K o l A r i E l The Lion's Voice The Monthly Chronicle of Adat Ari El A Reform Congregation Embracing Traditional Judaism February 2000 25 Shevat - 23 Adar-1 Vol. IX ? Issue No. 2 KOL HARAV...The Rabbi's Voice Aryeh Moshe Joins AAE Aryeh "Ary" Moshe Golbart is now the newest (and youngest) member of Adat Ari El. Born on January 16, 2000, 9 Shevat, 6760, he is the youngest Golbart in the wortd. Along with Courtney, Gordon and Shira, he has helped round out our family of two girls and two boys. According to my son, Gordon, he had it figured out when we first found out that we were expecting. Gordon said the baby would have to be a boy so that our family would be even with three girts and three boys (he was counting his mom and dad). Rabbi Gary M. Golbart President Steven Janovitch 1st Vice President Dr. PhilHp Devore 2nd Vice President Bob Steelman Recording Secretary Jeanne Schomaker Corresp. Secretary Scott Schreiber Treasurer Michelle Blank Immediate Past President Dr. Lawrence Copelartd (702) 221-1230 FAX (702) 221-1386 Event Hot Line ? 390-8142 E-Mail - info@adatariel.com wwwjidatariel.com 3310 S. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas 89146 The birth of Ary was truly a community effort When Leslie was in her first three months of pregnancy, she was assigned by her doctor to bed rest The baby was due on February 14, but G-d had a different plan. Two weeks before Ary was born, complications forced Leslie into the hospital for the duration of her pregnancy. Then further complications required an emergency Caesarian Section one month and a day before the due date. It was nearly one more week before mom and baby were to leave the hospital. My regular duties as Rabbi seemed to only increase during those three weeks. I found myself pulling double duty as Dad and Mom with the house chores and children duties. That's where our incredible community came to the rescue. From those stressful three weeks, and continuing on even today, our friends have gone the extra mile to make our lives easier and richer. During the time Leslie and the baby were in the hospital, and through the beautiful ceremony of the Brit Milah (Bris), we were Messed with an outpouring of love and support I would like to thank just some of the wonderful people for whom Leslie and I owe many thanks. Two of Adat Ari El's distinguished members were responsible for the successful birth of our baby. Dr. David Snipper served as Leslie's doctor who handled the anesthesia. Dr. Patricia Pierce- Attman, whose specialty is high risk pregnancies, took superior care of my wife throughout the pregnancy and, as she had delivered our daughter Shira, delivered our new baby for us. Recently my mother read an article in our local Jewish paper that made her angry, to put it mildly. The article stated that there are now over 80,000 Jews in the Las Vegas Valley and, yet, less than 6,000 are affiliated with any local congregation. This revelation made my mother's blood boil. Think about it Perhaps 2-3 percent of all the people who identify themselves as Jewish are actively involved in Jewish life as members of a synagogue. Only days later my mother and I were eating at a local restaurant and my mother started a conversation with the owner's 17 year old son about the Chai he was wearing. The teenager, who works as a busboy for his father after school, was telling my mother about all the activities he is involved in when my mother asked, "So, tell me, what temple do you belong to?" Now, I thought that was a pretty forward question for my mother to have asked and I'm sure that I personally would not have asked it. (However, according to my mother, at her age you can ask almost anything and get away with it "What is he going to say to an old lady?") The boy said, "Well, we belonged to a congregation back in Michigan, but we havent joined one here." He tokf her that his grandparents belonged to a synagogue, but he couldnt remember which one. He then went on to complain that he only dated non- Jewish girls as he couldnt seem to find any Jewish girls in town. My mother said, "Well, you know, if more families joined temples, more Jewish boys would be able to find more Jewish girts." She then went on to give a plug to Adat Ari El and told him to call the Jewish Community Center while he was at H. This conversation did make me think, though, about all the Jews I know who complain about our youth marrying out of the faith, never to return and about the fundamental problem inherent in the indifference of most Jewish families. That is, if you do not introduce your child to Judaism and get that child hooked early, as an adult he or she will simply look elsewhere. And if you dont give your child an opportunity to meet Jews who are potential marital partners, that child will have nowhere else to look but ouside the faith. Something we should all ponder over our next cup of coffee... Until next month, I remain. Shoshi and Moishe Oberman also helped to provide food for each Shabbat. We want to thank Rivka and Zerig Nahari for a Shabbat