X NEWSMEN ON ATOMIC EXPLOSION AT YUCCA FLATS. NEVADA , Lower picture, left to right, Roy1 Kluver, News of the Day; Willard Vander Veer, Warner Pathe; Fred Dieterich and Dan Rouzer, Telenews; Charles Lehmann, Movietone, U.P.; Jack Lep- pert and Dexter Alley, NBC; Red Starr, sound. Top photo shows Lehmann with the German Astro lens he used on standard Auricon professional camera; adaptation made by Paul A. Heise. Lehmann says, "We were located on News Nob 7% miles from blast. Set up was made in darkness as blast took place at 5:20 a.m. From this distance with 26" lens the fire ball filled full screen. At 5:20 a.m. Weston meter reading was zero-zero, in 10 seconds (this time included initial blast), the fire ball equaled 75 times the intensity of noon-day sun. In first second after blast the light dropped to f/11, next second to f/8, f/5.6, f/3, to zero-zero within the ten second period. Used Eastman Background X film, wide open, and results were satisfactory. I believe this to be the longest focus lens ever mounted on an Auricon or any other 16-mm. camera." Other newsmen covering the event, but not shown in the picture, were Norman Alley, San- ford Greenwald; Carl Yost; Tom Burnie. ?╟÷Photos by Dan Rouzer. International Photographer for May, 1953 21 u r
