This Weekend ?½lri Miami Btralb Friday, April 4, 1969 Section F J.. J .-.?╟÷^ ?√ß Wed., April 2, 1969 THE MIAMI NEWS 5-B lit '"?╜>?√ß ?√ß?╟≤ ?╟≤?╜"?√ß"' \jl]0iUJjI=a,MBgiiilMiM mmi:: 'Holiday on Ice9 Thing\ Of Beauty and Grace It's sweet music to the ears to hear the shrieks of laughter from boys and girls and the grownups as they clap their hands in glee at the comedy in "Holiday on Ice." And in a flash you hear the oh's and ah's as the glitter and beauty of this refrigerated extravaganza parades before them in Miami Beach Convention Hall. Madison Square Garden Corp. has acquired "Holiday" and Morris Chalfen, veteran president of the show is in charge. More money has been spent on the production than ever before. Director Donn Arden has melted down that bankroll with an extravagant layout for the lovely costuming. it's a show of speed from the opening "Hello New York" and the days of Lillian Russell and George M. Cohan to the Hollywood finale. Here the entire cast comes on as Shirley Temple, Doug Fairbanks, Judy Garland and the cowardly lion from "The Wizard of Oz" and the other greats of the silent and early sound movie eras. Werner Muller's three chimpanzees on RONNIE skates brought gales of laughter as they played hockey, leaped over hurdles. Alfred Mendoza and John Ladue, the front and rear of the Houn' Dog are back and they and the comical sailors tickled the funnybone. Anna Galmarini and Marie Langenbein are new skaters, exhibiting grace and techniques that make it seem like they're floating on air. Juanita Percelly, well known to local audiences, is doing her thing and she skims over the ice like a bird. Ronnie Robertson, in sequined suit, spins like crazy, so does Tommy Allen. Their twirls are blinding. The show is paced with big production numbers, fancy skating and clowning. A new comedy bit has been added with a Bonnie and Clyde get-a-way car that's a break-away, too. It falls apart, catches on fire, explodes, but still it runs. Paul Andre and Johnny Leech play the bank bandits. Tribute is paid to Fred Astaire with the leading female skaters and supporting cast skating to the top hat, ballet and Latin rhythms. And there's the Cook family ?╟÷ the parents, a small daughter and two sons. The girl looks to be about 7 years old but she's a whiz on skates and in balancing. Two thirds of the second act is devoted to "Star Time," taking us back to the old movie days. A lot of imagination has been put into the staging which emphasizes just about every form of skating, lightning speed and stunning wardrobe. Ben Stabler conducts the large orchestra of local musicians provided by Gene Roy and the music is excellent. In these days when we hear cries that there's no suitable clean entertainment for children or for adults who are sick of violence and dirt, "Holiday on Ice" is a fitting answer. You leave this show happy. For Holiday Weekend Big Choice Of Talent Here Now Avaoi ByGEOR Herald At, The Convention H Miami Beach offers a g1 quantity and variety of e mustered for the Easter us.
