One of them was today's declarer, who tried the trump finesse at the second trick. Back then, apart from moments of rousing dance, the only thing the Theater Review _________________________ musical had going for it was Late Late Show memories eomplimenLs of Jane Powell and Howard Keel who gamely lumbered through roles that had made them famous 25 years before. In their latest go at Broadway, producer-adapters Lawrence Kasha and David Linday (?╟úWoman of the Year") have wisely shunned the nostalgia route and concentrated instead on the piece?╟╓s youthful bravado and gruff charm. The difference is remarkable. Oh sure, the ?╟úSobbin' Women" storyline is still twig-thin alld the new Al Kasha-Joel Hirschhom songs aren't half as listenable as the old Johnny Mercer-Gene de Paul ones (four of which are featured here). But that don?╟╓t make no never mind ?╟÷ ?╟úSeven Brides" is now a thigh-slapping, whoop-de-do of a good time certain to bring a smile to your face, iffn you let it. Pop singer Debby Boone is now starred as Milly, the Oregon Territory gal who ups and marries a sweet-talkin?╟╓ farmer only to learn he wants a live-in maid Hulk hankers for hunk in ?╟ Swamp?╟╓ Bv Murry Frymer Movie Writer 'I'HE name of the movie is ?╟úSwamp Thing.?╟Ñ This tells you right off that it's probably not JL at all like ?╟úOrdinary People" or ?╟úChariots of Fire." Right ?╟úSwamp Thing" is kind of like ?╟úThe Incredible Hulk Meets the Incredible Hunk.?╟Ñ Rav Wise in a Movie Review green rubber suit, made to look like an overgrown plant, is the hulk Adrienne Barbeau. who needs no makeup to look overgrown, is the hunk. The whole thing has to do with some super-rapid fertilizer that Wise has perfected and that bad guv Louis Jourdan wants. The fertilizer stuff gets dumped all over Wise, explodes, sets him on fire, and when he falls into the swamp, turns him into ?╟÷* fanfare ?╟÷ Swamp Thing! Now he is going to take revenge on the lowlife that did this to him ?╟÷ Jourdan. But then Jourdan sends his henchmen out, one of whom cuts off Wise?╟╓s arm, etc. etc. etc. Ldf us put all that aside and consider for a moment the adult part of this story ?╟÷ Miss Bar-beau. Now there is a lass without a lack. She wanders around the swamps in a low-cut gown and high heels, a paen to nature. Ah, where was I? Ah yes. ?╟úSwamp Thing " Producers Benjamin Melnicker and Michael Us-lan (who used to write for DC Comics) and director-writer Wes Craven, a former college prof whose film background is mostly gore and horror, seem to hope that the film will catch on, leading to ?╟úSwamp Thing II,?╟Ñ etc. They have the big green monster waving goodbye at the end. promising to return. Well, it just goes to show you how far you can go with fertilizer. SWAMP THING. Released by Embassy Pictures. Starring Louis Jourdan, Adrienne Barbeau and Ray Wise. Rated PG (violence, distant nudity). for himself and his six dumb-galoot brothers. Wc already know Boone can sing ?╟÷ which means her ?╟úWonderful Wonderful Day?╟Ñ and ?╟úGoin' Oaarting solos are expected treats ?╟÷ but the lady ? spunky performance and fine footwork take us completely by surprise. Boone plays the ?╟úsimple and sweef but as sassy as can be?╟╓?╟╓ Milly as if her very life depended on it Which is the only way you can keep a crowd rooting for such a cornball heroine Likewise, her strapping costars go aH-out u ignite this flimsy frontier fable. David-James Carnal is excellent as the bull-headed Adam, who talks he heartsick brothers into going into town and carrying off their girlfriends. Carroll strikes just the right kustery tone on ?╟úBless Your Beautiful Hide,?╟Ñ then goes for the hurt betrayed look on Act 2?╟╓s ?╟úA Woman Ought to Know Her Place.?╟Ñ Only the youngest of the six brothers, Gideon, is showcased, and Craig Peralta (who helped try out the musical In 79) is both cute and intense enough to win the audience's favor. As was the case when this show first bowed rustic , charm and exuberant dance carry us through " (ho 1 Jgeak first act, while silliness and dance coverTor the front of the footlights (for the------ ?╟÷ 0?╟ Spring Dance"). The best of the new Al Kasha-Joel Hirsehhorn tunes is the lilting, if derivative. ^Love Never Goes Away?╟Ñ ballad; the worst, the goaty ?╟úGlad That You Were Born?╟Ñ lullaby (staged like a ?╟úChristmas with the Boone Family?╟Ñ TV special). But again it?╟╓s the amazing, all-stops-pulled hoofin' that will make vou glad voti' stopped m. The Jerry Jackson choreography ?╟÷ heavy on leaps i ?╟ wheels and fancy iigs - k every bit as bre breathtaking^ as what Michael Kidd created for the serctm.
