I. CALL TO ORDER SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA calls the meeting to order at 6:02 II. PUBLIC COMMENT ANITA STOCKBOWER: Hand outs and presentation. i CSUN SENATE MEETING 35-11 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2005 MSU 201, 6:00PM ( PAULINE SERRANO: I am here to let you know that I want the open senate seat. THURITHABHANI SENEVERATNE: I'm also running and I'm looking forward to working with you all. MATTHEW LACARRA: I'm also running. I have lost my voice at all of our games. If you want to speak with me at all I'll be here afterwards. Former senator Ulip: This Wednesday is the Career Fair. I work with Pulte Homes. We are a future 500 company, and are looking for people like you guys. Passes out business cards. Michael Knight: I am an alumnus of UNLV. I came to you guys to talk about further report about professor Hoppe last semester. I want to go over my complaint. On March 4th, I was taking an econ course. He was talking about time preferences. He was going over different examples. He said a baby and an old person have a high time preference. Normal people our age should save our money. He then said that homosexuals have a higher time preference because they want to spend there money more then a heterosexual. During this whole time the students were laughing during this lecture. I was really offended by his remakes. On March 5th, I submitted letters to various people. I decided afterwards that this would be an informal complaint. The professor was contacted and told not to bring it up again. He did not take the complaint seriously. He was told again to not discuss this again. He presented a letter to me and the university saying that he did not think that he was wrong. I then made this a formal complaint on March 17th. Based on a later hearing, the university said that he was creating a hostile teaching environment. The grievance council found the same thing and he made a hostile classroom. He was then given a letter of reprimand. The professor thinks that this is freedom of speech but I do not. All charges were dropped after the professor went to the press. Passes out the reports about the Professor Hoppe. I came here today to discuss this with you further and for you to all have your own conclusions. I'm also asking that the senate come to a conclusion on this. VI. REPORTS A. Senate Committee Reports SENATOR ESPINOZA: Everyone in my committee, come meet with me after this meeting. SENATOR TEMPLETON: I posted my report on the yahoo groups. The Tunnel of Oppression is coming up. I put the rules and ethics reports on the yahoo groups. SENATOR CRAWFORD: Bylaws having a meeting Thursday at 7. B. Faculty Senate/University Committee Reports C. Business Manager Report 2 see attachment D. Liaison Reports i. Student Involvement Activities TOM STUDDARD: Labor of love this Saturday. March 16th festival community, Journey for hate free millennium on Monday the 14th at 6:00p. We are constructing the tunnel this week. Passes out a volunteer sheet. March 8 is the start of construction for Tunnel of Oppression. Pro-Greek life packets due today; one day extension if you need it. Greek Leadership Day March 14th at noon for the m. Conference housing conference assistance. Rebel achievement award due march 25th. We want everyone to submit them. We are collecting dates for the student handbooks and website. ii. Residence Hall Association SENATOR WASHINGTON: Sigma Gamma Rho will be doing a step off. We will be teaching the art of stepping and having a step show. iii. Student Athletics MATTHEW LACARRA: Saturday, we won the basketball. The baseball team is 2 and 8 and we won one game against Cal State Fullerton. Hopefully we will take the Basketball ( game tonight. iv. Student Health Advisory Committee v. ROTC COLINE LESTER: Last weekend we got up at five in the morning and went to Red Rock and did a road march. We had an easy week last week. This week we have color guards. Following normal schedule this week other then that. vi. Leadership Advisory Board SENATOR TEMPLETON: This week Tunnel of Oppression, they need a lot of help. This might be the last year that they do it. E. Rebel Yell Report SENATOR JOHNS: We are looking for a vice chair, so we are going to have a meeting this week. VII. EXECUTIVE BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS VICE PRESIDENT GOATZ: see tape 3 PRESIDENT SCHUCK: How many people checked your emails? For the ground breaking ceremony, they are doing an home improvement type of thing where they build you a new house. So I'm going to be playing the role of