Abstract
The collection is comprised of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Foreign Languages records from 1969 through 1999. The records, collected by Spanish professor Dr. Donald (Don) Schmiedel, document the change and growth of the Department of Foreign Languages as well as courses offered, scheduling, department meetings, and faculty meetings.

Scope and Contents Note
The records (1969-1999) are comprised of internal and external correspondence, meeting minutes, department memoranda, and administrative paperwork relating to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Foreign Languages created and maintained by Dr. Don Schmiedel in his role as department chair. The majority of the records are from the 1980s and 1990s which document the continuing development and improvement of the department while the records from the 1960s and 1970s document the establishment of the Foreign Languages Department as Nevada Southern University transitioned to become the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

Biographical / Historical Note
Dr. Donald (Don) Schmiedel is a retired professor of foreign languages specializing in Spanish. Dr. Schmiedel started his career at Nevada Southern University and continued to work for the university when it became the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in 1969. Dr. Schmiedel retired from UNLV in 1999.

These records are unprocessed. A rough inventory of the accession was created by Maggie Bukowski in 2017. To prepare the inventory, the described materials were reviewed to create a contents list, estimate dates, and identify material types. Item-level assessment has not been completed.
