" RE: Career Day 1993 Employer Survey I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some of the feedback we received regarding this year's Career Day and invite your input. The CP&P staff worked long and hard on this event and were pleased with its success. Over 500 organizations from a cross section of fields were invited to this years Career Day. After an aggressive telephone follow up campaign, 125 companies registered for Career Day and 120 turned out on campus that day; 96 in the MSU and 24 in T Beam Engineering Great Hall. It is estimated that over 5000 students attended the event from 9AM - 2:30PM on campus that day. Recruiters informally commented that students seemed prepared for the event, came with intelligent questions and presented themselves professionally. Our student hosts (coordinated through CSUN) were especially well received and did and excellent job in generating student turnout for the event. This is a credit to your programs and your professors and we appreciate the support of each of the colleges involved in this event. A formal survey was enclosed in the packets which were given to our recruiter participants. Thirty three (33%) of those were returned, complete with comments. I would like to share the results with you and invite your input as we plan for future such events. Overall, 90% of our corporate participants said their impression of Career Day was positive. Eighty five (85%) said the structure of the day was productive and accommodated their needs and 80% were satisfied with the student turnout and interest specific to their organizations. In addition, 70% told us they recruit and/or attend Career Days at other college campuses. Fifty five (55%) of our participants described their organizations as GROWING, 33% as STABLE and 13% as DOWNSIZING within the current economic climate. Eighty three (83%) stated they had current openings suitable for college students or recent graduates. Most suggestions for impovements were in reference to either the Great Hall being overcrowded or the desire on the part of some employers to see better turnout from the students in the colleges of Science & Math and Health Sciences. Although these areas suggest the need for some changes, we are very pleased with the general feedback we received from employers and students alike. Nevada 89154-6004 (702) 895-3495* FAX (702) 895-4661 CAREER DAY 1993 COMPANY EVALUATION T BEAM ENGINEERING Feedback was obtained from 16 of the 24 organizations that were located in the T Beam Engineering Great Hall. Overall the feedback was positive although there were concerns expressed from employers seeking health and/or science majors due to the limited turnout of those students compared to Engineering majors. It was also difficult for companies whose needs would have been appropriate for both locations ie..those wishing to speak to both engineering and accounting majors. Lastly, as the turnout on the part of employer participants was greater than anticipated, the space allocation per company was confined. Recruiters from hospitals, government contractors, utility companies, energy research, manufacturing and environmental engineering consulting were among those responding. A few organizations identified themselves as U.S. Airforce Health Professions, DOE, Nevada Power, Bally Gaming, IGT, LV Valley Water Dist., Hughes Technical and UMC. Following are the responses and comments from our survey: 1. Was your overall impression of Career Day positive? yes = 12 (75%) NO = 4 2. In your opinion, was the structure of Career Day events productive and accommodating to your needs? YES = 11 (69%) NO = 5 3. Were you satisfied with the student turnout and interest in your organization? YES = 11 (69%) NO = 6 4. Do you recruit or attend Career Days on other college campuses? YES = 9 (56%) NO = 5 5. How would you describe the employment status of your organization within the current economic climate? DOWNSIZING = 4 (25%) STABLE = 6 (38%) GROWING = 6 (38%) 6. Do you currently have openings that would suit college students or recent graduates pursuing entry level professional or career related opportunities? YES = 10 (63%) NO = 4 If yes, Part-time/Summer? = 6 Full time Professional? = 9 7. What position(s) does your organization have the greatest need for? Health physicists (2), industrial hygienist, environmental science, geologists, chemistry disciplines, hydrologists, marketing/sales, finance , biologists, chemists-organ.& inorgan., engineering computer sci, math, full biologists, Medical school students, physical therapists, social workers, engineers mech. & civil, accounting co-ops, EEs & Accountants, software & hardware engineers, graphic designers, artists & illustrators, nurses, physical therapy, pharmacy, radiology, respiratory, speech therapy & medical recorders, nursing and medically related fields. 8. What skills does your organization have the greatest demand for? Computer & writing skills, management, communication, engineering & technical skills, business & engineering skills, EE, Computer sci. & physics knowledge, nuclear engineering, EE/software/hdware engineering, graphic design, artists, C Programming, VAX/VMS experience, organic & inorganic chemistry, hydrology related skills. 