Bet Knesset Bamidbar Volume IX Issue 7 NEWSLETTER Sivan - Tammuz 5760 July 2000 FROM RABBI'S DESK HERSHEL BROOKS On July 4th we celebrate the holiday of independence and freedom. Yet one must realize that independence and freedom does not mean to be free and careless from moral and ethical responsibilities. The story is told of the drunk who staggered along the street. He swung his arms with careless abandon until his fist made heavy contact with the face of a passerby. "What goes on here?" cried the stunned victim. "This is a free country. I have a right to swing my arms," our inebriated friend protested. "Yes," agreed the assaulted pedestrian, "but your rights end where my nose begins." The offender was probably in no condition to absorb that lesson in the true meaning of freedom, but we who enjoy the blessings of liberty cannot afford to disregard the inescapable truth that freedom has its limits. If liberty is not to degenerate into license, there must be restraints. We have to know where the other fellow's nose begins. The ancient Israelites heard this message quite soon after they gained their freedom. After centuries of enslavement in Egypt, they were finally liberated from backbreaking and soul-suffocating bondage. Free at last! Now they could do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. If this was what they thought, they were soon disabused of this illusion. They were gone from Egypt only a few weeks when they found themselves at the foot of a quaking Mount Sinai and heard the majestic voice out of the heights proclaiming a host of restraints on their freedom: Thou shalt do this! Thou shalt not do thatl Dol Dontl That was freedom? But of course! That was and is exactly what freedom involves. Before we can do all the things that freedom entitles us to do, we must understand what freedom does not entitle us to do: We are not free to deceive or malign; we are not free to steal or murder; we are not free to discard moral values or encroach upon our neighbor's freedom. This is not a popular doctrine. We dont like limits on our freedom. We resent repressions and restraints. This is especially true in a time of open rebellion against traditional standards of morality and decency, when "doing your own thing" is a dominant creed. But, like it or not, a life uncontrolled is a life that will be denied meaningful achievement. A wise teacher reminds us: "No horse ever gets anywhere until it is, harnessed. No steam or gas ever drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunneled. No life ever grows great until it is dedicated, focused, disciplined." The middle stanza of "America the Beautiful" says it best: America! Americal God mend thine every flaw. Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law! PRESIDENT SHEL KOLNER Shalom! I recently came across an article that was an interview with God. I am sure that many of you would like to conduct the interview, but the author of this interview is unknown to me. But from what I read, God was very gracious, open and honest and invited the interviewer back anytime. One of the questions the interviewer asked: "As a parent, what are some of life's lessons you want your children to learn?" There were many replies, but there were a couple of responses I would like to repeat here. "To learn that they cannot make anyone love them. What they can do is to let themselves be loved." "To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in their lives, but who they have in their lives." These two responses apply to Temple life as well as our regular lives. Last month I left you with a list of the fine people who contribute to the success of our Shabbat Services. This month I would like to acknowledge those who contribute behind the scenes to keep Temple Bet Knesset Bamidbar running smoothly. As these people do their work, it makes your Temple life and my Temple job easier. These are a part of the "who" God is referring to. This monthly Newsletter takes many hours of diligent efforts by the following members of the Temple: Alma Brooks, Arlene R. Goodman, Sarah Greene, Gloria Meyers, Sharlene Tolman, Ruth Weinrott, Hershel Weinrott and Betty Wettman. Thanks to all of you for the continuous monthly effort and to those who write the monthly articles that appear - Rabbi Brooks, Betty Pardo, Lou Klionsky, Faye Arshawsky and Lou Pokat This is a major undertaking each month and is greatly appreciated. Speaking of Sarah Greene, she is our VP of Membership and is continually updating all membership information. Working with her on the Yahrzeit notification and record keeping are Bobby Coronel and Rose Wotfer. Our Treasurer, Steve Tolman is keeping a fine set of books and is administering