Learning Outcomes: • Students will meet other new students at welcoming events • Students will learn about programs and services available to them on campus • Students will be able to identify ways to get involved on campus • Students will interact with staff and faculty outside of the classroom • Students will feel a part of the UNLV community Welcome Week activities have been a part of the UNLV history for many years and this year will mark the 8th year of Premier UNLV. The Welcome Week program sets the tone for the semester and is the first chance for many students to understand what it means to be a Rebel. Welcome Week activities include: Welcome Tables: The first two days of school there are three welcome table locations across campus. The tables are staffed by knowledgeable staff and students who want to help students become a part of the UNLV community. At the welcome tables volunteers pass out bottles of water, student handbook planners, maps and other vital information for student success. Premier UNLV: Premier UNLV is the official kickoff event for the fall semester. Premier UNLV is designed to officially welcome new and returning students to campus, promote a sense of pride and connection to UNLV, and to build a tradition that will mark the beginning of every academic year. Greek Life hosts a Premier barbeque that is free for all students, live entertainers perform, 1,000 fight song t-shirts are distributed free to students, the marching band, cheerleaders and dance team perform, all of the athletic teams are introduced and the University President and Student Body President welcome students back to school. Experience UNLV Extravaganza: Traditionally there are have been a student organization fair and a campus information fair held on two separate days the second week of school. This year the Welcome Week committee has decided to make an exciting change. The two fairs will be combined to create an extravaganza that students will want to attend, rather than stumbling upon the events like in the past. There will be music, giveaways, informational sessions and a fun environment throughout the day in the student union. Community Service Project: The Welcome Week committee will be having a canned food drive as a part of the Welcome Week activities. Cans will be collected throughout the week at various locations across campus. Student Organization Fairs: In addition to the Experience UNLV Extravaganza two student organization fairs will be held to promote involvement and provide student organizations with an opportunity to recruit members. One fair will be held during orientation and the second will be held the second week of school on the Alumni Walk, a new location for student organization fairs. STUDENT AWARENESS AND INVOLVEMENT • The Welcome Week Committee is a part of the Rebel Pride Council and all activities are planned and implemented by a group of students. • All UNLV students are invited to attend all Welcome Week events • Welcome Week events will be marketed during orientation week and the first week of campus • Numerous types of marketing will be used to promote awareness of the Welcome Week activities, including: table tents, posters, emails, website updates, etc CSUN RECOGNITION • CSUN logo on Welcome Week poster, table tents and Experience UNLV Extravaganza printed materials • CSUN will have the opportunity to provide a banner to be displayed on the stage at Premier UNLV • CSUN members will have an opportunity to volunteer at all of the Welcome Week activities for additional CSUN exposure • CSUN will have the opportunity to provide a flyer or brochure to be passed out to students at the Welcome Tables during the first two days of school • Verbally recognize CSUN at events • Provide a great program to students!! CO-SPONSORSHIP The Rebel Pride Council Welcome Week Committee and the Department of Student Involvement and Activities request a co-sponsorship of $4,000 for the Welcome Week and Premier UNLV events. The co-sponsorship will be used as follows: • $2,000 will be used to purchase 400 additional fight song shirts which will allow us to almost double the amount of t-shirts passed out to students. Every year thousands of students line up before the t-shirt distribution at Premier UNLV so they have a chance to get a free Fight Song T-shirt and every year the 1,000 shirts are quickly passed out and students go home unhappy because they were not one of the lucky students who knew to get to the field early to get a shirt. • $500 will be used to purchase additional giveaways for the Welcome Week events. The giveaways will be used as incentives to encourage people to attend events. Giveaways will include: water bottles distributed at the welcome tables, flashlights distributed at Premier UNLV, Welcome Week t-shirts passed out during welcome tables, a book scholarship that will be given away at the Experience UNLV Extravaganza and numerous other prizes. • $1,500 will be used to offset the rising costs of the pyrotechnics and entertainment at Premier UNLV. We the Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada, represented in the CSUN