I agree with you that we should stand by our democratic allies who have clearly indicated their willingness to defend themselves. As you know, this has long been U.S. policy in the Middle East. The letter I signed to the President together with seventy-five of my colleagues had little if anything that is new in it. Since 1947, numerous Presidents and Secretaries of State have made it clear that it is American policy to support the maintenance of the state of Israel within secure and defensible boundaries. The purpose of this letter was to put the Senate on record indicating that it is still American policy. Thank you for taking the time to write and please feel free to contact me again.
