JUN 3-1953 ?╓¬ On the Hollywood Scene * Herb Stein J No Release for 'Yankee Boodle'; Wyman Exclusively Warners'; New Hit Turiefor Hayworth HOLLYWOOD, CaL?TOe 2.?╟÷One of the big- best grossers Warners ever had, "Yankee Doodle Dandy," rests in the studio's negative vault, destined for complete oblivion. Seems the studio failed to pick up the re-issue rights with the George M. Cohan estate and the picture can't be re-released even though it'd make a fortune., The story rights reverted back to the estate * . . As soon as Marie Wilson winds her "Marry Me^ffpSnM"' picture for Alex GottKeJaflshe'll break in her night cjubact at Del Mar before her Sjoiffs Hotgjrengagement in Las /Vegas.. .Incidentally, CBS went all out in cooperating with Marieso she could do this picture. Filnpid and taped?╜tfer TV and radio shows in advance, so she'd^kave no extra work during the filming bf.Jtbe'^Gottlieb production... Sam Spiegel ran "Melba" for a select group at M-G-M, on Leo's wide-screen. He re-dubbed the entire picture for stereophonic sound?╟÷and from what we hear, it's a knockout.. Could be another "Caruso" femalewise, Patrice Munsel delivering with wallop... Lotta stories around about Jane Wy- maniBnng this and that picture on a participation deal for various producers. Janie is tied up exclusively with Warners and unless the Burbank plant loans her out or switches her contract to a non-exclusive arrangement, ^ she ain't, making any outside pictures anywhere. ?√? ' PREDICTION: Rita Hayworth will have a big hitune/ln Columbia's "Sadie Thompson" for Jerry Wald-i-a number called "Sadie's Song" written by Ned Washington and Lester Lee and touted by impartial listeners of her pre-recording as a new classic in a blues number.. Rosemarl' Clooney is sizzling over those stories she hears about Rita Hayworth and Jose Ferrer from the Honolulu location of "Sadie Thompson"...Oscar Levant ai a party the other night, darted about a man-about- Hollywood: "When Lincoln was his age he was already assassbjtted.. .Levant, b?· the way, is feeling fine eaprept for getting his union problem gleaned up with Petrillo... On a recent trip east, Utan Richardson of the Hollywood Coordinating committee, was in the elevator of the Waldorf en route to a party, There was another chap in the lift with him and both exchanged warm greetings. When the fellow stepped out of the elevator, Richardson turned to the operator and said, "That fellow's face is familiar. Who is he? The reply: "The Duke'of Windsor".,. .Local playboy tr;ied picking up a chick at Hollywood and Vine. The galsaid, "You wouldnit be interested in me. I'm 13." Don't worry," he retorted, "I'm not superstitious." T LAS VEGAS MUST have hit an all-time high over the holiday weekend. They were shoe-horning 'em into every hotel, motel, and trailer camp?╟÷ to say naught of visitors who slept in their own petrol wagons for lack of rooms...Friend of Alex Gottlieb's just finished with a "psychological-block, party"...In a trade paper ad titled "Should We Junk the Film Industry?" Russell Birdwell says: "A fifth column is glutting Hollywood. It is more subversive than any we have ever known before. It is spreading fear and panic and despair. This shocking sell-out of Hollywood is coming?╟÷not from the outside?╟÷but from well-meaning, highly respected people from within our own industry. Hollywood's newest and most popular game is to fashion a coffin for the industry that has rewarded the players with f^me and fortune. In this suicidal game it has become great sport to see how many nails can be driven into the cinema coffin during a single luncheon. The Hollywood merchants of doom fall into two classes: those who envision spider webs spun on dark, empty sound stages and the carnival hucksters who would sell out a great industry ior a fast buck?╟÷Hollywood now is faced with surviving its own worst campaign: Hollywood vs. Hollywood. The time has come, as Will Hays said a long time ago: 'To lay bricks?╟÷not throw them.'" ?√? WE TOLD YOU a story the other day about fastidious, proper, always-the-gourmet Arthur Horn* blo3sr. Another yarn about Arthur concerns a recent party he tossed. All very elegant, as only he can do it. This one particular guest got loaded and j in the middle of the evening tossed all he'd eaten over the Hornblow rug. Arthur glared at him m disdain, was about to sound off, when the sick one looked up and flipped, "Arthur, don't worry. The white wine came up with the fish!" \_j_^_?║__^_^^__ bCTOR'ClOlU SANDS, LAS VEGAS Las Vegas.?╟÷One thing the fewest Sands show.prGves is that musically j Xm&wearV audiences are growing up. j When the same cash customers can whistle and hoot and howl to the jive of Louis Armstrong, and then cheer and stamp their feet and hold Metro- i politan Opera star Robert Merrill for ; repeated encores, then one might say j American audiences have become mu- j sical adults. Jack Entratter has mounted a handsome production with neat choreography by the eight Copa girls and four I new chorus boys; by the dancing Cer- neys, who delight with grace and rhythm under effective light patterns. Rotund Satchmo was greeted at packed second show opening night | with great fanfare. He tooted his horn aplenty and vocalized much better than i his imitators who have recently been hitting Vegas. Armstrong gets capable | assist from top specialists: Marty Na- I poleon, piano; Cozy Cole, drums; J T rummy Young, trombone; Arvel j Shaw, bass; Barney Bigard, clarinet; j Velma Middleton, vocals. A jam ses- \ sion brings out every man's particular | talent, and ovations for each strained I the rafters. Satch gravels with "When It's Sleepy Time Down South," pitches | to Jimmy McHugh in the audience I with "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby," then socks across the New Orleans boogie j|rsion of "Bucket's Cot a Hole in It." Big and ; buxom Miss Middleton comes on to sing "Here's News for You, Baby" and ; "Mamma's Back in Town." She I amazes with adept dancing climaxed by split. Armstrong assists on trumpet J and vocal of their platter success, J "That's My Desire." This marks initial cafe appearance of Merrill, and he opens with "Matti- nata," "Falling in Love With Some- | one," then sings "I Believe" so feel- | ingly that he emphasizes the impres- | sion that this ballad must tak^a lasting | place in American music. Merrill's | change of pace is smooth as he | swings into "Figaro" from "Barber of 1 Seville." Encores demandecLby opening night audience, comprising to a | great extent a glittering Hollywood I crowd, included "Some Enchanted I Evening," with a terrific imitation of I Pinza; "Sorrento," "Old Man River" and the "Whiffenpoof Song." Orch \ leader Ray Sinatra rates raves as Mer- i rill's accompanist. ""*f)^J This package will have no trouble drawing 'em. ?╟÷Bob Clemens.