Senate, do enact as follows: SENATE BYLAW 59 SENATE STIPEND (Effective: May 27, 1995; February 24, 1997; August 9, 1999) I. Purpose A. To provide Senators with a reasonable consideration for their effort. B. To more fully emphasize the accountability of Senators. C. To fully encourage direct involvement in the ongoing business of the CSUN Student Government. II. Definition A. The CSUN Senate Stipend (herein referred to as "Stipend") shall be a gift to Senators for their continued commitment to public service. As such, all or any part of the Stipend can be declined by a Senator. B. The Stipend shall also consist of a credit fee waiver of no less than 12 credits evenly split between Fall and Spring Semesters, and may be transferable to summer sessions, and a per meeting attended cash amount of [(fifty) $50.00] (thirty-five) $35.00. The fall semester will include the second and third summer semester will include the first summer session for purposes of using the credit fee waiver in the summer. Contingent upon the senator attending at least three quarters (3/4) of the meeting. The Fall C. Any raise in the Stipend must be approved by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the Senate in the session preceding the increase or decrease. No Senate shall be empowered to give themselves a Stipend increase. D. When quorum is not met, a per meeting Stipend will not be paid. If an emergency meeting is called due to the lack of quorum, all Senators in attendance at both meetings will receive a Stipend. E. All other emergency meetings will be treated as ordinary meetings for Stipend purposes. F. For the fee waiver portion of the Stipend, any Senator not completing an entire term shall be given a prorated fee waiver based on the percentage of the term completed. The Senate will vote by a majority to define the amount of fee waiver to be returned to CSUN on a case by case basis. Audited, dropped, or failed courses will not be covered by the fee waiver. If any of these occur, the Senator will be charged for the amount owed to CSUN, as fee waivers are processed before the semester begins. If these monies are not returned to CSUN then by the definition in the Regents handbook (refer to handbook for appropriate article) a registration hold and/or hold on graduation will be placed on the above mentioned student; G. The Senate President Pro- Tempore is exempt from this, as he/she already recieves a stipend and fee waiver; H. The amount declared by the Senate shall be budgeted in the CSUN budget each year; I. Senators are bound by Senate Bylaw 40; J. No part of this bylaw may be waived; it must be waived as a whole K. Senators will be held accountable to the rules established by the Rules and Ethics Committee of each session; L. The Rules and Ethics Committee shall be empowered to bring charges against Senators who fail to meet the above mentioned obligations; M. Penalties, including reduction of stipend, shall only be enforced by a two-thirds (2/3's) vote of the Senate. STUDENT DEVELOPMENT CENTER PROGRAM CO-SPONSORSHIP I. Purpose To establish an ongoing co-sponsorship with the Student Development Center that will aid in supporting the College Exploration Fair, which is used to help students learn and discover what each of UNLV's college degree programs have to offer. It also presents potential career opportunities once a particular degree has been attained, information on graduate degrees offered, and so forth. II. Structure A. Funding for this service shall be encumbered out of the CSUN 2702 Senate Discretionary account, line item STUDENT DEVELOPMENT, for the Fall 2003 semester. From May 2004 thereafter, funding for this co-sponsorship shall be factored into the annual CSUN budget by the incoming Executive Board; B. Budgeting for this service is $5,000.00 per academic year to be encumbered out of the CSUN 2702 Senate Discretionary account, line item STUDENT DEVELOPMENT; C. Marketing of the co-sponsorship shall be done by the Student Development Center. Senate Bill Of the 33rd Session INTRODUCED BY: Senators Flinner, Sunstrum, and Thompson Summary: This bill recognizes the CSUN practice of aiding the current UNLV/CSUN Preschool, and serves as a commitment to continue to support the project in the future. PRESCHOOL CO-SPONSORSHIP I. Purpose To establish an ongoing co-sponsorship with the preschool program on campus that will aid students through giving undergraduate students who have children participating in the program a discounted rate. The program benefits the preschool students, offers employment to undergraduate students, and serves as an outreach to the Las Vegas community. II. Structure A. Funding for this service shall be encumbered out of the CSUN 2702 account for the Fall 2003 semester. From May, 2004 thereafter, funding for this co-sponsorship shall be factored into the annual CSUN budget by the incoming Executive Board. B. Budgeting for this service is $50,000.00 per academic year to be encumbered out of the CSUN 2702 account. C. Marketing of the co-sponsorship shall be done by the Preschool Office in conjunction with the Office of Student Information. TO: Anne