T JESSE H.JDNES - JO H N T. JO N ES, Jr. PUBLISHER * PRESIDENT THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE FIRST IN HOUSTON-FIRST IN TEXAS June 23, 1958 Mr. Al Freeman, Publicity Directory The Sands Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada Dear Al: Inclosed are tear sheets of the stories and items we have usee in connection with the Sands Copa Girl Contest which was announced a week ago, June 15. We have 16 entries in to date and with three weeks to go - or almost that lone, I feel sure that we will have more thai last year. If things run true to last year's entries, we received almost as many in the last week as we did during the rest of the contest. I have tentatively set up the judging and selection of winners for 5 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at the Music Hall stage (no audience unless some of the contestants parents, friends, etc. want to watch). The Music Hall is the same spot that Jack and you will be for the si judging of the "Miss Houston" contest that night, starting at 8 p.m. This way, we can select out winners, have a bite to eat and then judge the Miss Houston contest without having to run all over town for the two events. If this is okay with you all, I will make it definite. Al, I believe that if we can start the ads soon, it will be just that musto much more in the paper and whet that mueh more interest in the congest. Let me know what you think. Also let me know what your schedule will be for arrival here and what towns Jack and you will visit to select winners and the dates. I talked to Miss East the other day and today received a wire from her confirming the reservations for Dr. Henry and Mrs. Henry and their children. I know it took some doing because of the heavy weekend rush, particularly on the ^th weekend, and I want you to know how much I appreciate the trouble you and Miss East x^ent to to accomplish this for me. Hope that you and Jack had an enjoyable trip to Minneapolis. Give me a ring soon and we'll go over any other details that might come up. Best vp^^ds tc^all, Charlie Evans (
