This Clipping From NEW YORK, N. Y. JOURNAL AMERICAN yfiE KNigffr WAIIH i Shawn a Click By GENE KNIGHT AKING HIS FIRST APPEARANCE in a Broadway night club, Dick Shawn, up-and-coming bright I Iroung comedian, opened at the Latin Quarter on Thurs-May evening as the star of ?╟úInternational Holiday for fLove,?╟Ñ a revue In it scenes. By the time he played his } second show early yesterday morning, the word had gotten around as far as Lindy's (where coffee-drinking comics congregate between dates) that this Shawn was something special in the funny business that, liven before that, however, crowds began to gather at the Ij. Q. When I arr^ed they already were lined up four and, five abreast at the silkeii rope manned by Maitre d?╟╓ Gigi and his aides. Dick Shawn is & large young fellow with a mop of wild hair and an informal approach to comedy. . He starts his monologue innocently enough, speaking slowly, * distinctly, quietly?╟÷sort of "soft sell/* Suddenly he erupts iiito action?╟÷-roaring his punch-lines at the top of his voice, singly loudly, dancing, juggling, high-kicking and putting on a scene of perpetual motion. With acrobatics yeti Had the customers agog. Strenuous Stuff This Shawn is strenuous stuff. He kept cutting up for almost an hour; proof of his | ANGELES, CALIF. HERALD-EXPRESS endurance and the endurance of the audience which loved every minute of it. Intelligent, a dramatic actor as well as comedian, Shawn is sharp in his timing. Also, he?╟╓s an alert mimic with a flair for the bizarre. Outstanding (as if Shawn ever does anything just standing)* was his Civil War bit about his returning "OT Massa Richard.?╟╓* This is, of course, a comedy classic with a switch ending.;/ y Even the waiters, I noted, stood still; 1 is te n e d ?╟÷ and laughed at Shawn?╟╓s sallies. When you can make the average night club waiter laugh?╟÷ boy, you gotta be good! New to this L. Q. revue is the Molidor Trio. Act centers around a boy contortionist who literally is twisted into knots by his two strong, pretty girl assistants. Held Over, Too (; New, too, are Harber and| Dale, ballroom dancers. He and | she offer the usual lifts and?½ spins, except the way they do | them the lifts seem liftier andj. the spins spinnier. Rest of the headliners have I been held over. For Donn Arden/ has his spectacular p?6ffiTctionb keyed up so it?╟╓s moving fast-/; faster-fastest. Those justly famed Latin 1 Quarter show girls presented k their usual show of beauty un-| v adorned. Marthe Errolle looked r nice and sang nicely; . Miss (\ Queti Clavijo still is the fastest 1 heel-clicker I ever heard; li?╟╓l| Gina Genardi was as cute as a! button (although I never saw u cute button). That girl in the shower, how-i ever?╟÷one Tanya Corlette?╟÷11 ra^e overrated. In baseball,! they really should send her to I the showers. On the other hand, the pro-J duction singer, John Juliano, j is a greatly improved performer, Now he?╟╓s the boy with the pentratiiig look. I cite him a comer. ?√ß 27 m j Marilyn Maxwell, Dave Barry Bow at Nightery Frank By DAVID BONGARD Se nnes?╟╓ Moulin trays a jazzy columnist callec Rotige has a new thrush ?╟÷Marilyn Maxweii^-who opened last night before a star-studded audience. With Miss Maxwell was Comic Dave Barry a home run hitter twice up at bat. Humor In the words of Barry, Miss Maxwell ?╟úhas something that will knock your eyes out?╟÷ her husband.?╟Ñ She?╟╓s a real looker on stage, and her natr urally pleasant personality shines over the footlights. Her opening gag was that ?╟úit?╟╓s wonderful to be back at the Moulin Rouge which I?╟╓ve never played before.?╟Ñ After that, she launched into a tune which goes like this: ?╟úI Like Everybody, t.ikp You.?╟Ñ This was followed by the standard and loud ?╟úThe Lady Is a Tramp.?╟Ñ Miss Maxwell then discussed the problem, ?╟úLove, What Is It??╟Ñ A Trifle Static Her two best contributions were an old-time movie number in which she plays a flaming siren of the silentj screen, Greta Green; and a, number in which she por-i something like ?╟úZip.?╟Ñ A sleepy lullaby rounder! out her material, which was a trifle too static to be' classed as good. The best crack of the evening was turned in by Barry: ?╟úTV is a wonderful medium for exposing talent.?╟Ñ The Donn Arden revue clicked alonSTBTall its customary pulchritude and opulence. The San Francisco ?╟úFrankie and Johnnie?╟Ñ number never loses its chatm. Maitre ?╟╓d Marcel had his hands full holding hack the crowd who arrived for the second show. j It was a glittering evening sh THE HOLLYWOOD SCENE By LOWELL E.
