TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM Temple Beth Sholom THE BULLETIN February 2004 Shevat-Adar 5764 Vol. 4, No. 2 INSIDE THIS ISSUE MEN'S CLUB IS MADE OF MENCHEN Rabbi's Message 2 President's Message 3 Executive Director's Message 4 Alberto Mizrahi 5 Men's Club 6 Wranglers Hockey 7 Preschool News 8 Kamp KTon Ton 9 Donations 10 Preschool Enrollment 11 Gala 2004 12 Under the Dome 14 Women's League 15 Youth Happenings/ Happy Havurah 16 L'Dor V'Dor 17 Speaker/ Einstein Performance 18 Trial of Abraham 22 Calendar of Events 23 Schedule of Services 24 Temple Beth Sholom is a Conservative Congregation affiliated with The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism This past month has been an extraordinary month for Temple Beth Sholom's Men's Club and for TBS. It must be noted that, until a few years ago, there truly was no such thing as a TBS Men's Club. It was D-E-A-D. Then along came a few good men who determined that men had common interests in which their spouses generally didn't share; and that the women had an active Women's League through which they could pursue their interests. Why shouldn't the men have theirs? Traditionally, Men's Clubs have been about ball games, beer and bragging. But under the amazing leadership of Irwin Goldberg, the "Lazarus of TBS's Men's Clubs", the long dead organization has sprung back to life and become a major force in the life of TBS. This transformation is nothing short of a miracle for the men of TBS and for the Congregation as a whole. This month was very special. At the January Board meeting Irwin Goldberg, President o the Men's Club, presented a check to the Board on behalf of the Men's Club for $20,000 t be used for the reduction of the mortgage on the Temple. Elimination of our mortgagt means financial freedom for TBS, removal of a major source of pressure on the institu-tion's budget and undoubtedly, holding the line against increasing dues. The Men's Club gift recognizes the significance of this goal and has demonstrated, in a major way, its com-mitment to achieving financial independence for the shul. The dedication of stones in the Warsaw Ghetto Remembrance Garden (which the Men's Club paid for - may I remind you) made this possible. Purchasing additional stones will continue this mitzvah. Marlowe and Irwin New T B S V a n ~ at the Family Breakfast Thanks to the Men's Club Next it sponsored an incredibly successful Family Breakfast this past month. Close to 400 people came on a Sunday morning to partake of eggs, bagels, blintzes, and bakery goods (all supplied by Holey Moses). Children by the dozen got their faces painted, had balloons twisted into all kinds of shapes and received gifts on their way out. Kudos to Marlowe Mogill who organized this occasion for the Men's Club. It was a lively and fun family event that reflected the Club's love for all the Congregation. At a cost of $5 per family (irrespective of numbers) it was virtually FREE... FREE... FREE.... (Continued on Page 6) mma 2?Rabbi's Message The Hardening of Pharoh's Heart Rabbi Felipe Goodman There was a venerable old rabbi in an Eastern European town who, pressed by the many responsibilities of his position, needed someone to assist him in answering the many questions of religious practice that were brought to his attention. The congre-gation therefore designated the rabbi's son, a recognized scholar, to take on this task. The son, awed by the appointment, felt inadequate in comparison with his highly-learned father. One day, the young rabbi said to one of his friends, "If you vant to know the difference between my father and myself -- let me tell you. Recently two officers of the :ongregation asked me the following question: A Sefer Torah caught fire, but a few of the parchments were inaffected and they wanted to know what to do with the unburned portions. Not having had such a ques-ion before, I listened carefully and told them that I would look up the sources and have an answer ready for hem a day later. As they were about to leave, my father unexpectedly came into the room and I indicated o the officers that they should tell him their problem. When they told him that a Sefer Torah was destroyed >y fire, he fainted before he could even hear the question. That is the difference between my father and nyself," said the young rabbi. >iow, how did the two rabbis, both learned and pious, differ in their reaction to the burned Torah scroll? The -oung rabbi was dealing with a legalism, a question of law; the father could not be so detached; he was leart-stricken by the bad news. The young rabbi remained aloof; his father felt that his heart was being torn isunder, or, as the Yiddish expression goes, "Es hot bie im gerisn dos harts." "he story, I believe, helps us to understand the thrust of the opening statement of Parashat Bo. "Then God iaid to Moses, 'Go to Pharaoh. For I have hardened his heart and the heart of his courtiers...." What did his hardening of the heart mean? Insensitivity, aloofness. Just as the rabbi's son could face the burning of ?Torah scroll with cool detachment, so could Pharaoh witness the suffering and the cry of the Israelites, ind yet his heart showed no signs of compassion. He remained adamant in his refusal to let the Israelites save until forced to the wall by ten consecutive plagues. \ midrashic passage tackles the problem of how Pharaoh's heart could have been hardened by God, thus lepriving him of his free will to choose between good and evil. "There comes a stage where, if man still re-uses to listen to warning, then God locks his heart up from the possibility of repenting. This was the case vith Pharaoh. God warned him five times and he paid no attention." The rabbinic lesson was clear: a heart hat repeatedly fails to see suffering and react compassionately builds up a hard, rocky surface which nakes it immune to moral tremors. (Here some examples may be given. The Russian attitude toward Jew-sh emigration could serve as a fitting illustration of hearts which have