meal. Thanks also go to Dirva Harlig and members of Neshei who sent Shabbat dinner to our home and to Leslie in the hospital. Rabbi Yisrael Shanowitz delivered the food to Leslie and came filled with good blessings for Shabbas. Our thanks go to Linda Sklar who "Schlepped" my children to dance class and to Shari Pitterman, Coco Lobel, Jennifer and Dr. Mark Ohriner for "Schlepping" and baby sitting and doing so many helpful deeds. Thanks, also, to Michelle Blank and the Adat Ari El Sisterhood, Lydia and Rick Zeller, Vardit and Dr. Peter Gesund, Lois and Rabbi Simon Bergman, Audry and Rabbi Craig Rosenstein, Jennifer and Dr. Jack Laurie, Marilee Spatz, Chip Moss, Rabbi Joseph Gelberman, Rabbi Yitchak Wyne, Sterni Shanowitz, Anita and Rabbi Louis Lederman, Steven and Linda Janovitch, my Secretary, Helen Groner, the children of the kindergarten and first grade at JCDS, Doreen Sally, Terry Ritter, Margaret and Jeff Jolcover, who all helped in special ways to make our life so enriched by their love and support Thanks go to all the children and their parents who came to our home for the Kriat Shema ceremony and to all who came to the Brit Milah celebration to share in our Simchah. Leslie and I have been so blessed with such wonderful friends and thank G-d for our little family. The Adat Ari El Youth Choir will meet at noon on Sundays at noon. The students will be rehearsing for performances during Purim and throughout the year. We encourage all of our students to participate for a fun and fulfilling experience. We would also like to invite children from first grade through the eighth grade whose families are unaffiliated to join our choir. Join us as our Religious School's Da let Class will be participating In a Family Shabbat Service on February 18. The families of the students will sponsor the Oneg Shabbat and the children will participate in the service. Come Schepp Nachas and watch our youngsters celebrate their Jewish heritage. Shalom, Rabbi Gary M. Golbart Bonni Spivak (Kol Harav...The Rabbi's Voice Continued From Page 1) Thanks go to Dr. Lee Bernstein, who not only served as the Mohel, but also cooked many meals for our family during the hospital stay and was reported up the night before the Bris until 4:00 AM cooking fish for the celebration. Dr. Bernstein's wife, Charlotte, daughter, Meianie, and Shari Pitterman did a one-time catering job par-excellence for the Bris for a crowd of over 200 people at our synagogue. The Adat Ari El Board of Directors and our congregation helped support my family during this difficult time and then helped financially in our celebration. Shelly and Dr. Jerome Kutliroff cooked and brought food to the hospital and Richard Aaronou sent over Kosher deli food daily to Leslie. TO THE PARENTS OF RELIGIOUS SCHOOL CHILDREN: The Tu B'Shevat Seder was wonderful and not possible without the help of the parents. They set up everything and did the serving. With much thanks and gratitude from all the Religious School Teachers: Vardit Gesund Rabbi Gary Golbart IrvKatz Diane Ng Nicole Klem-Richter Jann Reizner Michelle Sorom Keren Gesund (Teacher's Assistant) Shkxnit and Rabbi Yaakov Wasser cooked Shabbat dinners so our we could celebrate Shabbat in our home in a traditional style. KATZ 31 years experience (702)361-9800 KoJ Art El The Lion's Voice Page 4 To our Congregational Family, Moving to a new city and leaving family and friends behind can be difficult It has been six years since we moved to Las Vegas and, overall, it has been a good experience. Still, when it came time to plan a big event like our daughter Samantha's recent Bat Mitzvah, we thought we might miss the help we might have received if we had been living in our hometown. But fortunately for us, we didn't, because of the generous support from our Congregational Family at Adat Ari El. Many of you have gone out of your way to help us feel that we are a part of the family here. Whether it was helping us to coordinate food and decorations for the Oneg Shabbat, or making sure our humble Sanctuary would comfortably accommodate all of our out-of-town guests, you all helped make this slmcha truly memorable. Perhaps most important, were the words of encouragement many of you offered to Samantha as she prepared for this special day. From the first time we entered its doors, we knew that there was something special about Adat Ari El. We may not have a building of our own, nor may we be operating like a well-run business, but there is something at the heart of this place that can and will fill your spirit with joy, if you let it It was a long journey for us, finding a Temple where we felt comfortable, but the results were worth the effort We look forward to celebrating Sarah's Bat Mitzvah with you all, a little over four years from now. Love, Bob, Sheri, Samantha and Sarah Steelman B'NAI MITZVAH CLASS A B'nai Mitzvah class for men and women who have not had a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Ceremony is beginning in conjunction with our Hebrew courses and "Guide to Judaism" course.
