I want to allow interaction between colleges. Important to have interaction between the colleges. Our society would be enhanced with more participation. I want to set up programs and internships for more students in the liberal arts college. SENATOR HOMAMPOUR: Have you read the CSUN Constitution? Candidate Buchnan: Yes SENATOR DAYANI: What are your goals you want to change? Candidate Buchanan: More internships and job mentoring. More for students to do in the liberal arts college. SENATOR BOWERS: Do you have any specific course of action? How will you meet your goals? Candidate Buchnan explained her course of action No more questions Candidate Michael DeMarco. Passed out handout. I am a double major in English and Hotel Administration. I want a suggestion box in the advising center about questions concerning how things can be run better. Also, I want to have a room set up in WRI once a week for liberal arts senators to interact with students. Also, more chances for internships. SENATOR HOMPAOUR: What are issues that students face today? Candidate DeMarco: Diversity. Majors such as law and English. The growing population is spreading. SENATOR Homampour: Are you aware of what a student senator is able to accomplish? Candidate DeMarco: I have read bylaws sand constitution. What do you want to know? SENATOR HOIMAMPOUR: about the advising center. Candidate DeMarco: The WRI will be a place for students to go and have questions answered SENATOR GEFFEN: Can the organizations you are in help promote the liberal arts college? Do you have time? Candidate DeMarco: Yes. I have time management in my schedule. I balance work and school SENATE PRO TEMPORE MORADKHAN: What can you bring to student government? Candidate DeMarco: I take more classes than the usual student. IM a junior (only 19). I understand the ability to get out quick, but student involvement is helping me to understand society today. You need to. No more questions Candidate Rocco Gonalez: I am a sophomore at unlv. My main goals are for more people to be aware of this college. We have a great liberal arts college on campus. More internships for students. After graduating with a college degree, many students do not know where they want to go. SENATOR LING: how do you plan on getting more internships? Candidate Rocco: Working with the community. Getting our name at there. SENATOR DAYANI; In the application it says you have had experience in CSUN. Explain. Candidate Rocco: I am on the board with Director Jen Hale. Recognize the clubs and organizations on campus SENATOR GEFFEN: Do you know the majors in your college? Candidate Rocco: Yes, I want all majors to be equally represented. SENATOR HUGHES: what community service projects are you planning on bringing? Candidate Rocco: I haven't thought about it yet. I will post flyers and give students their options. I have done community service in Latino Soul Club. SENATOR HOAMAMPOUR: what do you think students don't see in the liberal arts college? Candidate Rocco: We (unlv) are more directed towards business and hotel. We need to allow others to see what the liberal arts has to offer. SENATOR HOMAMPOUR: Do you think unifying the majors is necessary:? And why? Candidate Rocco: The diversity of majors in the college is a problem. It would make our college more stronger. SENATOR FLEMING: have you been involved in the career fair? Candidate Rocco: Yes. SENATOR FLEMING Do you have a job? Rocco? No, only school full time. SENATOR DAYANI have you read the bylaws? My understanding is that Alpha Kappa Psi is a professional business fraternity. What leadership roles have you had? Candidate Rocco. I own my own business in Chicago, and I wanted a backbone in business. I wanted to see how things are run. My leadership roles in SOUL is historian and I was the alumni secretary in AKPsi. No more questions Candidate Wendy McCoy speaks. Her goals are simple. I want to unify the UNLV campus. I know a lot of students on campus. I don't feel that this campus is very safe at night. SENATE PRO TEMPORE MORADKHAN: We have a student government student and awareness safety committee. Candidate McCoy: I don't believe it's very effective. Students walking at night to their car is not safe. SENATOR HOMAMPOUR: Are you interested in serving on that committee? SENATOR McCoy: Yes Candidate Naomi Rausehenberger: Not present SENATOR BOWERS: I move to allow discussion