Although this will be her I debut in a Broadway nitery, I Betty has long since achieved success on the stage, screen, of I course; bandstand; radio; tele- vision. In the latter medium she has associated with Dinah I Shore/Bob Hope, et el. This is a real big booking, this,Betty Grable date at the Latin Quarter. New is one of the brightest young acts on the supper club circuit?╟÷Little, Dane and Ma- son. they scored recently, I recall, at the Den m the Duane. Also new is Beatrice Reading, dramatic actress making her bow in an American night dub. A jaza singer, she was the first, I?╟╓m advised, to sing. the blues | in Russia. MAR 3 0 1959 DESERT INN I i-as Vegas.?╟÷This is a strong bill, nicely aimed at attracting the spring tourist hordes and also the Variety Clubs conventioneers now pouring in. Topliners Gordon and Sheila MacRae have a well-rounded act and Jackie Miles comedy is, as always, topical and top-rate. MacRae, never in better vocal form, baritone-barrels through ten tunes ?╟÷ jyWf peak reaction accruing to ?╟úOh, What A Beautiful Morning,?╟Ñ ?╟úMine Alone?╟╓?╟╓ and ?╟úPalace Of Love.?╟Ñ His frau joins him in, among other songs, a medley from ?╟úFlower Drum Song?╟Ñ snd they add color to the turn with their quite adept imitations of stars. Pair received tremendous aoolause at Windup. Miles standup routine evoked con- tinuous chuckling. His material is sharp and his takeoffs clever. The big production in the revue staged by Dowi^Arden bad its comedy connotations, too, as tipped by the K Red Riding, and the Hood. The Arden Dancers strutted to the vocaling of Myrna March and Art Johnson and Marlene Lizzio got some guffaws with her grandma bit. Carlton Hayes?╟╓ house orch backed the show, with Van Alexander assum- ing the baton for the MacRae act. In- cidentally:, this show is for families, a footnote which cannot be appended to many layouts these days in Vegas. ?╟÷-Gene Tlittle [THE KNIGHT WATCH Grable Radiates Gam-ma Raves By GENE KNIGHT npHE MOST BEAUTIFULLY-FORMED LEGS in show A business are on view these evenings at the Latin Quarter. They are the proud possession of the famed Betty Grable, Hollywood movie queen making her first appearance in a New York night club. She premiered last night as the star of Dop^^Arden?╟╓s brilliant revue, ?╟úAll About Dames.?╟Ñ They could have locked Betty up for causing a crowd to col- lect. For the large Latin Quar- ter was packed tighter than her hip-length sheer stockings. That?╟╓s pretty packing. The Hollywood headliner sang, danced and cut up like a comedienne. But it wasn?╟╓t until she dis- carded her long black lace gown and appeared in what looked like tights that Betty scored with impact. Wow! such sym- metry in a pair of human limbs is difficult to describe in simple words. Many Attributes For the boys in the audience who didn?╟╓t notice, I can report Miss Grable has platinum blond . hair, very nice* features, blue eyes and a figure that made every woman present envious Assisted by her four dancing- [ singing boys, Betty sang ?╟úThe I Lady?╟╓s in Love,?╟Ñ ?╟úThere He Goes,?╟Ñ Lovey Mine?╟Ñ and half a dozen other songs?╟÷some nostalgic. All of them were acceptable. She stepped well enough to keep up with her dancing boys and that?╟╓s rather good. Betty also did bits from her I films ?╟úMother Wore Tights,?╟Ñ 1?╟úWabash Avenue,?╟Ñ ?╟úThe Dolly | Sisters,?╟Ñ ?╟úTin Pan Alley,?╟Ñ etc. Betty Grable is not the best I singer in the niteries, nor is she the best dancer. But when a girl has a pair of glorious gams like Grable, who cares how she sings or even dances? | Betty has other assets. Wiggles, Too Why, she even tossed a few I wiggles while doing her fan- ] bubble-pigeon dance as a [ feature of a burlesque routine, | in which she was abetted by I Dick Curry, Joyce Roberts and I four girls?╟÷all from the L. Q. least. In addition to her well known legs, Betty has a most! pleasing personality. She! worked hard, ended up out of] breath and delivered an un- pretentious curtain speech that j revealed a down-to-earth at- titude, refreshing in show business. I ' ; As a night club entertainer; Grable is able?╟÷and her gams | are great. First of the new acts in thill Latin Quarter show was the] unusual turn of the Schaller | Brqjhers, trampoline experts, They bounced through the air I with the greatest of ease. Also new was Dominique, young French prestidigitator,. What he did with the personal! property of men in the audi- ence amounted to legalized I pocketpicking. A very clever^} amusing act. Rest of the regular revuch here has been held over?╟÷in- f eluding, of course, those LatirJ Quarter show girls who show] plenty. As usual, Jo Lombardi?╟╓s] band played for the dancing! customers.
