REBISTER (EVENING) D. 90,000 JUN 2 8 1969 Sammy Lee Among II Feted Tonight At Vegas Awards ^Santa Ana?╟╓s Dr. Sammy Lee, one of America?╟╓s most outstand- ing Olympic Games performers, will be among those honored tonight at the third annual Sportsmen?╟╓s World Awards ban- quet at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev. Others to be saluted are Sam- my Baugh, football; Don Budge, tennis; Peter De Paolo, auto racing; Paul Endicott, basket- ball; Bob Feller, baseball; Ted Lindsay, ice hockey; Rocky Marciano, boxing; Lloyd Man- grum, golf, Cornelius Warmer- dam, track and field, and C.K. Yang, special international award. This year?╟╓s show honors ?╟úchampionship . performers whose performances and exem- plary personal conduct have served as an inspiration to peo- ple in aU walks of Me,?╟Ñ accord- ing to the citations. A native Californian, Dr. Lee first rose to sports fame when he won the National AAU out- door platform diving champion- ship in 1940, representing Occi- dental College. He won gold medals in diving at both the 1948 and 1952 Olympics and in 1953 was awarded the James E. Sullivan Award which annually goes to the American athlete ?╟úwho did the most to advance the cause of good sportsman- ship.?╟Ñ After serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Lee began his medical practice in Santa Ana, where he is an ear- nose-throat specialist. Expected to attract a capaci- ty crowd of 800, tonight?╟╓s show is to be syndicated foir national television. Proceeds jgofed sup- port the City of Hope in further- ing its program of patient care, research and medical education against catastrophic diseases. DR. SAMMY LEE a salvo for 11 champions
