NIGHT AND DAY Living It Up For Week at the Sands' BY CHARLIE EVANS > jl* BACK TO THE MILL after oar annual three-week vaca- tion during which We spent an alLtoo-short week at /the1 beautiful Sands Hbtel in Las Vegas., We long have thought that a week in Las Vegas would be too much, but after trying it we found that actu- ally it is too short a visit to this fabulous resort that has come to be the entertainment capital of the country; As a matter of fact, as we plodded, around forking in the yard and took a fling at pushing a paint brush during the rest of our vacation, we thought time and again tnat we, should have spent the entire vacation ?╟úliving it up?╟Ñ at the Sands. _ 1 To-give a brief idea of the top-flight entertainment avail- able in Las Vegas, here is a partial list of shows playing^ during our stay: Peter Lind Hayes and Mary Healy. at tije; Sands: Joe E. Lewis at Rancho Vegas'and Sophie Tucker opened at the same hotel that week; Ted Lewis and Marie i (The Boify) McDonald at the Desert Inn; the Riviera Sti^ ! has the New York company in ?╟úThe Pajama Game?╟Ñ; ?╟ Jam Murray and the Mills Brothers were holding forth at the ?√ß Flamingo and Jack Benny and Gisele Mackenzie opened there during, our sisy in Jack?╟╓s first supper club perform* ; ance; Martha Raye was at the Sahara; Jacqueline Francois*' ?╟≤ the French singing star, was the Tropicana headliner,, arid ; Cab Calloway and his Cotton Club Rejpie at the Royaf ?√ß Nevada. a- _ ?╟≤ / r': i '' That?╟╓s a lot of top talent to see in a, brief week,, bvjt it i can be done by catching two shows a night. We did and, loved every minute of it. THIS AND THAT: Visitors, get quite a kick out of a sign? at a service station between the Las Vegas ?╟ústrip?╟Ñ and) ?╟≤ the airport. It reads: ?╟úFree aspirin and tender sympathy.]^ ' . Jack Benny, who was making his first supper club i stand at the Flamingo, told us he just wanted to give ft a 1 try. Then as an ?╟úafter-thought,?╟Ñ he added that the.$6O;0O?½ i per week has SOMETHING' to do With his decision. Jack, : by the Way,?╟╓has been a Houston visitor on several oceasippjs,.' i says this is one of his favorite towns. . . . Scores of Hous;' ; tonians, .making the trip to Las Vegas by plane and auto \ , for their vacation stay. Airlines report a big jump in ervations this summer over previous years. . . . And, was .V* saw several former Balinese Room and Shamrock captains \ , at the Vegas hotels. Marcel is a captain in. the supper club at the Tropicana and Marino holds a similar position- -itt the Copa Room at the Sands. . 3 . A1 Freeman, the genial , publicist at the Sands and certainly one of the best in th$ ?╟╓ business, also serves as co-ordinator for the newsreel cam* eramen for the A-bomb tests' being made on the desert spine 70 miles from Las Vegas. AROUND AND ABOUT: Catching up on some of the goings-on while we were away. Visiting town last week before taking off on a Valley trip was former Chronicle staffer Sid Bulla, now with the Chicago Sun' Times... The florist contention dance chair- man has booked Buddy Brock and his orchestra for the group?╟╓s Wednesday shimdig at the Rice Hotel. . . . That was singer Tommy Sands stopping for a quick sandwich at Dorsey Wier?╟╓s Cock ?╟╓n?╟╓ Bull Grill before his Monday night performance at the Coliseum. . . . Culligan Soft Water Co.?╟╓s Gene Steele and wife, Van, planning a trip to the state of Washington..,. Civil Defense Administrator Bill Hollis and wife, Lois, building a new Woodside home.... James B. Page takes over as prexy of the Associated Plumbing Con- tractors at Tuesday?╟╓s installa- tion of officers. . . .
