I agree.United States of America Congressional Record PROCEEDINGS AND DEBATES OF THE 100th CONGRESS, FIRST SESSION Vol. 133_WASHINGTON, MONDAY, MARCH 30, 1987__No. 5J Senate TRIBUTE TO UNLV "RUNNIN' REBELS" ? Mr. HECHT. Mr. President, as the fans of college basketball await the men's NCAA National Championship game to be played in New Orleans tonight, I would like to take a few moments to recognize my hometown team, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas "Runnin' Rebels." Indeed, I am proud to say that for the first time in 10 years, the UNLV Rebels, led by head coach Jerry Tarkanian, made it to the Final Four. Unfortunately, their season ended Saturday in an outstanding game against Indiana University. Although the loss to Indiana is unfortunate for UNLV and Rebel fans, their overall season is hardly a disappointment. The Rebel's with 37 wins and 2 losses, tied the mark for the most victories in one season. Additionally, the Rebels have scored in triple figures in 12 of their 39 games; a statistic not common to college basketball. But Mr. President, what makes these players extra special is their offcourt performance. For instance, the "plain old hard work" that Coach Tarkanian credits his teams' success with is also found in the classroom, where six seniors are expected to graduate this year. And for those of us who saw the game, we witnessed an excellent demonstration of personal courage by Mark Wade, UNLV's star point guard. We saw Mark at halftime in a prerecorded statement that began the campaign to raise $125,000 for Valerie Pida, A UNLV cheerleader who is suffering from Hodgkin's disease and needs the money to pay for a bone marrow transplant. Mr. President, as athletics provides an excellent tool for furthering the education of our young people, I take great pride in recognizing this years' performance of our wonderful student/athletes at UNLV. When Coach Tarkanian, the winningest coach percentagewise of alltime, fields another team next year, I know we can look forward to an equally exciting basketball season.? United Stales of America
