As submitted by Senator Sumner on behalf of CSUN Services Director Ea Madrigal. SENATOR DEARMAS: move to approve SENATOR FRIEDLIEB 2nds SENATOR DONNELLY arrives at 6:36pm SENATOR CAZARES: what was the discussion in regards to this item in e board? PRESIDENT SCHUCK: the issue is that we think we're setting a bad precedent by letting the director be able to ..the management power is put in the hands of the e-board. You take the whole chunk of that power away from us if you let.. .because somebody doesn't like a decision we make on something. If they say okay that's fine but I don't like it so I'll go to senate about it, then it sents a bad precedent. I agree. Director Madrigal, I understand she needs assistance, but I've assisted every director and assistant director. If the argument is to assist the directors, I promise you they have a support system. If that's the only argument, I'm here. I quit my job, so I could be here. I'm here to assist them, I have in the past, and I'll continue to do it. SENATOR CAZARES: can we ask the applicant questions? KORIE BRUST: speaks. SENATOR CAZARES: as you already know Director Madrigal is in probationary period, how do you think you can help to get to par with what you have to... KORIE BRUST: the position's available, so obviously there's a need for it. I've been shadowing Ea, I know the organization's packet, I've helped out with organization fair, .. .I'll be able to help her in any way she needs. SENATOR CAZARES: from what you've seen, do you think she needs help? brust: she's over a lot of organizations, with a lot of people. It's a lot of responsibility. SENATOR MAYER: how many classes do you take? How many hours do you work? KORIE BRUST: 16 credits. I work 3-4 days, for that many hours. 7 SENATOR MAYER: I've never seen an e-board have this much opposition to having an assistant. I don't understand why we're so adamantly opposed? PRESIDENT SCHUCK: if you set this timetable so that it ends when probation ends, then I don't have an issue. This is a director that's moving toward dismissal. My fear is you'll approve an assistant and wnen we have to reelect, the new director will have an assistant that they didn't have a choice in. We're approving someone who wasn't picked by their supervisor. It creates a horrible management practice. If they don't like it, they'll just come to you. SENATOR MAYER: I don't think eboard should be taken out of the equation. SENATOR MACK: I think what SENATOR MAYER is sayng is logical, but I had the pleasure and great opportunity to work with Korie and Ea and they did a fantastic job. It's only logical to let her to be the director. They work well as a team together. I don't think it's unreasonable. SENATOR FRIEDLIEB: I call to question SENATOR DEARMAS 2nds SENATOR FRIEDLIEB, SENATOR DEARMAS, SENATOR TEMPLETON, SENATOR CAZARES in favor SENATE PRESIDENT PRO-TEMPORE CIANCI, SENATOR MAYER SENATOR CORPUZ, SENATOR SANTIAGO, SENATOR SUMNER, SENATOR HUERTA, SENATOR ZANDERS, SENATOR CRAWFORD, SENATOR MULLINAX, SENATOR DONNELLY, SENATOR JIMENEZ, SENATOR ESPINOZA oppose 12-4-0 Motion FAILS SENATOR SUMNER: best thing is until end of Ea's term. Move to amend action item striking april 30 2005 and inserting until the end of Director Madrigal's probationary period. SENATE PRESIDENT PRO-TEMPORE CIANCI 2nds SENATOR FRIEDLIEB: why don't we make it until the end of Ea's term? SENATOR SUMNER: until end of Director Madrigal's term. SENATE PRESIDENT PRO-TEMPORE CIANCI 2nds 19-0-0 amendment PASSES unanimously 8 SENATOR MULLINAX: what's your job, PRESIDENT SCHUCK? PRESIDENT SCHUCK:... SENATOR MULLINAX: if you decide that you don't have time to help DIRECTOR MADRICAL, is that your fault? My point is if Schuck decides he has no time, then she needs an assistant.. .you have not set precedent for anything. I'm gald we've compromised and I hope Ea isn't working toward suspension.
