This gave her the opportunity to compete in the "Miss USA" beauty pageant held at Miami Beach where she earned the second runner-up position in the big Florida event that was nationally telecast on CBS. Competition was so keen that Dean Martin, who presented Kathy with her preliminary "Miss Nevada" trophy later said, "The 'Miss USA' girls were all so beautiful that the winner finished third!" Probably no girl in the contest had to overcome the peculiar obstacles that Kathy faced. She had to instantly undergo a complete turn-about in her normal living schedule. For example, in Las Vegas she would normally go to bed a couple of hours after finishing her midnight show, usually about 4 a.m. But when it was 4 a.m. Pacific Time in Las Vegas, it was 7 a.m. Eastern Standard Time in Miami, and this was the hour she had to get ready to attend pageant rehearsals! To adjust her internal "clock" she simply gave up one night's sleep. But the biggest natural obstacle for anyone who lives in arid desert climate is Florida's high humidity. Instead of the comfortable 10 degree dryness of Las Vegas, Kathy waded into the 90 degree swelter of sub-tropical Miami. It apparently did not bother her too much. She finished higher than any girl in Nevada's history.