Tye. Part of the ground breaking they are doing this fake video of people breaking ground. They want to make it this huge student thing as the event is going on. SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: They don't want us there for the ground breaking? PRESIDENT SCHUCK: Yes, Sat at 1:00 pm we are doing this and we need at least 100 people there. This video will be at UNLV for years to come. It's everyone's fees going to use. There is going to be free lunch. Its casual attire, hats will be provided. Action Item: Approval of one (1) CSUN member to serve as a Justice for a term ending two (2) years from date of appointment. As submitted by the Executive Board. Action Item: Approval of sponsorship to the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers [SHPE] for an amount not to exceed $2000.00 for career fair and the SHPE Regional Leadership Conference. As submitted by Senator Huerta, Marazita, and Roth. See attachment 35.11.01 SENATOR ESPINOZA: From what budget? SENATOR FLORES: moves to approve SENATOR HUERTA seconds SENATOR HUERTA: yields floor to Victor Veia Victor Viea presents platform RAFEAL RIVIERA: We have submitted 3 times for the 500$. That has become a sticky point. I was thinking that we were going to get $3000 total. We are looking to extend the SHPE, we have other sponsors and resource. Our main resource is a fireworks stand. We have been able to grow with the money. Presents about item SENATOR ESPINOZA: So you want $3,000? RAFAEL RIVIERA: It was my initial understanding that we would get $500 from each senator and the $2,000. The conference is in LA. SENATOR ESPINOZA: How much is it? RAFAEL RIVIERA: $60 for early registration. 6 SENATOR ESPINOZA: You have to pay for it out of pocket first? To the senators that submitted this, I don't know where any of this money is going. Its sloppy how this done. SENATOR WASHINGTON: 50-70$ per senator. SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE MULLINAX: Who exactly goes to the conference? SENATOR HUERTA: Engineering students. SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE MULLINAX: The whole point of doing this was to go up to senators for money. SENATOR MOSES: Have you done any fundraising? RR: yes SENATOR MOSES: Is this a one time thing? RAFEAL RIVIERA: That's hard to answer. We ask anyone we can for assistance. We do do fundraising. SENATOR MOSES: So, the reason you are here is that you don't have enough money. ( RAFEAL RIVIERA: Yes. We are trying to get more A students from the schools of Nevada. SENATOR MOSES: Why didn't they get the money? VICE PRESIDENT GOATZ: They have been approved for the money but they haven't brought in there receipts. DAVE HILL: They have there documents in the works. They are getting there $500. VICE PRESIDENT GOATZ: $2,000 won't go any faster then the $500.1 think it would be in bad taste to do this for them and then not do it for others that we have said no to. I think we should also know where the money is going go. I think we should table this until we have something on paper for where the money is going. SENATOR BOWERS: I didn't catch something, has this event happened or going to happen? RAFAEL RIVIERA: Some of the things have happened, and we are trying to plan more events. The Tech conference is $200 plus airfare per person. Initially I hoped it would replenish some of our funds. We have to do creative bookkeeping to do some of these things. 7 SENATOR BOWERS: how many members are on campus? RAFEAL RIVIERA: More then 70, we also have students in the ambassador program. SENATOR BOWERS: So is this even going to go to the conference since you are just replenishing the funds? As submitted by Senator Crawford. XII. EXECUTIVE BOARD SUMMATIONS VICE PRESIDENT GOATZ: nothing SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE MULLINAX: I would like to see a better overall level of professionalism. As far as the item goes, if you had the homework done you would have a lot more help. When talking to each other, please try to be more 8 respectful to people around you. Maybe if we are all dressed up we will be more respectful to each other. SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: Stockbowers proposal: that was for students, for example I went and they sent me to do some tests and now I know I have dyscalculia. If anyone is looking to sponsor her let me know so she can come back. Now she is looking to us to fund. Michael Knight, I hope you all listened and that professor is still here. He invited me to the informal hearing. They did find him guilty of all those things. I'm baffled that