Somewhere into the far unknown, There, where no one kills another. Maybe more of us, a thousand strong Will reach this goal Before too long. Alena never attained this goal. More than one million children just like her were also murdered at the hands of the Nazis. This special moment pays tribute to a woman who had taught both adults and children here in the State of Nevada that which Alena longed to find ? "a place somewhere in the unknown," "where there are other nicer people." We all are aware of Edythe Katz's devotion and commitment in the effort to teach others about the Holocaust. She wants us to learn from the experience of others man's inhumanity to his fellow human being. If we remember the atrocities committed against the children and against the adults, numbering six million Jews and four million others, then perhaps we can learn to be the kind of people that Alena knew existed. It is Edythe's leadership that is helping to mold our state into the land of vision that Alena dreamed of. This moment is also shared posthumously with Edythe's late husband, Lloyd, of blessed memory. Often, Edythe reminds us of his important role in her life. Through his own unique ways, Lloyd was able to bring Edythe to an understanding of her Jewish self. In turn, it was that inner learning experience which Edythe has passed on to so many of us here in Las Vegas. Edythe has fulfilled her obligation to teach us the lessons of Torah, through action and word. It is now our opportunity to seize upon the lessons she has taught us, and make them happen here in Las Vegas. We are grateful to be taught by both our mentor and our friend, and for that we, Temple Beth Sholom and the people of Las Vegas, pay her honor. I want to thank Edythe as well, for her humanitarian and educational contributions to the people of Nevada. Edythe's contributions to Holocaust Studies have made Holocaust Education a priority in our schools. Temple Beth Sholom has been the center of Jewish life in Las Vegas for nearly fifty years. Dedicated to family, education, and tradition, it has helped to establish roots in a rapidly growing community. The challenges facing Synagogues and the Jewish Community today are numerous. Temple Beth Sholom is as committed today as it was forty-seven years ago, to continue the leadership role it has taken in the Las Vegas community. With individuals such as Edythe on our team, we are certainly headed for success. May we all continue to grow "from strength to strength"...Chayil L'Chayil.
