A H A V A T ' S N U ? A Monthly Publication of Ahavat Torah Synagogue Issue #17, April 2000/5760 (702) 242-2111; Fax: (702) 242-3979 P.O. Box 370373, Las Vegas, NV 89137 Craigaudrev@worldnet.att.net SEARCH ME! From the Desk of: Rabbi Craig Rosenstein, J.D. The silence is eerie...The darkness of the house broken only by the light flickering of the walls in each room...the shadows are very large and dwarf the people as they walk from room to room searching... searching for the chametz, the unleavened products in our house, and searching for the evil and slavery in our lives. While we celebrate Pesach as the "Festival of freedom," we are really cele-brating our slavery. "How so?" you ask. By searching for chametz, we are seeking to cleanse ourselves from all products that ob-scure our true selves from God. In our flaase selves, we are filled with pride, we are "puffed-up" (like the leavening absent) with all manner of self-importance. When we are prideful, we have a desire to answer to nobody but ourselves. We are slaves. When we cleanse our homes of chametz, we admit to being slaves to the One that is greater than all of us. However, this kind Of slavery is liberating, because now we admit to searching for evil the only place that it can reside, in ourselves, and in the lives of those to whom we have responsibility for. By searching for chametz, we state that while man "does not live by bread alone; but upon all that goes forth from the mouth of the Lord," man must eat and thus will be quite happy to settle for the more modest fare of matzos. Our eating of modest foods signifies that we desire to be tied to the yoke of mitzvoth, right-eous actions, of God's com-mandments, rather than being tied to the human yokes of Pharaohs and false messiahs, human rulers and leaders who will entice us with the wealth and splendor of materiality, while they cul-tivate our souls and enslave our propensity to grow and prosper. Omayn! FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT J a c k K a u f m a n OUR MOST IMPORTANT ASSET Last Friday night, March 24, attendance was at a very low level. As we looked around the room, we realized that many of the regulars were absent. In taking note of those that we knew were out of town or unavailable for "legitimate" reasons, we came to the realization that many of you were out for medical reasons. There were 2 people in the hospital, 2 more that were suffering other injuries, and a small number of people just not up to par who elected to stay home, (continued on page 3) CALENDAR OF EVENTS First Friday of Every Monlh a Family Service from 6:00?6:30 pm. Our synagogue is not a business with "walk-in" traffic, non do we ofFen early bras or rwo-fers +o c t - tncct people. The strengrh and support- of A T S is in its weekly attendance from those that come for the shatom, the sanc-tity, the support and the friendship derived from the Shaobat services. When illness becomes the reason for lack of attendance ana other potential situations, it quickly puts the meaning of life and health into prospective. Nothing be-comes as important!! When Rabbi reads the mishabera list, it seems t o grow end adds t o the realization that our people are our most important csset. We pnay for -Hiose not enjoying the bes~ of health, cnc for those that are in good health t o stoy t n c t way. Good health is ore of those intangibles that, until you don't have it, you don't know how im-portant it really is. B'Shaiom- Jack Kaufman ir (Left to right) Jay Kenig, Sara Bard.
