CITY OF HOPE Public Relations Dept. 626-4611 (Hank Brown) (Suggested Column Material) PAUL ENDACOTT To those who remember his exploits on the court, there never was quite another basketball player like Paul Endacott, the all-time All-American and Hall of Famer from the University of Kansas. Now a distinguished, urbane retired oil company executive, Endacott will add to his list of deserved tributes when he is among those great athletes of the past honored at the Third Annual Sportsmen's World Awards Presentations at the Sands Hotel, Las Vegas, on June 28. The presentations of golden "Victor" statuettes, symbolic of the Sportsmen's-World Award, and accompanying ceremonies, are sponsored by the Sportsmen's Club for the City of Hope Medical Center, with proceeds going to aid the famed hospital and research facility in its battle against catastrophic disease. Endacott's success in sports could have well been foretold from the time he was a youngster. As a boy of eight, he gained a measure of notoriety when he dove twenty feet from a platform into a small lake on the University of Kansas campus, where he later was to make his mark as a basketball star. Endacott's first contact with the game was as one of the "guinea pig" lads for the game's inventor, Dr. James Naismith. He played, both high school and college basketball as well as in a local church league, where he once scored 44 points in a game..., this in an era when 44 points often constituted the total scoring of both teams. At the University of Kansas, Endacott earned all-American honors in 1922 and 1923* and was captain of famed coach "Phog" alien's unbeaten 1923 Missouri Valley conference champions. According to Allen, speaking a few years ago at the age of 79) "Endacott was one of the greatest. He was a great driver. He would have been a terrific fullback...." Endacott joined the Phillips Petroleum Co. directly out of college and. worked his way up through the ranks to president. He retired as Chairman of the Board of that firm. Naturally, Endacott had a large role in bringing into prominence the famed Phillips "Oilers" basketball team of the 'forties and 'fifties. Now retired, Paul Endacott remains an outstanding example of a true sportsman, dedicated, to his family, many philanthropies, and the advancement of fair play and good fellowship. # # # Q-xz
