemed women of that division and welcoming Betsi Steinberg and Harriet Warm as new Lions. Debra Kaner and Sandi Fried presented the women of Las Vegas with a truly memorable Education Day Event. Through the generosity of Joyce Straus, an "Afternoon of Judaic Art" was presented at her home/studio/gallery, and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Our Campaign efforts are not over. To date, we remain slightly under our anticipated goal of $360,000. Aside from face-to-face solicitations, our Board Members conducted an annual phone-a-thon chaired by Lotty Polis at the offices of Fran Fine and a mail-a-thon was overseen by Campaign Vice President Marta Sorkin and President Sandy Mallin. Over 200 new women givers have been brought into our Federation this year alone. We are so proud that our ranks of concerned, committed women continue to grow. In preparation for planning for Campaign 1993, four of our women attended the Western Region Leadership Conference in San Jose, California, in April. New ideas and methods learned at this convention will be brought to our Planning Conferences during this summer. Women's Division's leadership is outstanding! The devotion of our women is tireless; they are always there in the forefront, helping to educate, helping to fund-raise, helping to support Federation in its myriad duties. Please take a minute to review the names on our Women's Division Board of Directors Roster and to salute them and their accomplishments, their goals and objectives, as we do, daily. 5 WOMEN'S DIVISION 1992 BOARD President Sandy Mallin First Vice President - Campaign Marta Sorkin Campaign Designate Geri Gilman Second Vice President Education Sandi Fried Third Vice President - Outreach Bonnie Berkowitz Secretary Sharon Sigesmund Treasurer Yvette Gilburae Publicity Arlene Blut Women's Division Director Suzan Loeb BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Karen Borgelt Amy Boruszak Linda Cohen Marilyn Etcoff Fran Fine Gerry Fischer Norma Fiedman Barbara Green Eva Kallick Debra Kaner Dyane Kohnen Lillian Kronberg Phyllis Lewis Cari Marshall Vivica Marshall Cindy Milmeister Dee Ober Irene Perer Esther Pokroy Lotty Polis Paula Quagliana Jane Schorr Phyllis Schwartz Elaine Silverman Leslie Simon Faye Steinberg Carole Turk Harriet Warm Liz Waters Jean Weinberger Wendy Wiener EX-OFFICIOS: Liz Ackerman Judy Frank Carolyn Goodman Melanie Greenberg Edythe Katz Marlyne Kirshbaum Lynn Rosencrantz Roberta Sabbath Reba Saiger CHAI MEMBERS: Jayn Marshall Esty Rousso Sara Saltzman HONORARIAN: Evelyn Bitker SUSTAINING: Dorothy Eisenberg Myra Greenspun Shirley Kravitz Elaine Steinberg NOMINATING COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF LAS VEGAS BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Nominating Committee* of the Jewish Federation has made the following recommendations for Officers and members of the Board:** Officers of the Board of Directors 6/10/92-6/10/93 President: Art Marshall 1st Vice President: Michael J. The proposes of the division are to foster a sense of common purpose and commitment to work for the betterment of Jews everywhere; to mobilize the Legal profession to serve as resources to the Jewish and general communities; to increase revenues through the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas to support Jewish life; and to serve as a means to identify and honor Legal professionals willing to make these commitments. Membership prerequisites are: 1) Participation in the Legal profession; 2) Commitment to the ideas of the Brandeis Society; and 3) a minimum annual contribution to the Federation of $500 to the General Campaign. BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL GROUP Doug Cohen, Chairman Beverly Eisen, Community Relations Director/Campaign Assistant The Business and Professional Group of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas holds luncheons with guest speakers throughout the year. These gatherings serve as an opportunity for concerned Jewish business people and professionals in our community to interact and become more informed about current events and issues of concern to each of us. COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMITTEE Michael A. Cherry, Chairman Beverly Eisen, Community Relations Director Jewish community relations activities are directed toward protecting and enhancing conditions conducive to the creative continuity and well-being of the Jewish community. Such conditions can be achieved only within a social framework committed to democratic pluralism; freedom of religion, thought, expression, and association; the wall of separation between church and state; equal rights, justice and opportunity; and, a climate in which differences among groups are accepted and respected, and in which each is free to cultivate its own distinctive values while participating fully in the general life of the society. History has bred in Jews the deep conviction that such conditions, which accord 11 with ethical and religious values derived from Judaism and Jewish traditions, afford Jews and all others the best opportunity to enjoy secure and meaningful lives. Through a broad, coordinated program of activity, the Community Relations Committee gives high priority to fostering American support for Israel; aiding endangered overseas Jewish communities; combatting anti-Semitism at home and abroad; protecting democratic constraints, particularly the Bill of Rights; and fostering a plural, democratic society in the United States. The Jewish community relations field is trying to convey to the Administration, political party leadership and members of the Senate that the Jewish community is deeply concerned about the erosions of the rights embodied in the religion clauses of the First Amendment, and will vigorously oppose, with coalition partners, any threats to further erosion. We will continue to monitor activities in the schools on a range of church-state issues. We will work with our local Clark County School District in developing, drafting, and adopting guidelines on holiday and other religious observances in the public schools, providing the school district with examples of guidelines. And, finally we will continue to oppose any legislation or proposed constitutional amendments that would allow school prayer in any form or other religious practices in the public schools. THE DR. HARRY L. GOLDBERG JEWISH LECTURE SERIES OF THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF LAS VEGAS Eileen Kollins, Chairperson Beverly Eisen, Community Relations Director The Dr. Harry L. Goldberg Jewish Lecture Series of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas has just concluded its 10th season, having presented four outstanding speakers to the community beginning this past January. Shalin, Professor of Sociology at UNLV, Dr. Ralph Nurnberger, Rabbi Benjamin Alon Kamin and finally, Rabbi Laura Geller, Executive Director of the American Jewish Congress, Pacific Southwest Region. We encourage each of you to continue your support of this worthy endeavor by both your financial contributions and your attendance during the 1993 season. We once again will be providing you with speakers, whose topics and approaches are varied and enlightening. 