on the candidates seconded by SENATOR FLEMING All in favor (19-0-0) Motion passes SENATOR BOWERS: (to the liberal arts senators) Do these candidates actually have issues for the liberal arts college? SENATOR HOMAMPOUR: I have talked to the dean, and there are a lot of issues with the diversity of majors, but I don't see a lot of cross conflict, unless you are a dual major. With the advising center, the senators can only assist. We have no power. I don't believe the WRI room would help any. With Candidate Bunchahan, the political science college is hard to get internships. All internships are done with the professors. We can not create internships. There is no way to coincide the two. I like the idea of campus safety. I do not see diversity as a big problem with the college. SENATOR MORADKHAKHAN asked Candidate DeMarco what the box was for? CANDIDATE DEMARCO: said it was to implement a survey. The suggestion box will be for the students. SENATOR DAYANII think that all of us don't know what we are doing when we first start out when senators. We shouldn't hold that against the candidates. SENATOR BOWERS asked SENATE PRESIDENT DAVY if these were the candidates that got more references checked? SENATE DAVY said CANDIATE DEMARCO was a good listener. SENATOR FAUSKE asked SENATOR HOMAMPOUR a question? Can you help these candidates along? SENATOR HOAMPOUR said SENATOR FLEMING and I have worked well together and I believe the new senator will work well with us also. SENATOR BOWERS moved to amended contract "see attachment" for amendments as seconded by SENATOR GEFFEN (17-0-4) SENATORS BOWLAND, DILORENZO, SALSSA, and MACDONALD abstain Amendment Passes SENATOR DILOREZNO: I have a few questions for Sean. Are we charging for this event? Director Sean Tree to students. $10-20 for nonstudents. SENATOR DILONREZO. See section 4.2 It lists certain things that unlv is providing. Where is the money coming from? Is it included in the $65,000 budget? Director Sean: No, it's the 4,000 from another budget. The $65,000 is all for PNJ. SENATOR DILORENZO; 4.3 publicity and 5.3 questions? Are both people responsible for advertising? We are responsible? Director Sean: We are responsible for on campus advertising. They are responsible for off campus. SENATOR DILOREANZO: What is 4.4 other? Director Sean: nothing? Business Manager Jim Moore: This contracted is adapted for CSUN usage. This is a fill in the blank contract. SENATOR HOMAMPOUR: McClehhan been working extremely hard on this. I feel confident with Sean. SENATOR POWELL: I have a question with section 5. 46. It does not specify a dollar value for the act. Director Sean McClehhan: It is too hard to specify the costs for a headliner act. It depends on the act itself. SENATOR POWELL it is my concern that we are paying $65,000 for acts we have no idea what we are purchasing. The language is very vague. We have no legal binding. . Business Manager Jim Moore: We have to approve these acts. Director Sean: It must be approved by the university SENATOR POWELL: Is PNJ only providing the acts? Is everything else is being provided by the university? DIRECTOR MCCLHEAN: It lists where the costs were coming from and how much it costs to have a good concert. SENATOR POWELL: What about the revenue and commission? DIRECTOR MCCLENHAN: We are only responsible for ticket sales. SENATOR LING: with contract law, it is understood. I see no need to change the contract. SEANTOR MACDONALD: After the 65,000 is allocated, and the 4,000 is left over, will we have enough to cover the concert? DIRECTOR MCLEHNAH: Yes. The $4,000 should be enough to cover the costs. SENATOR MARTINEZ: Tickets wouldn't be considered merchandise SENATOR HOAMMPOUR: explained inside and outside sales. SENATOR POWELL moved to amend, to read under ticket sells "all proceeds taken by the university" 4.2.1 second by SENATOR SALSAA. DIRECTOR MCLENAN: We are in control of the ticket sales. We take 100% revenue from the ticket sales. SENATOR HOMAMPOUR: SHOULD WE direct it to CSUN board of regents? JIM MOORE: Board of regents SENATOR FAUSKE: Can we say 100%. What about ticket sales? DIRECTOR McClenahan: said that would be another contract. No further discussion: Move into a vote (4-15-2) (SENATORS WOODOSN, FAUSKE, MACDONALD, FLEMING, GONZALES, HOMAMPOUR, DAYANI, GEFFEN, CHASIN, BOWLAND, HUGHES, MARTINEZ, AOKI, LING, BOWERS oppose) (SENATORS ZARDNT and