It's quite simple actually. For starters, the globe, Kokopelli, and the phrase "A World of Choice" are the design on the 1993 KUNV t-shirt avail-able during Marathon, our yearly, on-air fundrive. Additionally, we've selected "A World of Choice" to be our new moniker. For some time we've been banging our heads against the wall at-tempting to sum up KUNV's programming in a simple phrase. We think we've finally done it. Still confused? OK, here's the concept. We probably don't have to elaborate on the current, seemingly rapid, globalization process. As a web of media and economies network themselves globally in a manner unseen before now, Earth has become a smaller place. Events in Europe now take on a magnitude of importance once held only for neighboring states. We will probably soon surpass McLuhan's vision of a 'global village', if we haven't already. In an effort to tap in on this metamorphosis, in the past year, KUNV has gone to great lengths to expand our commitment to music and culture from around the world. CQDX, an experi-mental, morning world beat program has increased from two to five hours. Thanks to new station volunteers we also air Avaye Del, a Farsi language show, and Memories of Germany. These programs augment our other \vorldly shows Sabado Especial. Fantasia Musical (both in Spanish), Variance (in French), Reggae Happenings, and Exotic Excursions. OF CHOICE One of the potential problems with this Western (i.e. European not the Western United States) driven, new globalization is the loss of cultural iden-tity. The Western World's ability to re-make cultures in its own image is well documented (Christopher Columbus comes to mind). By the same token, many cultures have consciously made a choice to replace much of their own identity with things Western. As KUNV recognizes these changes, we're also asserting our individuality as Americans living in the Southwestern bioregion, hence Kokopelli. (All cultures should assert their autonomy in the face of the barrage of global homogenization.) We're very proud of our locally produced community affairs programs geared specifically to address the concerns of Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Southwest. Naturally Nevada, Point Blank, Spotlight On the Arts, Awareness, Time Out for Health, Sports Talk, University Focus, and Minutes with Maxson - each of these programs offers an opportunity to better understand ourselves and improve our desert lifeways. In our desire to 'think regionally, listen locally', we should also mention the addition of the syndicated news magazine High Plains News Service to our community affairs line-up, Tues-days at 7:30pm, right after Point Blank. As Kokopelli is a symbol of life and love, we would like to think of KUNV in a similar manner - a station offering a world of choice featuring music from Nevada to the far reaches of the planet and information linking Las Vegas to our neighbors around the globe. CQDX is a ham radio term for "Calling All Long Distance Stations" and is the title of KUNV's daily offering of world music. The show began nearly two years ago as a replacement for the nationally syndicated program Bug Radio. We started our own version of that show featuring rotating DJs playing a wide variety of tradi-tional and contemporary music from around the world. Since its humble begninnings, CQDX has grown from two to five hours, Monday through Friday from 9am to 10am. KUNV's support of world music was ini-tiated in the early days of the station with our Spanish language programs Sabado Especial (Saturdays, 7am-11am) and Fantasia Musical (Sundays, 7am-10am). For the uninitiated, here's a very brief overview. World music is separated into two major categories: traditional and world beat. Traditional music is the folk music of indigenous cultures and world beat is the electrified or Western in-fluenced music. The first attempt at an all encompasing world music show was Rob Banks' Inter-national Gamelon in the mid-1980s. Af-ter its demise, Exotic Excursions (Sun-days, 8pm-10pm) took the torch. World music has been around for as long as there have been two sticks to bang together in rhythm. But world beat, especially from the Western perspective, has been developing since the 1950's. Because of our proximity to the Caribbean and Cen-tral American countries, Latin music was (continued on page 11) Winter '92 MOUTHPIECE O 3 reparations are now underway for Marathon '93, KUNV's yearly on air fundraising drive! Along with Citizen Alert, KUNV produced the first weekly talk show in Nevada dealing with environmental issues. Since that time, the program has expanded its boundaries to examine local, regional, and national issues that impact Neva-dans and has hosted guests like Stuart Udall and Helen Caldicott. The environmental focus of the show has remained an important component as we've included a broader progressive agenda. This fall we added a new element to the show. Listener partici-pation is now possible and we encourage you to call in with your questions, comments, and opinions every Monday morning at 10am. The show re-airs Wednesdays at 7pm without the live call-in option. POINT BLANK Awareness The rapier wit and tongue of Las Vegas Review Journal colum-nist Jon Ralston hit the airwaves last fall and KUNV hasn't been the same since. Considered by many to be Nevada's leading journalist focusing on local and statewide politics, Jon hosts Point Blank every Tuesday night at 7pm. Jon regularly grills county commission-ers, senators and members of the assembly, opinion leaders, and others on the state of affairs in Las Vegas and Nevada. But don't let him do all the work. Winter '92 MOUTHPIECE O 9 P R O G R A M H I G H L I G H T S RADIO DRAMA SERIES EXPLORATIONS OF THE ART OF RADIO DRAMAS: AMERICAN AND INTERNATIONAL Soundplay, the best of contemporary radio dramas, continues on KUNV. This winter's installment features Horspiel, an overview of the development of the extraordinary tradition of radio drama in Germany and Austria after World War II. Program titles, dates, and times are listed in the sidebar. More than four decades after the end of the Second World War, many Americans hold conflicted feelings about Germany. On the one hand it evokes memories of Hitler, Nazis, and the Holocaust. On the other hand, the Federal Republic of Germany has been a strong NATO ally, industrial partner and competitor, and a thriving cultural resource. This contradictory and agonizing history continues to undergo re-examination within Germany, as well, and radio drama has often been at the center of the process. The revival of a significant place for drama and literature on German radio began in the immediate post-war period and led to strong departments of radio drama. Radio had to be rebuilt quickly to serve the exigencies of communication. It had to reach the entire nation. In order to be insulated from takeover by another predator like Hitler, radio had to be radically decentralized — thereby providing an opportunity for several innovative centers to flourish throughout Germany and ultimately to rival each other in their claims for discovering artistic talent and producing new plays by significant authors. Radio drama in Germany takes its place along with theatre, books, television, and film as part of the cultural life of the nation. The Soundplay Horspiel series, funded locally by the Nevada Humanities Committee and the American Bank of Commerce, provides an exciting opportunity to hear something of this vigorous tradition and offers a compelling insight into the art, culture, and history of post war Germany.
