I hope that you will remember these thoughts from these few years In our family's history, and share them with Elizabeth and Sandro and any other babies that may come our way, especially your own children and grandchildren. When Amma and I were first married your Poppa had j u s t finished being President of his synagogue. I remember one morning, probably after a meeting, he seemed annoyed, and Amma said to him, "Why do you do t h i s ? " "For the grandchildren," he told her. We did not understand what he meant, but we do now. Did you know that a long time ago your Crumps was also President of his synagogue and do you remember that at the end of almost every dinner conversation at our house, he would look around the table, smile and say, "Things haven't changed much in 50 years!" Being President of a synagogue is a very important job. It takes a lot of time and you need a lot of help. It is good that Amma is my partner. You meet a lot of people and if you are lucky you get to know them very well. Sometimes you agree and sometimes you disagree, but always you work together for the greater good. That means, no matter what your personal opinion Is, you try to meet the needs of everyone who goes to the temple. And you try to do that w i t h i n the rules that make us a Conservative synagogue. The President is the President because at a particular time in the synagogue's history the congregation thinks that person is the best for the j o b . A President is not more important than anyone else. The President is not the richest person in the synagogue. The President doesn't know all the answers. It is an honor to be President because people put their trust in you. Trust is the most important honor that someone can give you. It is very special to have someone's trust and you worry everyday that you will disappoint someone. It is ok to worry, because that j u s t makes you t r y your hardest to do a good job. I liked being President of Midbar Kodesh Temple. I liked having you sit with me by the door to welcome the congregation on Shabbat. I liked watching you walk with the Torah at High Holy Days, or help to dress the Torah, standing on your tiptoes to put the Yad in place. I l i ke hearing Elizabeth yell out my name when she runs down the hall and she sees my picture on the wall. I r e a l l y like that you have a special mitzvah project. Things won't be too different for us when I am not the President of our synagogue. We will still go to temple together and we can s t i l l sit by the door and I w i l l s t i l l be proud when I see you take an honor. The things I want you to remember about Midbar Kodesh Temple is not j u s t the two , see "Bampa" on page 9 I ? > ?! HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR CHILD'S JEWISH EDUCATION TO YOU? R E L I G I O U S S C H O O L D I R E C T O R Mira Slobody f - H o C Q C O Z D o o ? c HY DO WE SEND OUR CHILDREN TO HEBREW SCHOOL? THERE ARE MANY POSSIBLE ANSWERS TO THIS QUESTION. MANY PARENTS WANT TO TEACH THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT OUR JEWISH TRADITION. MOST PARENTS' LONG TERM GOAL IS BAR/BAT MITZVAH. FOR SOME FAMILIES THE IMPORTANT FACTOR IS BELONGING TO A COMMUNITY. AT TIMES I FEEL THAT OUR STUDENTS' ULTIMATE SUCCESS OF THEIR JEWISH EDUCATION FALLS SHORT. HEBREW SCHOOL BECOMES A MATTER OF CONVENIENCE. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES TAKE PRIORITY AND SOME OF OUR STUDENTS FALL BEHIND THE REST OF THE CLASS. ASK YOURSELF, HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR CHILD'S JEWISH EDUCATION TO YOU? WHAT WILL HAPPEN MANY YEARS FROM NOW WHEN YOUR CHILDREN ARE ADULTS? WILL JEWISH EDUCATION BE IMPORTANT TO THEM AND THEIR CHILDREN? OR WILL IT TAKE A BACK SEAT TO OTHER ACTIVITIES? WE ALL NEED TO MAKE AN EFFORT TOGETHER TO ENSURE THAT OUR CHILDREN ATTEND HEBREW SCHOOL AND RECEIVE ALL THAT OUR TEACHERS see "Mira" on page 6 , ? ? Midbar Kodesh Temple in conjuction with Yeladim academy is now providing early childhood programming for children ages 2 through pre-K. The early childhood group, called 'Nitzanim' will offer several different programs throughout the year, to include a Saturday morning Shabbat Gan and special holiday events. Shabbat Gan is offered on the second and fourth Saturday of each month at 1 0 : 3 0 a.m. Holiday programs will be offered once a month on Sunday mornings and will introduce children to Jewish holidays, traditions, crafts and foods. All events will be held at Midbar Kodesh. Shabbat Gan is offered free of charge. The holiday programs will run December 2001 through May 2002. Participants are encouraged to pre-register for the complete set and will be asked to pay a small fee. The first holiday program will be held December 2nd.