Hein, Director Student Development Center FR.: Paula Castillo Student Development Center RE.: Major Exploration Fair 2002 Evaluations and Report Attached you will find summaries of the Student and Staff/Volunteer Evaluations from the Otober 23, 2002 Major Exploration Fair. This was the 6th annual fair co-sponsored by the Student Development Center with funding from CSUN Student Government. This program was designed to bring campus personnel together for the very purpose of helping students with the decision-making process of choosing a major. A crowd of close to 400 attended this year's event, exactly 385 students signed in for the Fair. Of this number, 367 students (95%!!!) completed an evaluation of the event (Exhibit A). This amazingly high percentage of evaluations completed was due to the diligent work of our four volunteers who staffed the two evaluation tables. The enclosed summary indicates that approximately 85% of the students who attended the Fair felt more informed about majors/careers as a result of attending this event. Approximately 78% of the students who responded felt that the representative(s) at the college/dept. table(s) helped the student to clarify their major and career goals, 83% of the respondents felt the games made the event more interesting and interactive and 91% felt that this event is a good use of CSUN funds. The majority of comments and suggestions included on the student evaluations were very positive. There were 88 faculty/staff and student volunteers who helped with the event this year. Of this number, 43 (49%) completed the evaluations (Exhibit B). Of those responding, 79% thought that this event helped their department increase its contact with students on campus, 72% felt there was enough advertisement, activities and information to attract exploring students, and 95% felt the functions and activities were well organized. Again, the majority of comments and suggestions included on the staff evaluations were very positive. I've also included a budget breakdown (Exhibit C) of expenses for the Major Exploration Fair and how it compared to the budget from last year's event. Based on the analysis of the student and staff/volunteer evaluations, this event was well perceived on campus and the vast majority of those involved feel that the resources invested on this event be continued for next year. The majority of the criticisms were in relation to the advertising for the event. Many felt that not enough advertising was done to promote the event, something to work on for next year's event. Although we had a slight decrease in attendance numbers this year, it seemed to be very well attended and enjoyed by the many that did stop by. I would like to set a goal next year of reaching 500 student attendees, and I believe that with more time spent on advertising, we could very well accomplish this goal. Finally, I've included a brief summary of expenses, staff and student attendance for the past six years (since inception) of the Major Exploration Fair. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Student government (CSUN) recognizes the Rebel Yell newspaper as an independent publication. The purpose of the Rebel Yell newspaper has been established to maintain an atmosphere of free and responsible journalism. The University and Community College System of Nevada Board of Regents, as the recognizer of the Rebel Yell newspaper bears the responsibility of the paper. Therefore, the University and Community College System of Nevada manages the day-to-day operation of the Rebel yell through the President of the university, who delegates responsibility to the student editors of the Rebel Yell newspaper. Furthermore, it is understood that the responsibility of this student newspaper shall be governed by the canons of responsible journalism. Let it be further known and stated here [that in each issue of the Rebel Yell newspaper] that in each issue of the Rebel Yell student newspaper that the opinions expressed by it writers and/or the paper are not necessarily those of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the student body, or the Board of Directors. The Rebel Yell newspaper shall be governed by the Rebel yell Advisory Board of Directors hereafter referred to as the Board. The Board shall oversee the newspaper's operations. The paper shall perform its duties within the policies set forth by the Board. II. The Rebel Yell Advisory Board shall consist of the following voting members: > Five (5) undergraduate students from the CSUN membership, not affiliated with CSUN student government or the Rebel Yell newspaper; > One (1) CSUN Senator; > Two (2) outside news media professionals; > One (1) faculty staff member from the University News and Publications Office; > One (1) Rebel Yell representative (to be selected by the Rebel Yell Editor-in- Chief); > One (1) faculty member from the Greenspun School of Communication. The undergraduate student advisory board members are to be elected by the CSUN membership during the CSUN Executive Board Elections each spring. The CSUN Senator shall be chosen by the members of the CSUN Senate.