2 T BEAM ENGINEERING GENERAL COMMENTS: -staff was very helpfuli -students I talked to were at early stages of their career and education, -well organized, good turnout! -few medical students came to engineer department, -there was a mix up with my booth location. -need accounting students with MIS background - not able to talk to any in engineering building, -need to control air in engineering building so as not to blow on exhibits, -building too cold & breezy, too many booths for size of building, -recommend the office of Personnel Management have booth in engineering building. -facility too small to accommodate number of companies, -the job fair was successful againl -where were all the geologists? -limited visibility, obtain a profile sheet on the invited company to better match the student with educational discipline and prospective company for potential employment, -needed to see more science applicants in engineering building, -location not conducive to medical students. CAREER DAY 1993 COMPANY EVALUATION MOYER STUDENT UNION Evaluations were obtained from 24 of the 96 organizations participating in Career Day in the Moyer Student Union. The feedback received in general, was overwhelmingly positive regarding the number of students participating and their professional demeanor. Recruiters responding to the survey represented diversity of organizations such as retail, insurance, financial planning, education, government, distribution, casino/hotel, protective services, defense and aerospace, and accounting. Following are the responses and comments from our evaluation: 1. Was your overall impression of Career Day positive? YES = 24 (100%) NO = 0 2. What position(s) does your organization have the greatest need for? police/corrections officers, casino/hotel & food & beverage workers, senior contract administrators-graduate level in related fields of marketing, procurement, legal Si finance,- tax preparers & receptionists, actuaries, accountants, systems programmers, -pharmacists & store managers, -career agents, -high school spanish teachers, special ed. & math, -sales positions, - officers, -manager trainees (4), -teachers, agriculture, health, business development, - distribution center supervisor, -sales agents, -sales/marketing, interns & engineers, - entry level management, -fire & auto claim representatives, -banking-people willing to start at entry level and work up. 8. What skills does your organization have the greatest demand for? Public contact individuals,- MBAs, related fields of finance, legal, procurement with at least 2 yrs experience, -tax knowledge & skills with public, -computer, actuarial, -interpersonal skills, computer skills, perhaps business background, - caring and lively people, -listening/communication skills very helpful, -those skills that make a competent officer, -people skills, -technical skills, - effective leadership, strong communication skills, excellent motivational abilities, college degree in business related field an asset, -motivation, leadership, hands on experience, -people orientation, -business majors & management majors, engineering also, -business management is a plus, -sales skills and a good GPA, -excellent communication skills, excellent customer service skills, organization skills, time management skills, problem solving skills, ability to analyze data, decision making skills, -customer service, cash handling, problem solving, -sales, recruiting. 2 MOYER STUDENT UNION GENERAL COMMENTS: -Well organized, the staff was outstanding (as usual), please try to place all law enforcement agencies against the walls- being out in the middle drives most of us crazy. -parking arrangements much better this year, thank you. -loved it! will be back next year. -awareness of opportunities in the insurance field needs attention, very helpful staffing! Well run job fair! -this has been the best career day in the seven plus years that our company has participated in. -I was impressed with the organization of the day even though there were not teacher candidates. Nice job! -our host was attentive and helpful! -Very pleasant, helpful staff; especially Tamara Hunt & John Zerkle. -Nice Career Day! We'll be back next year! -We are trying to get our name out to the community and this has helped a great deal! -Andy and Kenita were very friendly and helpful. Very happy with response and hope to participate next year! -This was our first year attending career day and we plan to come back year after year! -This was an excellent event 1! We have numerous interviews lined up. Your support was outstanding. We will attend again. The University did an excellent job. -Need better lighting in the ballroom, would be nice to have interviewing booths available. I had two students helping me throughout the day, Pat & Dan (I'm sorry I don't remember their last names). I really appreciated their help! Both were professional, very pleasant. Thank you. -Excellent Fair. Although it would have been nice if the visitor parking outside the Alumni building had been available. I was suppose to have a representative meet me there, but he couldn't park anywhere near the building. -Would suggest having on registration form if electricity is needed.. ANNOUNCEMENTS PRESIDENT KOSTMAN states that he attended a meeting of the Special Student Fee Committee regarding the proposed increase of the clinical lab science fee. The committee feels that they don't have to let the students know about the increase. This increase would effect class levels from 101 to 455. The committee meeting had no agenda or quorum. They don't feel that the are under the Nevada Open Meeting Law. About the basketball game where the fraternity Delta Sigma Phi was thrown out the matter is being looked into. If they were doing something illegal or disgusting then throwing them out would have been justified, but cheering for the team is not illegal or disgusting. Why were there boosters sitting in the student section? The sports are there