This Committee cooperated with the Symphony Association in the highly successful presentation of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra Concert and recently resolved a plan for the handling of Christmas contributions of food, clothing and toys, to prevent iniquities that have existed in past years, thereby assuring a maximum coverage of the deserving families. Other projects under consideration, include a Community Welfare Index and cooperation with the National Safety Council for projects in this area. ACTION COURSE IN| PRACTICAL POLITICS ?╟÷ This course, open to businessmen and general public alike, gives the individual insight into everyday politics. It was developed by the National Chamber at the request of businessmen who felt their views would receive a better "hearing?╟Ñ if they were more active and effective in politics. To date 56 of our community leaders have taken the eight-week course, and two new classes are about to begin . ' f " * ?╟≤, ' ' , ECONOMIC DISCUSSION GROUP - Also developed by the National Chamber to counter-acf creep ing socialism in our free enterprise system,' this course, open to everyone, consists of 17 pamphlets, covering key economic principles, with special emphasis on analysis and the solution of those problems facing busi- nessmen today. Last month the third class completed its instruction and enrollments for future courses are now being taken. , VOTER EDUCATION NIGHT - THE ELECTION HANDBOOK - Sponsored by the Chamber's Political Action Committee, a non-partisan "Voter Education" meeting was held in October, to assist interested voters in informing themselves on election procedure and the prepositions that appeared on the November ballot. A panel of experts, comprised of Helen Scott Reed, County Clerk; Russell McDonald, Director of the State Stature Revision Commission and Dis trict Judge John Mowbray, who acted as moderator, were on hand to cover the subject. In line withi the Chamber's policy of arousing political awareness, an "Election Handbook", containing a calendar of election days, showing offices to be f i I led and registration rules and deadlines, was compiled and dislributed to the membership. This work was so well received, that subsequent orders were filled fop additional copies at the request of business and political groups. The work of the Chamber, outlined as staff activities, is only a portion of the Chamber's effective impact on fhe community. The natural objective of any Chamber of Commerce, particularly the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, is the work of It's active committees, composed of interested business people of our community. Several hundred people are involved in these committees, voluntarily devoting their time and energies t6 these projects. COMMITTEES AVIATION COMMITTEE - Directly aided in the passage of a vitally needed bond issue to improve facilities atrMcCarran Airfield. A sub-committee works closely with the McCarran Airfield management, in an advisory capacity, to assist in every way possible in this important project. In November, 1960, t he oneTmilftonth air passenger at McCqrran Airfield was honored in q ceremony and presentation of gifts through thf efforts of this Committee. AIRLINE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE - examined commercial air setvice requirements and worked with the City Attorney and other government officials in the preparation of exhaustive exhibits for the Civil Aeronautic Board hearings and several members appeared as witnesses at CAB hearings, concerning the Southern Transcontinental Service Case and the Pacific Southwest Local Service Case. Both of these cases, when resolved, will provide additional air service to Las Vsgas from areas not now being served. The Committee, at this time, is preparing exhibits and making plans for appearances' in connection with the Southern Rocky Mountain Local Service Case. CONGRESSIONAL ACTION COMMITTEE ~ is sub-divided into eight divisions for studying proposed Federal Legislation and has been very effective in its recommendations of these matters, where they affect 1 the Southern Nevada area. Ten members of this Committee attended the U. S. Chamber of Commerce Congressional Aircade in Pasadena and, subsequently, presented an informative program to the membership at a regular luncheon.
