CALL TO ORDER: SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH called Senate Meeting 28-35 to order at 6:04 p.m. He called a recess. SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH called the meeting back to order in MSU 202 at 6:06. SENATOR AUGUSTIN made a motion to amend the agenda to strike "201" and insert "202", seconded by SENATOR CARTWRIGHT. II. Move into a vote. Motion passes 18-0-0. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Motion to approve minutes 28-29 made by SENATOR CARTWRIGHT, seconded by SENATOR HEMINGTON. Move into a vote. Motion passes 17-0-1. (SENATOR DAVY abstained.) IV. ANNOUNCEMENTS: V. BOARD AND COMMITTEE REPORTS: A. Senate Committee Reports: B. Faculty Senate/University Committee Reports: 1. SENATOR FISK stated that the Dean search for Education met today. They are meeting next Monday at 7:00. 2. SENATOR GARCIA stated that the Curriculum Committee is meeting on November 2nd in CBC B201. C. Director Reports: 1. NEVADA STUDENT AFFAIRS DIRECTOR DALEY stated that alot of people seem to have concerns about his job. He stated that despite his political views, his goal is to bring politics to the students. He has spoken to various people, but the Republicans have failed to take advantage of him as a resource. A solution to the problem would be to deny the Democrats further access. He asked for input and assistance from the Senate. The District 1 debate between Chairez and Berkley is on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in CBC A112. There were several questions and comments from the Senators. 2. ELECTIONS BOARD DIRECTOR RAMIREZ was not present. VICE PRESIDENT CECI stated that the Homecoming refunds will take 2 to 3 weeks and said to ask Angela about them. Meetings will resume two weeks from today. 3. ORGANIZATIONS BOARD DIRECTOR AY ALA was not present. VICE PRESIDENT CECI stated that the O-Board voted last week to add a make-up 2 SENATE MINUTES 28-35/ October 26, 1998 Saturday meeting each month and they are working on ticket distribution dates for basketball. There were several questions from the Senators. 4. ENTERTAINMENT & PROGRAMMING DIRECTOR JOHNS thanked the Senate for their support. He stated that his goal for the position was to bring diverse programming to everyone, but it has been a difficult task. He reviewed some of the events so far: rock the vote, tailgates, and noonscenes. Coming up this month is Midterm Madness, the premier of Velvet Goldmine, and Swing Night. He thanked everyone that helped set up the Rebel balloon. He has the results thus far from the surveys that 84 students have turned in. SENATOR KAWAZOE arrived at 6:19. 5. OFFICE OF STUDENT INFORMATION DIRECTOR DE LA FONTAINE apologized for her absence last week. She thanked everyone for their help on the blood drive. She thanked SENATOR JORY and other Senators as well as DIRECTORS DALEY, RAMIREZ, JOHNS, and FLEISHMAN for their help. She thanked the Senators who put up the posters from their boxes and stated that she will stress the importance of putting up posters to the new Senators in the beginning of their term. She wished everyone good luck. There were several questions and comments from the Senators. 6. STUDENT SERVICES DIRECTOR FLEISHMAN stated that she will submit the operating policy after the first meeting of the new Senate. The desks have arrived and are in the annexes and they will be equipped on Tuesday. There were questions from the Senators. D. Residence Hall Liaison Report: Trung Fung stated that their movie night was successful. They are having a Halloween party for the residents. SENATOR ZARANTI enters at 6:27. E. Student Athlete Advisory Board Liaison Report: The liaison stated that the volleyball team had their first 2 losses this weekend. F. Ethnic Student Council Liaison Report: 3 SENATE MINUTES 28-35/ October 26, 1998 Ann Yu stated that this is Native American Heritage month and they are holding diversity training workshops. G. Business Manager Report: BUSINESS MANAGER JIM MOORE read the expenditures for the last week: $234.48 for office paper and $85.74 to repair the cart. He also stated that E-docs should be ready by Wednesday. The carpet will be installed this week and we need to move things out of the way by 5:00 tomorrow. PUBLIC COMMENT 9 SENATE MINUTES 28-35/ October 26, 1998 Leia Fleishman stated that she is sorry the Senators are leaving. She wants CSUN alumni to keep in touch and asked everyone to get in touch with her. She also told SENATOR TRUJILLO that it has been great working with him and she will miss him. Terry Moore stated that all of the Senators did a great job and they were a good Senate. He also commended SENATOR TRUJILLO. SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH called a 5 minute recess at 7:26. SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH called the meeting back to order at 7:34. IX. EXECUTIVE BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SUMMATIONS VICE PRESIDENT CECI stated that he is working with Kathy Zumbro from the Thomas and Mack about ticket distribution. They have been working on the websight. He has been doing the Director evaluations and will have them done by the end of the week. He is glad the resolution didn't pass. He thanked SENATOR TRUJILLO for all of his help. STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT PRICE stated that the Executive Board is looking into some type of websight feedback. Tomorrow is Midterm Madness and he, SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH, and DIRECTOR JOHNS will be in the dunk tank. The signs are up for Take Back the Night. There is a fan jam tomorrow night for the Rebel basketball teams and you get 20% off at the Rebel store. Next week is commuter appreciation week. SENATOR TRUJILLO was crowned as a Greek God. There is a KUNV meeting on Wednesday at 9:00. He met the Reverend Jesse Jackson last week. There are Judicial Council interviews this week. Happy birthday to SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH. He has football tickets for the game this weekend. It has been an honor working with the Senators who are leaving. (He read a quote.) SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH stated that he has a