FACT SHEET CLARK COUNT! ASSOCIATION FOR RETARDED CHILBREN Parents and friends of retarded youngsters got together eleven years ago and established CCARC, a charitable Nevada corporation and affiliate of National Association for Retarded Children, in an effort to establish some type of schooling for their then unacceptable retarded children. "Unacceptable", in this dase means not acceptable to the Clark County School District, There were no classes offered then for retarded school age youngsters. For several years, private schools were started and operated, but these did not survive the expense of maintaining a facility and hiring special education teachers? and it was not until 1956 that the Clark County School District offered "Special Children?╟╓s Clinic", for pre-school retarded children. In 1957 Variety School, which had been in operation for five years for the physically handicapped children, opened its doors to the retarded children. This class was offered to children between the ages of 8 to 18, but they did not accept the severly retarded. To date, there is no government agency in Clark County meeting the needs of severely retarded children, but the Clark County School district does have one of the finest special education programs in the nation. At the present time, the CCARC has realized one of its original goals, that is, the acceptance of the trainable and educable retarded in the xk school district. It is now working toward establishing a Bsidential training center for the severely retarded (Nevada is the tolyjrtate in the nation which does not provide institutional situations and sheltered workshop facilities for its severely retarded). As a first step toward the establishing of this type of facility, CCARC is operating an Opportunity Center at 918 South 4-th Street, which the association subsidizes by proceeds from their North Las Vegas Thrift Shop, donations from"! local groups and organizations, membership dues, as well as fund-raising activities such asthe yearly concert, rummage sales, etc. At the Opportunity Center there are six morning children who are severly retarded school age youngsters not accepted into the school district?╟╓s program. These morning children