WILLIAMS abstain) Motion fails Further discussion: none Move into a vote on the contract: (18-3-0) (SENATORS MACDONALD, SALSAA, POWELL oppose) Motion passes E. Discussion/Approval of increasing RebelPoolza budget by $ 700 to $69,000. Funds to be encumbered from CSUN 2702 Entertainment and Programming (discretionary) FY 00-01 Account. As submitted by Senator Bowers; SENATOR DAYANI moves to approve action item E, seconded by SENATOR HUGHES. SENATOR POWELL; How do we get this number? Director Sean explains Move into a vote (20-1-0) (SENATOR POWELL opposed) Motion carries F. Action Item. Discussion/Approval of amount not to exceed $450.00 for co-sponsorship with the Women's Center for the Interactive Dinner Theater. Costs to be encumbered from CSUN 2702 discretionary FY 00-01 account. As submitted by Senate Pro Tempore Moradkhan; SENATOR GEFFEN moves to approve seconded by SENATE PRO TEMPORE MORDKHAN. Discussion: SENATE PRO TEMPORE MORDKHAN: We have sponsored this the past two years. It is very beneficial. SENATOR POWELL: This is the second time? Can do they do their own fundraising? SENATE PRESIDENT DAVY: they are not a club. They are a department. This is the cost of renting the ballroom. They have to pay for it. They always provide us with recognition. SEANTOR DILORENZO: How much do we have in our discretionary? JIM MOORE said around $11,000 dollars SENATOR BOWERS: With only $11,000. We started with over $85,000. The fiscal year doesn't end until June 30th. This is a good program though. STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT MORDKAHN: We have another $11,000 in our budget. We will be distributing it to accounts shortly. SENATOR CHASIN: What is this? SENATE PRESIDENT DAVY: Its a skit against domestic violence. It is an interactive dinner. SENATOR DILORENZO: Do they have a participation? Sign up sheet? STUDENT PRESIDENT MORDKHAN: They only charge 5 dollars. SENATOR GEFFEN: It has grown over the years. A lot of students from the dorms attend. A great opportunity. Move into a vote All in favor (21-0-0) Motion carries G. Action Item. Discussion/Approval of Rules for the 31st session. As submitted by SENATOR DAYANI; SENATOR SALSAA moves to approve seconded by SENATOR HUGHES SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE MORADKHAN moves to strike rule 13 seconded by SENATOR SALSAA. SENATOR DAYANI we went through this already. You should know your college, not the one that has the senate seats open. SENATOR HOAMPOURI agree with SENATOR DAYANI. SENATOR POWELL: This rule is being enforced and it is ex posto facto. They should have been enforced before senators got their seats. These rules should be enforced in the 32nd session, not this one. It is not fair to enforce these rules now. SENATOR BOWERS: These are own rules to hold ourselves accountably. How do you know the issues if you aren't in the college? Every college has introductory level classes. SENATE MARITNEZ yields the floor to President Moradkhan. STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT MORDKAHN there are concerns with this issue. There are some colleges that do not have intro level classes such as health science college. You need to work on this and make it more structured. It is too vague. SENATE PRO TEMPORE MORDKHAN yields the floor to Jim Moore Jim Moore: Judicial review is not in a position to review this at the time SENATOR FAUSKE: This rule isn't here to attack any current senators. SENATOR DAYANI: These aren't my rules, these are the committees rules. The committee met, and the class has to be in your college. SENATOR ZARDNT: This rule is very problematic. We can't impose an ex-posto rule after the session has started. We are asking trouble from judicial councils. SENATOR HUGHES leaves at 7:50 PM (20 senators present) SENATOR WILLIAMS : I don't pretend to be a senator for the people if you aren't. If I was in the hotel college, and I transferred to health science college, then I would be a freshmen in the health science college. Look at Hilary Clinton. A real life example. SENATOR POWELL: This will cause problems. Where do you draw the line? There are Monday evening senators. SENATOR DAYANI: The rules should have been submitted in November. Same time as last year. I don't see the issue at this time. Every session makes their own rules. It is immoral and unrepsonsible to be taking no classes in your college. SENATOR LING: These