ANNOUNCEMENTS SENATE PRESIDENT POLOVINA STATED THAT PRESIDENT BUNIN AND VICE PRESIDENT WILLARD WOULD NOT BE ATTENTING TODAY'S MEETING AS THEY ARE OUT CAMPAIGNING. SHE MENTIONED THAT THE PRESENT BUD BENNEMAN MIKE BUNIN RODERICK COLEBROOK ABSENT SCOTT BENNETT (EXCUSED) MELANIE ROSENBERG (UNEXCUSED) UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, LAS VEGAS/4505 MARYLAND PARKWAY/LAS VEGAS, NEVADA 89154/(702) 739-3477 SENATE SECRETARY HAD RESIGNED AND THAT SHE WAS TRYING TO IV. ANNOUNCEMENTS FILL THE POSITION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. SHE SAID THAT SHE HAD RECEIVED 5 APPLICATIONS SINCE LAST TUESDAY. SHE ALSO STATED THAT THE DEADLINE WOULD BE ON NEXT TUESDAY BY 5:00 P.M. SENATE PRESIDENT POLOVINA YIELDED THE FLOOR TO DR. WALTON WHO ADDRESSED THE SENATE ABOUT PROBLEMS ON CAMPUS CONCERNING ETHICS. HE STATED THAT HE HAD AN IDEA ABOUT INSTITUTING A CONFERENCE WHICH WOULD INVOLVE BOTH THE STUDENTS AND THE FACULTY. HE WANTED TO DISCUSS ISSUES SUCH AS STEALING, PLAGERISM, ABUSE OF TRUST, RAPE AND SEX PROBLEMS, AVAILABILITY OF CHANNELS FOR DISCUSSION. HE STATED THAT THE ONLY WAY IN WHICH THE PROGRAM COULD GET UNDER WAY WOULD BE WITH STUDENT INPUT. HE STRESSED THAT HE WANTED TO SEE PROGRESS NOW SO THAT CHANGES COULD BE IMPLEMENTED NEXT FALL. HE STATED THAT IT WOULD TAKE A COUPLE OF AFTERNOONS TO HOLD WORKSHOPS ON WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO ADDRESS. DR. WALTON CAN BE CONTACTED AT EXT. #3463, 4029, AND 3433 FOR MORE INFORMATION. SENATE PRESIDENT POLOVINA FURTHER ANNOUNCED THAT THE TAPE RECORDER BROKE DURING LAST WEEK'S MEETING AND THAT IS WHY THE MINUTES MAY APPEAR INCOMPLETE IN PARTS. SHE TOLD ALL THE DIRECTORS THAT WERE PRESENT THAT THEY SHOULD GET A COPY OF THEIR MINUTES TO SENATOR GONZALEZ, CHAIR OF THE RULES COMMITTEE. LASTLY, SHE STATED THAT THE EXECUTIVE BOARD NOMINATIONS WERE DONE SO THAT THE SENATORS COULD BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SENATE RULES. SHE APPOLOGIZED TO SENATOR RAMSEY THAT SHE HADN'T REMEMBERED TO TELL THE MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD TO PLACE HER ON A SECOND COMMITTEE AND THAT IT WAS HER FAULT. V. BOARD, COMMITTEE AND DIRECTOR REPORTS SENATOR GONZALEZ - DIRECTOR OF SENATE RULES COMMITTEE THE MEMBERS FORMED COMMITTEES TO MONITOR THE DIFFERENT AC-COUNTABLE ACTIVITIES OF THE SENATORS. SINCE NOT ENOUGH TIME TO ENSURE THAT ALL SENATORS GAVE REQUIRED SPEECHES PRIOR TO PRIMARY ELECTION, ALL WILL BE ALLOWED TO TO THEM FOR THE GENERAL ELECTION. EACH SENATOR MUST DO 2 SPEECHES NOT EAR-LIER THAN ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE GENERAL ELECTION AND WILL BE ALLOWED TO DO THEM ON ELECTION DAY. SENATOR KERSHAW FOR PAIGE ZIELINSKI - ELECTIONS BOARD ELECTIONS ARE GOING FINE. VOTES WILL BE TALLEIED TONIGHT. SENATE PRESIDENT POLOVINA FOR B.J. WILLARD - ORGANIZATIONS BOARD ORGAINZATIONS BOARD WILL MEET ON TUESDAY, MARCH 13 