    1-9-52 (Rev. 4/22/82) ACT I Scene 9 SETTING: The yard of the church.v The social: late afternoon. Upstage are two long tables piled with food. AT RISE: The BRIDES and SUITORS are dancing, watched by all the townsfolk. The scrim goes up. The six BROTHERS ENTER STAGE RIGHT, carrying pies ' that mtt.t.v prepared for the social. They stop, not knowing what to do. The local SUITORS notice the BROTHERS and begin to bristle at the invasion of their territory. THEY gradually stop dancing, leave their girls, and group down center ?╟÷ almost squaring off opposite the BROTHERS. The BRIDES, curious, cross and group down left. DORCAS (breathless) Don't recall ever seeing those men before. LIZA (wide-eyed) They're strangers to me. RUTH (ecstatic) Six of them! MARTHA And all as tall as church steeples! LIZA Alice, which one do you like? ALICE The one with the red hair. (mtt.t.v enters, followed by ADAM. She instantly notices the tension between the two groups of men.) MILLY (breaking the tension; gaily) I'm so happy to see all of you.