this function very well. We know at all times the current status of our accounts. Our Executive VP., Rhoda Schwartz has pinch-hit forme a couple of times now and has done a great job. The Secretary, Jean Modes and VP., Religion, Lou Klionsky are always there when needed. Thanks to all these executives for their fine work and support. There are a few others who do work that is transparent to the Temple Membership. Max Ross is responsible for all the Temple properties; Ted Friedman handles books and Norm Segal handles High Holiday books. These tasks are also greatly appreciated. Tributes is a major task that is very important to all of us. We recently had a change in the Chair of this task. Lynne Willens is taking this over from Ruth Golden. Thank you very much to Ruth for her fine work and to Lynne for taking this on. There is one Men's Club and one Sisterhood function that need to be acknowledged. The Minyon Chairman, Art Mandel and the Condolence Meal Co-chair, Freda Greenfield and Mimi Singer. These three people do excellent work at very sensitive times and are outstanding at what they do. Now comes the time where I must acknowledge that I may have missed someone. Please do not get upset. Please let me know so I can acknowledge you in the future. There are always opportunities for others to get involved, so please let us know if you would like to do so. Shalom! Please call Josh Lipow at 243-0399. 4 ABOUT RITUAL LOUIS KLIONSKY, VP Ritual The "cause" in Jewish Life Countless groups all over the world will surrender their lives for different causes. The Iranians will die, the Afghanistanis, the North Koreans, the Kurds...the list is endless. So what's so special about the Jewish people? Throughout the ages, the destiny and mission of the Jewish nation has been to teach monotheism. Jews are dying not for their own sake, but for the sake of humanity. By transmitting the message of monotheism and love your neighbor, we continue to be a light unto the nations and thereby preserve the hope of world peace. This concept was such a clear reality that it gave Jews a higher form of pleasure than anything material did on earth. Rabbi Akiva understood this, when asked to trade his life for God. He understood the idea so clearly that he could even experience joy. He knew that he was connecting with something more precious than his own life. Despite the horrible persecutions, Jews always treasured life because we understood our power to transform the world. Yet when faced with conversion or death, we knew we had to fight, or die for the sake of keeping the Jewish message alive. Without that obstinacy and unwavering adherence to our faith, the Jewish people could never have made such an enormous impact on the ideas and values of world civilization. Because our great-grandparents understood this, we are here as Jews today. That's why we teach our children to say the Shema; "Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One". If you want to live, be real. Know what you are willing to die for. Then you are genuinely alive and are able to truly achieve the highest form of pleasure from living. Shakespeare said, "A coward dies many deaths, a brave man dies but once." All of us are going to die. The question is, do you want to live? We had a nice warm day for our annual picnic at desert vista picnic area. The food was great! Why does food eaten out in the fresh air always taste so good? I have been so busy preparing for my Bat Mitzvah, and my unexpected trip to San Francisco to care for my son who had emergency knee surgery that I have been unable to interview anyone for our "profile of officers". So, I decided to pick someone who I know all about and guess what, it is mel I was born in Los Angeles, California. Yes, one of the few and rare- a real native Californian. In fact, my 3 children and late husband are all natives. I have 2 boys and 1 girl, 2 grandchildren, a boy and a girl and a great granddaughter. Also, there is a new grandchild due in January 2001. As anyone who knows me, knows: I love to shop, shop and shopl I also love video poker, Maj Jong and I have just learned to play Pan. I like to take drives, see the shows and entertainment in Las Vegas, travel and I like to see nature. The mountains are so beautiful here. I love the ever-changing beauty of the desert. I also garden, growing roses as well as orchids. I I came to Las Vegas two years ago and am enjoying my newfound friends and my retirement life. We will take a couple months off for the summer. So, no meetings. Remember, call someone and get together with them. This is what the "singles" is all about. 7 THE ALL - AMERICAN HISTORY QUIZ 1. How many Jews came to America on the Mayflower? 2.
