The entire cast ot 70 European artists have been conducting extensive rehearsals over the past two weeks in preparation for the opening of the third spectacular Lido production. Uma Atw* II fp DINAH SHORE, who has undoubtedly won more achievement awards than any other television personality in the business, is making one of her rare night club appearances in the Painted Desert Room at Wilbur Clark's Desert Inn for a special two- week plus two-day engagement. This appearance, is her fourth nightclub date in the past six years, Dinah elected NICK CASTLE to stage the act which includes six of the "EVEN DOZEN," the male singers and dancers who appear regularly on the Dinah Shore Chevy Show on NBC-TV. TICKER FREEMAN accompanies Miss Shore. Dinah's Las Vegas show is a capsule production of highlights of her lengthy and successful television career and has been the most looked-forward to appearance of any star in Las Vegas thus far in 1961. Appearing with the internationally famous singing personality, is "PROFESSOR BACKWARDS," one of the most entertaining comedians along the nightclub circuit. The DONN ARDEN DANCERS appear in a delightful production sequence with ART JACKSON, "singing master of informalities," and CARLTON HAYES conducts an augmented orchestra throughout Miss Shore's stay at the Inn. Give a listen to the very fine DON RAGON TRIO featuring an up and coming vocalist CORAL KENT in the Riviera Lounge nightly. A Most pleasant and entertaining group. ?╟÷ BILLY SNYDER, Dunes Hotel personality is THE BEST ARE ALWAYS IN THE SPOTLIGHT off on a good will tour of Ellay and Palm Springs to spread the Dunes gospel. A most competent man to do the job. ?╟÷ Attention: One of the hotels should grab up JOANNE ANGEL for their lounge. Her vocals are unique and her presentation is flawless. Call DU 4-6268, if you're interested. Still think for fine service and real good food it's the OLD RANCH SUPPER CLUB just North of Cashman's Field on Las Vegas Blvd. No. ?╟÷ The food is superb and the service great, try it and see what we mean. ?╟÷ FREDDIE BELL and the BELLBOYS are stirring up a storm in the Sahara Lounge along with the very wonderful CAB- ALLEROS who have practically become an institution there. LEWIS & SANCHEZ closed a 17 week engagement at HOWARD MANOR in Palm Springs and opened the SANDS HOTEL in San Diego Feb. 3rd. ?╟÷ TONY di MILO pencil-carding that he is to do a "flicker" at Warner Bros. GOOD LUCK, Tony. Songs as only JOHNNIE RAY can sing them in the Minsky Production at the Dunes are: When You're Smiling, Shake A Hand, Walking My Baby BacK Home, If I Had You, Love, As Time Goes By, Such A Night, A Hundred Years From Today, Cry, Jubilee and (Whiskey & Gin and Little White Cloud That Cried) which were written by Mr. Johnnie Ray. These songs become classic with Johnnie Ray stylings. ?╟÷ See you subsequently. KEN Jimmy Durante Still Vigorous as Entertainer By DICK WILLIAMS Entertainment Editor LAS VEGAS?╟÷In a.day when entertainers such as Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra have become so laconic in their song delivery and swapping of private jokes that you're not sure whether you're attending a night club or a stag poker party, a hard-working old-timer such as Jimmy Durante stands out as conspicuously as the world's most famous Schnozzola. Durante is stomping about the stage of the Desert Inn here these, nights, slamming his crumpled hats on the floor, nuzzling chorus girls, razzing bandleader Carlton Hayes and ridiculing partner Sonny King with the verve of a 20-yeai- old. It's almost impossible to believe that this frail yet rugged little man will be 68 on Feb. 10. I hadn't seen Durante in several years, and coming back to him again was to discover anew the energy, planning and talent that the Schnoz puts into his hour-long show. The only new-generation entertainer I know who works as hard as Jimmy is Sammy Davis Jr. WILLIAMS I once asked Jimmy how he kept generating this surprising power. "Performers used to work harder," he said. "Back on Broadway in the old days dere wasn't one or two shows a night. Ya play a dance. Then ya do a number. Den a dance, den a number. Ya start at 11 o'clock and ya keep goin' till 6 in the mornin'." Sleep Gives Power to 'Locomote' All right, all right, but, that was 35 years ago, when Jimmy was a kid. But how does he do it now? "Sleep," he confided. "If I get enough sleep, den I have the power to locomote, ma boy." Since I last saw Durante he has added Sonny King, a handsome, husky young bruiser with a fine voice,* to the act. I originally ran across Sonny some years ago up in the Catskills one summer on a Martin and Lewis junket. This was the historic weekend when the boys decided to bust up and Dean failed to show for the party. Sonny, who was weekending at Brown's Hotel, pitched in with no advance .notice and did a superlative job pinch- hitting as Jerry's partner. In the Durante show he is the butt of many of the Schnoz's barbs. "Wait until I call you in," roars Durante as King prepares to march out from the wings. Then when he does dart forth, Jimmy shoves him away from the mike with a bellowed warning: "Ya don^t coma direct to the microphone until ya been with Durante 20 years." Eddie Jackson, original member of the long-time act of Clayton, Jackson and Durante, is also back, after DURANTE Stomping, nuzzling. Jimmy and he patched up a rift which took the veteran song-and-dance man out on his own for a year. Eddie and Jimmy had been hoofing together for 43 years when they temporarily broke up in 1958 over some silly imagined slight. Customarily, anyone who establishes himself with Jimmy is in the act for life. Drummer Jack Roth, over whose bald pate Jimmy periodically lets fly a flurry of music pages, has been with the Schnoz for 40 years. Pert and Pretty One of the supporting acts is pert, pretty Betsy Duncan. What a difference a couple of years' experience makes! Now poised and self-assured, she is scarcely recognizable as the feeble-voiced little red-haired miss who broke in at the Slate Bros, club in L.A. a few years ago. Donn Arden, with his curvy chorines dancing an expectant mother's routine again, demonstrates that he is still the most original chore " ographer in Vegas. ^^w