special request for those Senators who are leaving. He stated that Student Government is not always a positive experience. But he hopes that when they leave they have enough respect for it to remember that they are all friends. And the things that they say publicly take the rest of them down. So be gentle in your comments because people will be listening, and he has heard alot of things. He considers all of them his friends and has enjoyed working with all of them. He will pick up the plaques on Wednesday. He looks forward to being in the dunk tank. He enjoyed his birthday. The training of the new Senate is on Saturday at 9:00 in the morning. He told everyone to feel free to attend. He also stated that he will be out of town Thursday and Friday. X. GOOD OF THE SENATE 10 SENATE MINUTES 28-35/ October 26, 1998 SENATOR CANEPA (told a joke). She stated that it has been a pleasure working with everyone and she has had fun. The signs are nice but all of the statistics were about crimes against women and there also alot of crimes against men. SENATOR WEINBERG stated that this is his last Good of the Senate. He has had a fantastic experience and has learned alot. It has been good education in a lot of aspects. He will miss everyone. (He told a joke.) SENATOR KAWAZOE (told a joke.) He stated that it has been great working with everyone. SENATOR DAVY stated that everyone who is leaving will be missed and welcome to the new Senators. (She told a joke.) SENATOR RAMEY stated that the Senators will be missed and good luck in the future. It has been good working with SENATOR RAFFAIL and she will be resigning in a few months. SENATOR RAFFAIL thanked everyone who helped her. She stated that she felt it was important to bring a parental perspective to some of the issues that came up. She was impressed by the and concern and integrity that she witnessed here. She stated that being able to represent UNLV as an Urban Affairs Senator will always be a shining star in her repertoire. (She told a joke.) SENATOR FISK stated that SENATOR KAWAZOE stole his joke. SENATOR LAZAROFF is at auditions and he is going to see her in a play this week. He looks forward to working with the new Senators. He will miss SENATOR TRUJILLO and SENATOR CARTWRIGHT and wished them the best of luck. He stated that he has been blessed with excellent colleagues in his college like SENATOR HEMINGTON and wished her the best of luck. He stated that he will miss SENATOR RAFFAIL and she brought new views and kept us in the right perspective. He wished everyone who is leaving the best of luck. SENATOR BINETTI stated that she will miss the Senators that are leaving. SENATOR TRUJILLO has done a great job. She stated that Greek housing could be in the trailer park near school. SENATOR GARCIA spoke about each of the Senators who are leaving and wished all of them good luck. He made a flier that thanked the student body and his college for voting for him. He encouraged the other Senators to do this as well SENATOR MILMEISTER stated that he has been so impressed with SENATOR TRUJILLO. During his lifetime he has worked with a variety of people but by far the most selfish and egotistical people he has met in Student Government. He wants to be 11 SENATE MINUTES 28-35/ October 26, 1998 remembered by academic standards and Rebel Rave. He also stated not to hate him because he is beautiful. (He told a joke.) SENATOR WHITAKER stated that he is going to miss SENATORS ZARANTI and JORY because they made things more interesting. (He told a joke.) SENATOR JORY stated that he and Director Daley's organization is changing it's name. He doesn't have a joke because he doesn't feel these meetings should be fun. We are getting paid to serve the students and humor should not be allowed. This whole meeting was completely absurd and nobody with a conscience should accept their check. (He told a joke.) SENATOR HEMINGTON stated that Take Back the Night is tomorrow. She has had a really good time on Senate and has learned alot. (She told a joke.) SENATOR CORDONE stated that SENATOR FISK made two funny jokes tonight. It has been an honor working with everybody in here and he will miss everybody who is leaving. He stated that he likes the way SENATOR CARTWRIGHT shares her mind over and over. (He told a joke.) SENATOR CARTWRIGHT stated that this has definitely been a positive experience. She likes to make motions. She stated that SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH and VICE PRESIDENT CECI started out in the Senate seats and now they are in the Executive Board seats and they are meaner" than ever. She will miss Jim and he has been alot of help to her. (She told a joke.) SENATOR SHAPIRO thanked SENATOR TRUJILLO and stated that he is one of the 2 or 3 best Senators and people he has ever known. He will truly be missed. SENATOR AUER reminded everyone to attend Midterm Madness tomorrow. She thanked the Executive Board, DIRECTORS DALEY, RAMIREZ, JOHNS, DELAFONTAINE, BUSINESS MANAGER MOORE, and the Senators for their help. She stated that she will miss them all and she hopes that they will still see each other occasionally. (She told a joke.) SENATOR ZARANTI stated that he got off work early to come tonight. He commended SENATOR TRUJILLO on a great job. He stated that SENATORS AUGUSTIN and WEINBERG are two of his best friends and he won't be heckling everybody from the gallery. The Executive Board has done a great job and he won't be at the Senate banquet. The Senate Secretary told a joke. SENATOR TRUJILLO (told a joke.) He stated that it has been a long time and he has learned alot from the Senate. He was using it as a learning experience but if he got lucky somewhere along that way and made a difference to somebody than it was worth it to 12 SENATE MINUTES 28-35/ October 26, 1998 him. He told everyone to keep that in mind and to pick the battles that you can win and fight those ones as hard as you can. (He spoke about each of the Senators who are leaving and the returning ones as well. He also spoke about each of the Executive Board members and Business Manager Moore.) He stated that Terry Moore and Leia Fleishman were at the first meeting and he thanked them for being at his last. XI.