12 HOLOCAUST EDUCATION Edythe Katz, Chairperson Beverly Eisen, Connnunity Relations Director The Holocaust Education Committee of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas strives to teach the lessons of the Holocaust to the students of Clark County, as well as surrounding areas. The units used are a study of the Holocaust: its cause, implications, and impact on all humanity. The purpose of the Nevada Study on the Holocaust is to help students understand human nature and human behavior when confronted with the concept of good and evil. The units address the individual's responsibility to oneself and to society. The study was compiled by and produced by this committee in cooperation with the Nevada Humanities Committee and the Clark County School District. This year's Annual Yom Hashoah Community-wide Holocaust Memorial Service was held at Temple Beth Sholom and chaired by Rabbi Louis Lederman and Cantor Simon Bergman. The program was most emotional and meaningful to all in attendance. This event took place on April 30th. The guest speaker for the evening was Dr. David S. Wyman who emphasized the political atmoshpere in the United States and England at the time of the Holocaust and its factual impact on the events of World War II. More than 500 people participated in this year's service, including survivors, children of survivors and grand-children of survivors. Additional participants in this years' service included the following: The Most Reverend Daniel F. Walsh, Bishop of Reno-Las Vegas; Bishop Wendell Gray, L.D.S.; Reverend Phil Hausknecht, Lutheran Church; Reverend Peter Vaught, United Methodist Church; and Father Herbert A. Ward, Jr., S.S.C. 13 ISRAEL INDEPENDENCE DAY Neville Pokroy, M.D. and Cantor Simon Bergman, Co-Chairs Beverly Eisen, Community Relations Director Israel Independence Day was held Sunday, May 3rd in the Grand Ballroom of the Sands Hotel from 2-5 p.m. The afternoon of festivities for the entire family to enjoy was planned by the Council of Jewish Organizations (COJO) of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas in recognition of Israel's 44th birthday and the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem. Israeli and Jewish delicacies were sold. Businesses and organizations rented booth space to display and sell their products and informational materials. Artwork by our area youth was displayed. Musical entertainment was provided by the band, Pina Cohen, to which people danced and sang along. Approximately 1,000 participants took part in the day's activities. Among the dignitaries attending were Israel Consul General Tzuriel Raphel, Sen. Richard H. Bryan, Bill Marion representing Sen. Harry Reid, Renee Diamond representing Cong. The students participate in and are an integral part of the Jewish community at large in Las Vegas. JSU maintains a close working relationship with the Catholic and Protestant student groups at UNLV's University Center for Religion and Life (UCRL) as well as other ethnic groups on campus. During the past year, JSU has sponsored numerous activities for the students. They have had sports events and celebrations commemorating the various Jewish holidays and often observe Shabbat, by attending the various synagogues in the Las Vegas area. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Chairpersons: Gail Levitt and Rick Weinberger 1992 Advisory Committee: Mike Novick, Hal Schuster, Debbie Seideman, Goldie Steinberg, and Dar-ren Student Leadership Coordinator: Maria Gerecht Throughout the year, newcomers to Las Vegas and to Federation who have not yet experienced Leadership Development, are invited to participate in this vital program. Participants in the Leadership Program are generally 20 to 40 years of age. Leadership Development's three-fold objective is: to explore Jewish identity; to enhance awareness of contemporary Jewish issues, and to meet and interact with other young adults in the community. Over-all, the program's goal is to expose and connect the participants to the Las Vegas Jewish Community and to Federation. Participants are required to apply for membership and must meet a minimum $54 gift requirement to the Federation General Campaign. The program starts each year with a "Las Vegas Mini-Mission" to orient members with Las Vegas Jewish Community services. During the mission, participants visit as many of the Jewish sites in Las Vegas as is possible in a single day ~ learning of and seeing first hand the strength of our Jewish community and the wonderful programs and services being presented in response to our community's growth. 15 A delegation of 15 young leaders attended the United Jewish Appeal's Eighth Bi-Annual Young Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. this March. The delegates had the opportunity to meet with Nevada's representatives in the Senate and House of Representatives and convey to them their strong interest in Israel, loan guarantees and foreign aid. They also attended a variety of sessions which presented many view points of current issues, especially that of the State of Israel. Mike Novick and Hal Schuster led the Las Vegas delegation. Included in the program this year was a specialized weekend retreat in Southern California at the Brandeis Bardin Institute. Chaired by Rick Weinberger, participants immersed themselves in joyous, thought-provoking and memorable Jewish experiences. MAIMONIDES SOCIETY Harris J. Waters, M.D. - Chairman Beverly Eisen, Community Relations Director/Campaign Assistant The Health-Care Division is a recognized division of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, whose membership is growing as we continue with our programming for the year ahead.
