Jewish Family Service Agency 1555 E. Flamingo Road, Suite 125 ? Las Vegas, Nevada 89109 ? (702) 732-0304 Java, Sinkers, Big Band Are USO Night Features A star-spangled boogie-woogie evening was sponsored by Jewish Family Service Agency on Saturday, Nov. 12, 1988, in the Grand Ballroom of the Gold Coast Hotel. USO Night, a salute to Veteran's Day, was a tribute to the men and women - and the music and memora-bilia - of long-ago eras. (For those whose memories stop short of World War II, "Java" and "sinkers" were common terms for coffee and donuts. And there wasn't a USO canteen in the world that didn't serve these epicurean delights to the service men and women.) "We hope to make USO Night an annual event," says Barry Eisen, president of JFSA "We need to continue our fundraising efforts to support the vital services the Agency provides to Southern Nevada." Eisen added, "It was a great surge of community spirit that made the event happen. That's how Americans have always pulled together when a big job had to be done." (A usually reliable source informs us that Eisen, having been in diapers during World Way II, probably was an excellent history student.) General Chairman of USO Night was Maurey Pastor. Marilyn Mehr and Dr. Marilyn Lehrner were in charge of decor and party arrange-ments. Isabel Goldberg and Beverly Eisen headed the program commit-tee. Gail Alcalay handled ticked dis-tribution; Barbara Kirsh chaired ad-vertising sales and door-prize draw-ings. John Tullis, a professional party planner, coordinated the entertain-ment and accessories; Ben Zimmer-man was the official photographer. Harvey Eisner served as treasurer for the event; Arlene Peikoff Blut headed the publicity committee and co-produced this newspaper with Sari Aizley. USO Night began with cocktails at 6:30 (1830 hours for the military-minded). Dinner was served at 7:30 p.m. Lenny LaVett's 15-piece orches-tra provided the big-band sounds for dancing until 11:30 p.m. The Honorary Dinner Committee included the following: Joanie and Rabbi Sanford Akselrad, Hortense & San Alper, District Attorney Rex Bell, Lois & Cantor Simon Bergman, Shelley & Fred Berkley, Judge Seymour Brown, Rachel & Michael Cherry, Beverly Eisen, and Dorothy & Paul Eisenberg. Also, Mark Fine, Melanie & Gene Greenberg, Kenny C. Guinn, Micki & Rabbi Mel Hecht, Rebecca & Barry Horowitz, Edythe Katz, Irene & Herb Kaufman. Sheila & Norman Kaufman, Anita & Rabbi Louis Lederman, Bev & Mayor Ron Lurie, Joyce & Jerome D. Mack, Sandy & Stan Mallin, Jayne & Art Marshal, and Robert C. Maxson. Sandy & Lt. Gov. Bob Miller, Gov. Mike O'Callaghan, Lynne & Arne Rosencrantz, Linda & Ken Schnitzer, Harry Wald, Arthur Waltzman, Liz & Dr. Harris Waters, Jean & William S. Weinberger, Mickey & Leo Wilner. November 12, 1988 - The Cries of "Let's Do It Again Next Year" Rang Throughout Las Vegas. November 4, 1989 - we did it again! The Second Annual Jewish Family Service Agency's USO Night, honoring Las Vegas veterans, took place on this Saturday night at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Casino on the Strip. Cocktails, good food, and the big-band sounds of the Lenny LaVett Orchestra filled the ballroom, as hundreds of JFSA supporters mixed and mingled, while at the same time supporting all of JFSA's programs. General Chairman of the USO Night was Marilyn Mehr. The star-spangled decorations were created by Jon Tullis of "By Special Arrange-ment" and JFSA's own Rona Mendel-sohn. Ben Zimmerman and Levone Eaton of Studio Southwest were the evening's official photographers, white Sari Aizley, Lois Doctors, Marty Loeb, Bobbi Newman and Phyllis Lewis "pasted things up" as editors and production crew of this edition of "Stars and Stripes." Door prizes were made possible by hundreds of phone calls by Bar-bara Kirsh, while Ron Kirsh made sure things ran smoothly as Master of Ceremonies. The eye-catching invitations were the creation of Karen and Eli Schwartz, Roz Sbarra, and Marilyn Lehrner. Our special thanks go out to our Honorary Dinner Committee, headed by Governor and Mrs. Bob Miller, as well as the entire JFSA family, headed by Executive Director Bill Feldman and President Bernie Kaufman. Plans are underway for 1990's "USO Night." Think Ahead!
