TO: BOARD OF TRUSTEES DATE: NOVEMBER 25, 1980 FROM: ERNEST W. LIBMAN RE: PROGRESS REPORT Home Care Program The Home Care program is very active. We have been involved with thirty-five cancer patients and their families. The Bereavement component of the program has an active group of a dozen surviving family members who participate in the monthly group support meetings. We are planning to start our third Volunteer Training Course. To date Hospice volunteers have given over 1130 hours of service to hospice patients. We have been certified both Medicare and Medicaid provider, and thereby will receive reimbursement under both programs. I expect our first Medicare check any day. We receive $43.00 for each skilled nursing and social service visit. We continue to work very closely with the Health District Hospice Home Care program. They were extremely helpful in developing the curriculum for the Volunteer Training Course and in the training itself. Hospice volunteers serve patients in the Health District Hospice and Nathan Adelson Hospice. "Lifelines," the bereavement support group sponsored by Nathan Adelson Hospice, draws members from surviving family members of Health District Hospice patients as well as our own program. Dr. Otto Ravenholt has agreed to participate with a number of other physicians in the design development of the facility. It is essential that we continue to pursue all opportunities for cooperation between our two programs. Facility Development The architects are working on the plans for the facility. We intend to start construction in August, 1981. There are a number of sites being explored. Irwin Molasky has written to the Chancellor regarding the merit of the University site. Owen Peck, Assistant Dean of the Medical School, has been extremely helpful. On November 19, 1980, we submitted our Application for Letter of Approval (Certificate of Need) for the development of the facility. 3201 S. Maryland Parkway - Las Vegas, Nevada 89109 - 702-733-0320 2 Fund Raising Irwin Molasky, Merv Adelson, A1 Benedict and Dr. Charles Kilduff are spear-heading the fund raising effort. Meetings of the Special Cifts, Casino, and Physician committees have been held. At this time there is over $1,000,000 committed to the project. 1 want to point out that we also have received nearly $4,500 in memorial contributions from friends and families of patients served by Nathan Adelson Hospice and in response to Cristi McCarty's request that donations to Nathan Adelson Hospice be made in memory of her husband, Bill McCarty. Executive Committee Meeting A meeting of the Executive Committee is scheduled for THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18th, at 4:00 P.M. in the Hospice office. We will have a meeting of the full Board early in January. Members of the Executive Committee are: Since we will be discussing a number of very important matters, all other members of the Board of Trustees are encouraged to attend. Promotion of the Hospice Concept We have had over two hours of television time during the past six weeks. Of special note is a half-hour show, "Close Up," which will feature a segment on hospice volunteers. It is scheduled to air on Sunday, November 30th, at 5:30 p.m., on Channel 13. Chris Cochran and Terry James have spent several hours interviewing volunteers, patients and staff and feel their efforts will result in a prize-winning presentation.
