i^JilL ens PRESS CLIPPING BUREAU Established 1888 SAN FRANCISCO Los Angeles Portland - Seattle Las Vegas, Nev. Review Journal (Cir. 11,043) jun 16 mm r \_Jn the m?╟÷*c own ___{_ with alan jarlson- The Rialto After Dark One of the strangest sights seen nitely by bistro lovers takes place in the cocktail lounge of El Rancho Vegas immediately following the show in the Opera House. The waves of patrons flock to the lounge to see and hear the fabulous; Steve Gibson Redcaps?╟÷who put on a show all their own. With knowledge that the Redcaps were originally advertised as being featured in the regular stage show but were pulled out to bloster biz in the lounge, the show-goers make a mad dash for tables there to catch the second half of what they consider to be a double bill... And in the lounge, too, they encounter once again, lovely Damita Jo sinking with the Redcaps following her chore in the supper room. Two of the highlights of the current Sahara show fare is the beautifully impressionistic Coronation Ball (byfthe Sa-Harem Dancei in the breathtaking finale of the"*show, and tcomic Jack Cartel revival of his newsreel skit plus.his terrific^^^flce-off on Al Jolsd One of the most unhappy visitors in town over the last weekei was Harry Delmar, one of the creators of "Jfollow The Girls," cu rently at the Flamingo... He says he can't understand why ti hotel is paying about three grand (for the twlfweek run) in royaltie for the musical comedy when the only excerpt used is Rose Marie! song "I Wanna Get Married." While others try hard to milk an audience for yaks, the little! master, Sparky Kaye (in the Silver Slipper show) can lift an eyebrow, or with a straight face, lift the laff meter to 1,000. Sparky is a mister technician of comidy... Give him a major line to read and you'll really see something! k James Melton's vocalizing (with German lyrics) of /'Here Is My Heart" is a show stopper ?╜ the Thunderbird ... His auto with the surrey on top (in the lobby'W the hotel) rates equal raves. The contrasting musical j|Kterns offered at the Sands being equally received is an amazinipthing to behold ... You jump thru the roof with Louis Armstrong ||hd his jive combo, then you're presented ecstatic moments of reff beauty with Robert Merrill as he transports, j|u on a musicalJpurney that you wish would never come to an end . .. Accompanying Merrill is our own maestro Ray Sinatra. Ray does a magnificang^ob from "Mattinata" thru Merrill's entire repertoire, and you befllj|e in his success at the keyboard to ?╜ich an exifeSt you can agree wth thf Metropolitan Opera star that it was entirely unnecessary to jijck along his own accompanist. Midnite Memos: I can now J^oint the finger to those persons who chided us early this year whS/we first mentioned the new hotel to be built south of El RanchoJphe story was verified in this newspaper yesterday with the annaileement that the Sunrise Hotel is to be built on that property... Incidentally, the builder of the Sunrise and the bfdlder of the proposed Kismet Hotel are not on the best of terms (tdplit it mildly) ... Shereje North (former Flamingo chorine) has leftJhe Broadway cast of "Hazel Flagg" and is now under long- term c<flt|act at Columbia Studios in Hollywood ... An individual by the name of Johnny Myers lis honoring Las Vegas by picking up a fevttabs here and there .. ,Here is a dog-bite-man news item: The newest singing sensation, Norman Brooks (who sings jt8& like* Jolson) is booked into the Thujfilerbird July 23 and will actually get less money for his stint here than he will in New York's Copacabana. Generally the shoe is very much on the Las Vegas foot when it comes to entertainers' paychecks ... Kalantan has X'ed herself Out the forthcoming Silver Slipper Parisian folies until she completes her pic-chore at RKO. One of these days I'm going to sit down and total the complete number of entertainers currently employed in Las Vegas .. .The big package deals bringing in large companies of artists must total an incredible number of people who are pouring large amounts of moola into the Vegas cash registers for living and pleasure expenses while in town .. .
