SUNDAY MIRROR APR LEE MORTIMER Betty Grable Is Great In Latin Quarter Show A* I can tell?╟╓you, there are a lot of pleasantly excited people in this town. They?╟╓re the lucky ones who caught Betty Grable in her first New York cafe appearance at the Latin Quarter. They came to scoff and sneer. They went away cheering. It?╟╓s not because the years failed to change Betty?╟╓s famed limbs and figure, which are as girlish as ever. It?╟╓s because she?╟╓s a genuine- ly great performer who has the audience rolling and roaring and yelling all the way through her all too short act. MOST OF US figured here was .another Hollywood ?╟úfreak?╟Ñ in an attempt to turn back the calen- dar. Betty is no such thing. The trouble with sex-p6t publicity is that we forget the girl who?╟╓s in back of it sometimes has some- thing more than, sex. Betty's a shrewd cookie too; in building up a terrific supporting act to back her in her song and dance material. She carries four talented boys, namely Dean Campbell, Gene Hardy, Jim Hodge and John Drexel, while produeer DonnArden buili some special turrisior her with some of his line gals. A high spot is Betty's ?╟úsister act?╟Ñ with Joyce Roberts, of the Latin Quarter company. Her bit is a glorious surprise. It, stamps Joyee as stgr calibre and stamps Betty Grable as a genuine show- man in permitting another (and younger) gal to steal applause ih the interests, of a good perform- ance. m This Betty Grable is a perfect trouper. You will never see a better one. k SMART EDDIE RISMAN built a magnificent supporting show around his expensive ($18,000 a week) star. I can?╟╓t remember one that?╟╓s more enjoyable at E. M. Loew?╟╓s gilded pleasure palace. It opens with a bang with the Shaller Brothers who came in as a last minute replacement, andj aren't on the program. Whatf these two boys do on the tramf poline is absolutely miraculous! It just can't be done. But they 44 it. 1 In a reprise at the Quarter is I D o mini q ue, amazing young I French magician and ?╟úpickpodkf I et?╟Ñ whose act is one of the f astei I and funniest on the boards, f [ know all the gimmicks, but hiI always gives me a thrill. x 1 The stars are > dressed up by Arden?╟╓s grand and glamorous ?╟úAll About Dames?╟Ñ reviewed here previously/and better every time you see it, including blonde and busty Pony Sherrell, who sings and wrote the production material; Boubouka and her belly bumps; and Mitsuko Mori: gai, Japan?╟╓s gift to the White Way wolf -department. It's a wonderful show and a lot of fun and I loved every min- ute of , it. . .1."" """...11 ""l : -MISS GAMS HERSELF.