are the rules for us. We need to set our standards high. It's late, but better late than never. Open the catalog and see what college has what classes. SENATOR CHASIN: When this was brought to my attention, I thought it was for people who are running, not for the current senators. Some colleges aren't that strict. Move into a vote on striking rule 13 (7-13-0) (SENATORS WOODOSN, FAUSKE, MACDONALD, FLEMING, GONZALES, HOMAMPOUR, DAYANI, GEFFEN, BOWLAND, AOKI, DILORENZO, BOWERS, LING) MOTION FAILS SEANTOR WILLAIMS moves to insert "no cell phones during SENATE meeting" seconded by SENATOR HOMAMPOUR SENATOR HOMAMPOUR: In my social organization, we had this problem. It adds distraction and is distributive. SENATE PRESIDENT DAVY: I can add this to policy. SENATOR GEFFEN: This should be a policy. SENATOR BOWERS: Don't answer your phone. If it rings, then it is ok. We have all forgotten to turn it off. Move into a vote (2-16-2) (SENATORS HOMAMPOUR and WILLIAMS are for) (SENATORS SALSAA and BOWLAND abstain) Motion fails SENATOR DAYANI on line 13 add "during the previous year" and strike "unless" seconded by SENATOR HOMAMPOUR SENATOR DAYANI: This passed two weeks ago SENATOR POWELL: How do freshmen serve their senators? SENATOR DAYANI: At least one class or currently enrolled. SENATOR HOMAMPOUR; I agree with DAYANI. You can still take 101 classes SENATOR LING: This goes along with rule 1. SENATOR ZARDNT there are only two introductory level classes, and they fill up before freshmen can register. We are excluding people who would be excellent senators SENATOR FAUSKE: You should allow people with more seniority to be senators. It should be specific students SENATOR GEFFEN yields the floor to STUDENT BODY PAUL MORDKHAN MORKDKHKAN: Define year. SENATOR DAYANI moves to strike "calendar year" and insert" academic year" seconded by SENATOR HOMAMPOUR SEANTOR DAYANI: Academic year gives more opportunity than calendar year. SENATOR DILONREZO: Read the amendment please. SENATOR DAYANI: reads the amendment. SENATOR MARTINEZ: Are we able to check classes? (to Jim Moore) JIM MOORE: I can see all your grades. SENATOR ZARDNT: Are you going to uphold students who transfer, i.e. Reno to UNLV, are they going to be held accountability? SENATE PRESIDENT DAVY: Thy need to take a class at unlv. SENATOR HOMAMPOUR: Unless you specify UNLV, it wont matter. Move into a vote (14-5-1) (SENATORS WILLIAMS, CHASIN, ZARDNT, POWELL, SALSAA oppose) (SENATOR MARTINEZ abstains) Motion passes SENATOR DAYANI moves to amend rule number 13 to add " UNLV'' in between college and during seconded by SENATOR HOMAMPOUR Move into a vote (14-3-3) (SENATOSR WILLIAMS, ZARDNT, CHASIN oppose) (SENATORS DILORENZO, AOKI, MARTINEZ abstain) Motion carries SENATOR DILONEZO moved to amend number 11 to read " rules to be enforced following the semester" seconded by SENATOR POWELL SENATOR BOWER: This is in the bylaws. The bylaws supersedes the rules. SENATOR POWEL: This proves my point. Imagine when you try to enforce this. This redundant. SENATOR ZARDNT. It is irresponsible to pass a rule that can't be enforced. SENATOR MARTINEZ: These rules are for the whole session. Would this apply to the fall? SENATE PRESIDENT DAVY: For the first two weeks of fall they would. SENATOR DAYANI : Are we discussing the amendment? SENATE PRESIDENT DAVY said yes? SENATOR DILORENZO: Where is this in the bylaws? SENATOR DAYANI: Remember the info session? SENATOR HOMAMPOUR: reads bylaw 27. SENATOR DILORENO: Where does it say two weeks? SENATE PRESIDENT DAVY: We are still in the first month. The bylaw says the first month. The rales will further clarify the rules Move into a vote (7-12-1) (SENATORS WOODSON, FAUSKE, MACDONALD, FLEMING, GONAZLES, HOMAMPOUR, DAYANI, GEFFEN, MARTINEZ, POWELL, LING, MORDAKHAN oppose) (SENATOR BOWLAND abstains) MOTION FAILS SENATOR POWELL: Try to make an amendment for the 32nd session SENATE PRESIDENT DAVY; You can not make rules for the 32nd session. You are making further rules above and beyond what the bylaws say. SENATOR BOWERS: Look at bylaw 31 which explains rules being passed for the current senate. Move into a vote on item as a whole: (14-6-0) (SENATORS CHASIN, ZARDNT, WILLIANMS, DILORENZO, POWELL, SALSAA oppose) MOTION PASSES VII. PUBLIC COMMENT ({in accordance with N.R.S. 241.020 (2)(c )(3)} WILL PRICE: UNLV President for 98-99. You are working hard. Pleasure being here IX.
