DAILY MIRROR ftllG nuu New Latin Q. Show By FRANK QUINN ?╟úCome on along with me and visit gay Paree?╟Ñ is the opening line of the Latin Quarter's theme song. Though the invitation is limited, the new Donn Arden revue hop-skips all oyer the globe. | f ?╟úInternational Holidayr for I Love?╟Ñ is the appropriate titlefor [ the show which has visits * to [ Venice, Spain, New York, the | West Indies and even Heaven in 12 scenes. . | THE LATIN QUARTER offers r the town?╟╓s most glittering floor show display. In production 1 quality and variety of entertain-! ment it compares favorably with 1 a legitimate show and here there I is also dancing, food and drink. 1 There are a bevy of beauties I prancing about in as much of 3 exposed epidermis as the law al-1 lows, lavish displays of ornate 1 costume and unique features like 1 the rain curtain and huge bird I cages housing gals to be swung | out over the audience, J 1 Opening night - audience in-| eluded about 200 members of the 1 Dance Masters Assn., which 1 found the exciting dancing of i Gizelle and Francois Szony thrill-1 ing. We have seen them many 1 times and their work becomes I more brilliant with each appear-I ance. STARRING IS comedian Paul | Gilbert, a top favorite in the Hol-?║ lywood sector, who has appeared I in all the top cafes there and I in Las Vegas. : Paul has done || film stints and has shown on I the Sullivan and Allen TV pro- I grams. ?╟? ,. I He?╟╓s quick with the one-line 1 thrust, sings a fair song and is 8 agile with his feet. He opens 1 with a smart tux and closes with I bare feet arid nightshirt. He has a 1 stint that whips up howls, mainly I through a broad burlesque of NITELIFE TV?╟╓s ** Medic,?╟Ñ called ?╟úKnow Your Doctor,?╟Ñ and as a revival! preacher. Also starred is tiny Tina Robin, Rarely fiv?· feet but with a towering voice. Held over from the previous show are Queti Clavijo, Spanish dancer and. her Flamencos; Tahya CorlOtte; the girl in the shower; and singers. Martha Er-rolle, John Juliano and Gene Var-rone. Setting the beat for the show is the excellent Jo Lombardi orchestra, with the Buddy Har-lowe band alternating for the dancing. This Clipping From LOS ANGELES, CALIF. The versatile performer! who ;an do intricate dance routines and play various instruments, is a vital spark in DomiArdens lavish show at the noted night club. His appearances m motion pictures and on many topnotch TV* variety shows make him recognizably welcome to those who haven?╟╓t ever enjoyed his wacky antics at close range. Tina Robin, the diminuitive songstress who has garnered plaudits on'the entertainment circuit throughout the nation, is a Phasing added attraction: Could be that Tina will achieve one of the speediest rises on. the current theatrical scene. Include her-fastselling Carol Records in. And for those who appreciate the fihe type of terpsichore that I iS always evidenced by it is good to know that this brother and sister team is ?√ß stijl another addition to the general excellence at The Latin Quarter, j Popular in Summer The Tavern-On-The-Green, al-1 ways a delightful rendezvous for A dance and dine addicts* is even! I: more so, during the Summer sea-son. With Central Park (at 67th) ; ?╟≤ street) as its unbeatable location*! ; this restaurant has firmly en-, ; trenched itself in the hearts New Yorkers and transients alike, because of its modest tariff, breeze-cooled garden service, and high standards. This Clipping From VARIETY NEW YORK, N. Y. JUL 9 1958 f Latin Quarter, N. Y. E. M. Loew & Eddie RiSman I presentation of "International Holiday For Love/* with Kathryn Grayson, Jack Durant,. St. Leon I Troupe (8); Boh DeVoye Trio, Queti Clavijo (2), Gina Genardi, Ray Kyle, Tony Mack, Tanya Cor/ leit, Line; Jo Lombardi & Buddy Harlowe orchs; produced by Donn | Arden; $6 minimum. t. vFor this latest edition of ?╟úInterim national Holiday For Love,?╟Ñ Donn 1 Arden has built a fast and gim-1 micky show around headliner j Kathryn Grayson who balances j with her high notes some of the B low ones struck during the eve-% ning. Contrast doesn?╟╓t necessarily m benefit Miss Grayson, but it?╟╓s part it and parcel of the kind of lush, | richly costumed and ably executed 5 revue which has become the Latin j Quarter specialty. This isn't the ?╟╓place for sophisti-f8 cates who may come looking for; B ?╟úart?╟Ñ or even cleverness. It?╟╓s a j gp splashy, brash and eye-popping production and the customers (a I goodly percentage of them out-of-1 towners) eat it up. Acts, some of I them held over from the last ?╟úedi-||r tion,?╟Ñ are well balanced and vir-tually every one goes over to big gl mitting. ?√ß ;/ - J Line comes up with its usual' 1 standard and shapely attractions : and, as the piece de resistance, \ Arden has jets of water spurting I from ceiling to floor around the | stage (drenching close ringsiders gl In - the doing) as Tanya Corlett takes a shower onstage. Added | spectacular touch sees two girls J taking a ride in cages suspended : from the ceiling. Appearance of Miss Grayson is | / I a sudden switch from the splashy ill production values. Attractively vi gowned (though she explained to 1 the audience on opening night that m she had to go on despite the loss I of her music and costumes), she I offers a repertoire ranging from 9 ?╟úShimmy Like My Sister Kate?╟Ñ to grand opera. Miss Grayson hardly I ranks as a singer of stature, even J within the limits of a night club 1 act. Her voice is forced, almost | pamiully so, in the operatic arias PI which she performs with more conviction th^n feeling. Singer obviously feels that her voice is her act and so she doesn?╟╓t g| need anything else. Result is a w rather dull stance, though the // opening night audience, at least, ?║| received her uncritically and with d enthusiasm. ?╟úMy Fair Lady?╟Ñ num-;^ber leads into ?╟úSo In Love,?╟Ñ which X ; segues into Tosca, ?╟úHi Lili, Hi Lo,?╟Ñ ' jthe tame ?╟úMy Sister Kate?╟Ñ number and then a weepy rendition of a ?╟úMadame Butterfly?╟Ñ itria. Miss Grayson gets by on the strength of I ^personality, which is pleasing, but j ?√ßthere must be a better way to [ ' showcase the act, |g|| Comedian Jack Durant gets bill- j kj||ing as the extra added attraction ; 4 and he hits just the right, low note j for the room. He works hard and ! gets plenty of laughs, though some \ !||??f his material is in bad taste. I The St. Leon Troupe from Aus-illtralia (six men and two gals) reg- l listers with a strong, aero stint d which tends to become somewhat | f^repetitious, but features some sen-| : sational solo work; Bob DeVoye | is a definite crowd pleaser d^with its agile terp routines; Queti | Clavijo does her flamenco heel-1 and-toe drumming to appreciative ; ] mitting. Outstanding in several I numbers is Gina Genardi who has a fresh and vibrant personality and j is excellent in her solo numbers. 1 Ray Kyle is the featured singer 1 who, like Miss Genardi, gets the I support of the chorus. Joy Lom- | bardi skillfully batons the show 1 : from behind a white curtain. Bud- | dy Harlowe?╟╓s band takes over be-iween shows. d Hift.