hardened.) Contrary to Pharaoh's rocky heart, we Jews have spoken of a "Jewish heart," referring to all those qualities vhich should distinguish our people: mercy, kindness, compassion. In the words of the Talmud: Kol ham-irahem al habriot she-hu mizratan shel Avraham Avinu. Still, let us not take these Jewish qualities for granted. They must be nurtured and cultivated. The possibility )f human hearts becoming stony is always there. But the practice of mercy, sympathy and compassion will ilways lead us to become hartzige yidin - Jews with "a heart of flesh." (Eze. 11:19) President's Message?3 Bob By Jeff Zucker As many of you may already know, Bob Mirisch's term as Temple Executive Director will end this June. It is hard to believe that two years will have passed. Many of the things that Bob has accomplished during this period were subtle or behind the scenes so that not many people may be aware of them. One of the first of them showed up almost immediately. On Saturday mornings, when someone asks for a Mesheberach prayer to be said for someone who is sick, they are given a card to mail to the ailing person so that they know someone is thinking of them. Now we may take this for granted, but two years ago no one had ever thought of it. It may not seem like such a big deal, but I can assure you that, to the sick, knowing that someone cares is a very big deal in-deed. It may seem like years ago, but the Iraq war and resulting heightened security threat were less than a year ago. It is fortunate for Temple Beth Sholom that before the crisis Bob had already established good relations and lines of communication with the various governmental agencies involved in security. Those relationships and information allowed us, and, if necessary, will allow us in the future, to focus our secu-rity efforts where they will do the most good, as well as to get the maximum possible assistance in those efforts. Another area I would like to mention pertains to the long range future of our Temple. There is a natural tendency to focus only on day-to-day problems, but it is also necessary to step back and look at where we are going in the long term and find the best methods to get there. While I must admit that it has not been easy for Bob to get me to do so - some people think that the initial "P" of my middle name stands for procrastinator ? we are moving forward both with specific programs as well as general planning which will hopefully further assure our ability to continue all that we are now doing, and much more. Space does not let me continue, but as my last point, I would like to mention Bob's efforts on behalf of organ donation. Temple Beth Sholom has participated in the last two National Organ Donor Shabbats and hopefully, as a result of Bob's efforts, many of us who otherwise might not have done so are partici-pating in this important mitzvah. Over the past two years Bob has shown a passion and concern for this Temple. I look forward to Bob and Judy continuing as active members of this congregation for a long time to come. February 2004 4?Executive Director's Message/ Nomination notice TBS LEADERSHIP EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY Robert Mirisch It's all around us. On TV, in the press. On everybody's tongue. 2004 is a national election year, and it makes us aware that leadership is our responsibility. On this page you will find the By-Laws man-dated call for election of the TBS Board. Anyone can be considered by the Nominating Committee to fill a Board vacancy. All it takes is letting the Committee know you are interested and submitting a resume to them by February 20. While a slate of people will be nominated by the Nominating Com-mittee (as our By-Laws stipulate), an alternative method is also provided, one where you or some-one you trust to have the best interests of TBS at heart, can be proposed for a Board position. After the slate has been proposed, anyone not on it who still wants to run can petition to be included on the ballot. All that it takes is asking to be included, and having your petition endorsed by 10 TBS members in good standing. Then get people to come to the Annual Meeting and vote. Becoming active in the operation of the synagogue is the way to make it run the way you want it to. Inaction on your part means that you are willing to accept another's vision of your temple. Leadership doesn't strictly mean the Board. It means par-ticipation at all levels. Volunteering for work on Committees, be it Membership, Social Action, Bikur Cholim, Ritual or any of the other committees, is how a person gets involved and becomes knowledgeable about the shul. Talk doesn't make it happen. Work does. New ideas, different perspectives on old ideas, new energy is what you have to contribute to making TBS a stronger, even more vibrant, community of fellow Jews. Plenty of opportunities exist to become a more active member. Men's Club and Women's League are also ways of shaping the destiny of TBS. Both are vital and active auxiliaries that are creating the leaders of the future. Don't wait for someone to ask you. Leadership means taking the initiative. If you do need someone to ask you, consider this that invitation. Now is a good time to give some thought to this process. The recently completed Iowa Caucasus' provides a model for grass roots leadership. Sit with your fellow members and consider what leadership in TBS means and what it means to your families. Consider how you might make the temple be an institution that better meets your spiritual, educational, social needs. If you think you can make a difference, go for it. Now is the time. If you have any questions about the process, call Audrey Merkin, who, as Secretary of the Board, is established in the By-Laws as the Chair of the Nominating Committee. She can be reached at 341-8623 or through the Temple Office. Send resumes to the Nominating Committee to the Office or fax it to 804-1370. To paraphrase what we used to write in typing class: "Now is the time for all