/ 4 f PLAN FOR BRIDGE TOURNAMENT AT SANDS HOTEL In general, the tournament would follow the plan of the gin rummy tournament: two days of qualifying play, then two days of final play together withk second chance tournament for non-qualifiers. The game would be ordinary money bridge, or rubber bridge. This is not tournament bridge. It is the game that people play at home or at the country club. Many country club players are unfamiliar with ordinary tournament bridge but would welcome a chance to show their skill at the game that they know. In the first two days of qualifying play, ?½ach pair would play 8 hands of ordinary bridge against another pair. At the end of the 8 hands, they would add up the score (kept in the usual way), and determine which side was the winner. Then each pair would meet a different pair; and so on. After two days, we would qualify the top 16 or the top 32 pairs ?╟÷ whatever we decided in advance. This could be made to depend on the size of the entry. These pairs would meet in straight knockout play, as in the finals of the gin rummy tournament. We could start with matches of 10 hands and move up to a 16-hand match for the finals. The longer the match, the better chance that skill will settle the outcome. A match of 8 or 10 hands takes about 1 hour to play. If 8 such matches per day in the first two days seems too long, we could shorten each qualifying match to 6 hands. This is something to discuss. In $he final sessions, we could have 3 matches the first day, and the last two matches on the final day. We could handle up to 128 players in the consolation tournament in one day. If we had more than that, we could handle it as in the gin tournament by holding over the last two or the last four for the second day of the finals. This wodld not really compete with the tournament at the Riviera, but some of the same people would want to play. Therefore it should be scheduled for a different time of the year. As you know, tournament bridge players are not particularly interested in the casinos. Money bridge players are a different breed. This could be a very good tournament for the Sands, but if the hotel doesn't want to run a bridge tournameiifc, one of the other hotels will. Several of the other hotels, during the last two or three years, hhve spoken to me about some sort of bridge tournameiufc, and I have shown no interest. If the Sands decides that it definitely is not interested in a bridge tournament, I will feel free to take this up with one of the other hotels. I much prefer to work with you (A1 Freeman), so will wait any reasonable amount of time ?╟÷ but don't string this out too long because one oflUie other hotels might stafct a similar idea ??w with somebody else. It would Be a l?ig advantage to be first. 544 Loring Avenue Los Angeles, California 90024 GRanite 4-0679