for us. I will be having eye surgery on Saturday morning. Please no flowers or cards. VICE PRESIDENT HELD states that the last meeting for the faculty excellence award will be the 26th. There will be a reception and awards banquet at 4:30 on the 7th. There will be a self-defense seminar the Thursday after spring break. SENATE PRESIDENT PR0-TEMP0RE ROMERO states that all senators should introduce themselves to the Deans of their college to let them know who you are. Campus Directories are in and she would like help distributing them to the students. We are working on revising the path of the shuttle and we are working on getting more signs. Senator Romero states that there has been a lot of response to the Campus Directories. Senator Pobst states that the directory looks good but her number is wrong. Senator Sabatini states that we need to try to get the numbers right next time. Senator Rosenthal asks if she decided the layout? Anita Stockbauer talks about the upcoming Wellness Expo 93. Senator Turner asks when the event will be taking place? Would we be funding the food from ARA? When will we get a final request for the amount of money you will need? Senator Romero states that he has seen the scanners in the library and wanted to know who paid for them? ELECTIONS BOARD MEMBER KIECKER reads a letter from the Elections Director. See attached copy. Senator Romero asks who decided that the fines were not going to be counted? ENTERTAINMENT & PROGRAMMING DIRECTOR ZENTNER welcomes all the new Senators. APPROPRIATIONS BOARD DIRECTOR FINMARK states that when the budgets were originally done there was $2,000,000 set aside for Disability Awareness Day. She also apologizes for not getting the copies to everyone sooner. Senator Pobst asks what is the transfer out account? Senator Stephenson asks about the status of the Rebel Ski Club? Senator Yohe asks her to explain the situation again. So the fact that this was approved by the organizations board is irrelevant because they are no longer a recognized organization then this is out of order. Senator Rosenthal states that they came to you and they submitted a funding request and never showed up for their approval at the organizations meeting. ORGANIZATIONS BOARD DIRECTOR MARSHALL says Aloha. At the time the request was made by the Rebel Ski Club they were a recognized organization. We are working on getting a new list of contact names. We are working on a new system for the mail boxes. We have approved 13 new organizations in the last 2 months. Senator Romero asks why don't you take it back to the organizations? Senator Rosenthal asks how many meetings they had missed before 1 they submitted for funding? Senator Sabatini asks if the event occurred while they were an recognized organization? Senator Stephenson asks if anyone talked to the President of the Rebel Ski Club? Senator Yohe states that any organization should be recognized at the time the vote takes place. RESIDENT HALLS LIASON MARSHALL states that there is a self defense seminar coming up in the Dining Commons. HEALTH ADVOCATE AVILLA talks about the meeting with the insurance agents. Senator Smith came by the Health Center for a tour. We will be starting construction next week. There are 68 organizations/companies participating in Disability Awareness Day . NEVADA STUDENT AFFAIRS BOARD MEMBER SABATINI states that the Student Health Insurance Committee meetings are beneficial to students. President Kostman states that he will be testifying for the Committee for Higher Education and will be taking two Senators with him to Carson City. Point of Inquiry from Senator Yohe do we have an OSI Director? RULES COMMITTEE CHAIR ROSENTHAL states that there have been questions concerning speeches, everyone should still be giving speeches but the Rules Committee did not want to pressure anyone to give speeches. Senator Birdsell and Yohe have not yet returned. SENATE CONSTITUTION REVISION COMMITTEE CHAIR SMITH states that there is a meeting tonight. VII. Senator Sabatini moves to amend the motion to strike "..and including expenses for the Scavenger Hunt After-Party to be held at Carlos Murphy's on April 3, 1993...", seconded by Senator Siciliano. Move into a vote on the amendment. Motion passes 12-0-1. Senator Turner abstaining. Senators Birdsell and Yohe were ineligible to vote. Move in to a discussion on the amended motion. Senator Yohe states that we will only be getting $500 and we are still be spending $13 per person. Senator Siciliano states that she thinks that a lot of people will do it . Senator Romero states that a lot of people are already interested in entering . Senator Pobst asks if there is a sign-up for people? President Kostman states that the Senate put the Directors in their positions so let them make their own decisions. Senator Sabatini agrees with President Kostman. I was involved last year and it was great. President Kostman states that he fights for the students money and they should get to enjoy some of it. Senator Pobst asks why we can't have a bar-b-que after? How many people will fit in Carlos Murphy's? Senator Yohe states that he made a mistake. Murphy's is free and it sounds great. Motion to approve by Senator Turner, seconded by Senator Romero. President Kostman states that the mix up happened years ago. The money was ours to begin with and we will work it back into the Scholarship account. Move into a vote. Motion passes 15-0-0. C. Approval of Ed Marshall as the Organizations Board Director. Motion to approve by Senator Romero, seconded by Senator Smith. Move into a vote. Motion passes 14-0-1. Senator Pida abstaining . D.