good Jews to come to the aid of the shul." Nominations Being Sought for Board of Directors A Nominating Committee has been appointed to nominate candidates for Directors, to be voted on at the general membership meeting this May. If any members wish to be considered to be nominated as a Di-rector, he or she must notify the Nominating Committee prior to February 20th. Members may contact the Nominating Committee by sending a letter to the Temple office or email to info@bethsholomlv.org to the attention of "Chair, Nominating Committee." To be nominated, a person must have been a member in good standing since July, unrelated to any appointed Director and not a member of the board of any other synagogue in Clark County. He or she will also have to give the Nominating Committee a short re-sume of their qualifications. The Nominating Committee will submit its nominees to the board in March. Individuals not nominated may seek nomination by petition, provided that their petition is signed by 10 members in good standing and is submitted within two weeks after notification that they were not among the individuals designated by the Nominating Committee. Mizrahi to sing for TBS?5 TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM BRINGS "JEWISH PAVAROTTI" TO LV Shirim Chayim Concert Series Features Tenor Alberto Mizrahi. Temple Beth Sholom is proud to present Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi, Tenor, and Cantor Daniel Friedman of Temple Beth Sholom, accompanied by pianist Tova Morcos-Kliger in concert. The performance, Mizrahi's first in Las Vegas, will take place Sunday March 28,2004 at 3:00 PM at the Orleans Showroom. Affectionately known as "The Jewish Pavarotti," Greek born tenor Alberto Mizrahi is recognized as one of the world's leading interpreters of Jewish music, and has thrilled audiences worldwide in recitals, symphony concerts and opera. He has sung with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Jerusalem Symphony and the Washington Choral Arts Society. Mizrahi was also featured in major concerts at New York's Avery Fisher and Carnegie Halls, London's Queen Elizabeth Hall and Heychal Hatarbut in Tel Aviv. Mizrahi is Hazzan of the historic Anshe Emet Synagogue, Chicago, serves on the faculty of the H.L. Miller Cantorial School in New York, is a member of the Executive Council of the Cantor's Assembly, on the Board of the Zamir Choral Foundation, and is the artistic director of Chicago's Spertus Institute concert series. Alberto Mizrahi, and our talented Cantor Daniel Friedman, will take the stage, accompanied by the gifted pianist Tova Morcos-Kliger in the first concert in the Shirim Chayim (Songs of Life) concert series. Tickets range from $100 to $18, and are available by calling (702) 804-1333, ext 127. The Orleans Showroom is located at 4500 W. Tropicana Avenue. Our last van, gained through the generosity of Bob Fischer and Ethan Allen, alas puffed its final exhaust some months ago. TBS needed a workhorse vehicle for the many daily chores our Maintenance staff takes care of. It has been a struggle without having one. Thanks must go to the people at Bill Heard Chevrolet for all they did in making this possible. They are truly friends of TBS. The "old gray mare" will be donated to the Jewish Family Services Agency for it to sell, as part of its car recovery program. A word about Irwin. Our rules concerning who is eligible to be a Hero of Volunteerism preclude naming him, because he is a member of the Temple's Board. But Irwin had the heart and the soul to see the need for the Men's Club and to organize his friends (and everyone is his friend) to make it a reality. When asked if TBS could clone his heart and give the clones to every-body, in his usual humble way, he said he doubted at his age it would be much use to anyone. Wrong, Irwin, there does not beat a healthier heart than yours. It is filled with love and compassion and dedication. The Men's Club is made of Menchen. Every man who is a member of the Club may be justifiably proud of its place at TBS. Every man who is a member of TBS and not a member of the Men's Club, should show his support for this vital and vibrant group. There is no reason that, for a mere $36, every man doesn't join the group. Let's see a sea of Red Yarmulkas by the next Men's Club Shabbat (March 20). Join and get the Yarmulka for FREE... FREE ... FREE. Women's League will be covered in a future issue. TBS MEN'S CLUB FEBRUARY SCHEDULE SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1 - World Wide Wrap - No, this isn't something to eat!! February 2004 8- Preschool News The children at the Early Childhood Center are busy learning, growing, and having fun. The new year brings new beginnings and more fun in store for all. We are looking forward to our Tu B'Shevat ac-tivities such as the study of plants, harvest, and a special Shabbat seder filled with harvest figs, prunes, and seeds. We are also collecting Tzedakah and donations from our families for trees in Israel to re-member the Maini family. Michele Maini was a preschooler at our center for several years. Our Kindergarteners enjoyed their field trip to Aesop's Fables and had many opportunities to share their stories about what they learned. Their Pre-K buddies are anxious to hear all about their trip. They are getting busy preparing for Kindergarten. Our 2 and 3 year olds are working towards their social and academic goals for the year. We are studying letters, their sounds, and beginning writing skills. The children are enjoying all of the center based activities that we have here at TBS. We are planning our enrollment for the 2004-2005 school year. February will be an important time to consider programming at the Early Childhood Center. We are currently touring families to show the classrooms and meet the teachers in the preschool. Come by the preschool or call us at 804-1333 to schedule a tour, and see why TBS is setting the standard for excellence. We believe that Children who learn as Jews....Live as Jews.