they would charge him and finding him wrong then. I was talking to PRESIDENT SCHUCK when it is going to be mixed with biased info and that aren't facts. He looked at anti homosexual places for his info. I think that is wrong that the University would drop the ball on this when they get a little bit of legal heat. The Stan Fullerton game, I get there at the seventh imiing. We won against the champs. There are a lot of games on Saturdays and Sundays. Tunnel of Oppression, go to it now this might be the last one. The issues that they are having for it, they don't have enough issues to do it on. I thought it was a good meeting and efficient. The consent agenda worked well. SENATOR GABRIEL: Were we committing both C and D SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: It was either refer or commit, which is basically the same thing. SENATOR GABRIEL: so it is already committed? SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: It goes to them and then it comes back to us. XIII. GOOD OF THE SENATE SENATOR FLORES: Have a good week. SENATOR JIMENEZ: Going to game at 9:00pm SENATOR MOSES: Going to the game, everything went well except for the sloppiness of the SHPE thing. SENATOR MACK: I want to apologize for coming in late because of a class I have to take. I would have backed some of the things that I was late for. The rules and ethics committee, it was an embarrassment; the meeting was ran very poorly. I ear that something drastic could happen and go to the rules and ethics meeting. I hope that some thing change and that there will be some more order. SENATOR BOWERS: With the knight thing I do applaud him for coming up here but I don't see the relevance in him coming to our meeting. SENATOR MACK and I are bring an item that is like the other item. The career fair is on Wednesday, get in there and meet the people. Talk to everyone you can there. Email me with any questions. 9 SENATOR WONG: Make sure to put up the posters in your boxes. I think that UNLV made the right decisions. As far as the SHPE, we should have been more organized. If I had not misunderstood the line iteming, I would have been able to help more with this. They do a lot of things for thins university. We did discuss this before hand. SENATOR CRAWFORD: The bone marrow thing will also be tomorrow. We got 63 today with over 50% minorities. Hopefully we will catch more people tomorrow. It takes like five minutes. Keep it up and tell all your friends about it. For the constitutional revisions, ill try to put my comments on the yahoo groups. SENATOR ESPINOZA: I was helping out a lot with the bone marrow. The SHPE, I hope you don't take it as a personal attack. If we all stand behind this, then we might have some power with the knight thing. The new football coach is going to be at the game. Just be at the game. SENATOR TEMPLETON: I can understand the thing with Knight. It can be frustrating when you have something that you put so much time in and then have it shot down. With the rules and ethics, I think that SENATOR MACK is more comfortable to be over there and complain after PRESIDENT SCHUCK dropped the charge. I think that Mullinax had a point that we have to raise the standard of treating each other better. I think that I did my job very well. Have a great week. SENATOR GABRIEL: I want to apologize for not being at all of the previous meetings SENATOR JOHNS: I used to work with Pulte homes. President makes like 3.2 million a year. They didn't think that UNLV was a quality enough of a school, so they went to other schools that they thought were better. I don't think that the SHPE guy was treated SENATOR GONZALEZ: Good luck to all the people that are running this week. Civil rights is still an issue today Knight throw it in our face today. I don't think a teacher should be teaching from focus on the family. It doesn't make any sense for where he got all his sources from. We have to be pro active about this. Everyone has the power to talk about this. I can't wait till Rebelpalooza. SENATOR PIRO: It's offensive to me that that professor has the right to teach here. For our first rules and ethic meeting that handled and article that it did. There are a lot of people who don't think I can ever be mean. I think the meeting could have been done better but I think you are biased. It is a learning experience for everyone who was apart of this. Say what you have to say about someone behind closed doors. As far as the hip hop show, there are going to be some dissention behind it. I guarantee we will make money on this. I'm going to go watch basketball. XIV.