IN BEAM 106. TAMMY FOUNTAIN NEEDS QUORUM ON APPROPRIATIONS BOARD. ALSO, MEMBERS OF B&E AND HEALTH SCIENCES TO SUBMIT NOMINA- TIONS FOR FACULTY AWARD. SENATOR ELLIOTT - BYLAWS COMMITTEE NO MEETING BECAUSE DID NOT MEET QUORUM. THERE WILL BE A MEETING NEXT THURSDAY, MARCH 15, AT 1:00 P.M. PAT TUOHY - DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SERVICES SO FAR THIS SEMESTER, TYPING SERVICES HAVE BROUGHT IN $123.65 AND LECTURE NOTES $925.00. THERE WAS A MEETING ON FRIDAY, BUT NO QUORUM. TWO MEMBERS WERE REMOVED, SO NOW THERE ARE VACANT SEATS. REMINDER THAT HANDICAP AWARENESS DAY IS JAMAL ALLEN - DIRECTOR OF OFFICE OF STUDENT INFORMATION ALL IS GOING WELL ON THE OSI. TOMORROW WILL BE INTERVIEWING PAT TUOHY AND WILL BE TALKING ABOUT ALL OF THE SERVICES OF-FERED THROUGH STUDENT SERVICES. STARTING ON T-SHIRTS. THEY WILL POSSIBLY HAVE GAVEL AS EMBLEM AND WILL BE A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE FOR USE IN THE SOFTBALL GAME AGAINST THE FACULTY. ALSO, WORKING ON THE FACULTY/SENATE SOFTBALL GAME. OPEN DISCUSSION SENATOR FITZGERALD - HE FELT THAT THE PRICE OF THE PENCILS WAS STEEP. SENATOR TABOLA - APOLOGIZED FOR NO PAPER FOR NOMINATION OF FACULTY AWARD. STATED THAT HE HAS PICTURE OF THE TRIP TO FLORIDA THAT HE AND PAR TUOHY TOOK. ALSO, WANTED TO KNOW IF THERE WAS A DANCE TO BE SPONSORED BY CSUN ON MARCH 24, 1990. SENATOR BUNIN ANSWERED BY STATING THAT E&P TENTATIVELY PLANNED TO THROW A DANCE ON THE 17TH, BUT IT WAS NOT YET CONFIRMED; AND THAT IF THERE WERE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, CONTACT LISA G.. SENATOR ELLIOTT - NONE SENATOR PRATT STATED THAT HE SPOKE IN HIS ENGLISH 199 CLASS. HE ALSO STATED THAT IN THE FUTURE, THE SENATE SHE BE AWARE OF THE DATES OF THINGS THAT WE PASS BECAUSE SOME-TIMES THEY WILL TAKE EFFECT SOONER THAN WE THINK IE. THE SENATE REQUIREMENT TO SPEAK TWICE BEFORE EACH ELEC-TION. HE WAS ALSO ADAMANT ABOUT HIS ANGER AT THE FACT THAT THERE WAS AN ORGANIZATION IN THE ROOM NEXT DOOR THAT WAS SERVING WINE WITHOUT ADHERING TO THE ALCOHOL POLICY. HE STATED THAT THEY HAD NO WRISTBANDS AND THAT THE YELL SHOULD GET INVOLVED IN THIS ISSUE. FURTHER-MORE, HE QUESTIONED THE DOUBLE STANDARDS IN REGARDS TO THE ALCOHOL POLICY. FINALLY, STATED THAT KUNV WAS GIVING A BREAKFAST AT 6:30 AM AT 5471 PRINCE SCOTTY AT HIS FRATERNITY HOUSE. ALL SENATORS ARE INVITED. SENATOR SPILLER ALSO QUESTIONED IF THERE WAS IN FACT A DANCE ON THE 17TH. IF THERE WERE, TIMELINESS IS INAP-PROPRIATE AND THAT BETTER PLANNING WAS NEEDED. SENATOR MILLER - NONE SENATOR GONZALEZ STATED THAT THE RULES COMMITTEE WILL PROVIDE THE NECESSARY VERIFICATION FORMS FOR SPEECHES BY NEXT WEEK. HE WAS ALSO GLAD THAT THE SOFTBALL GAME IS UPCOMING. STATED THAT PENCIL ARE NECESSARY SO WE JUST HAVE TO PAY THE COSTS. FINALLY, HE REQUESTED THAT ALL VERIFICATION OF SPEAKING IN CLASSES BE GIVEN TO HIM. SENATOR MILORO - NONE IX. OPEN DISCUSSION (CON'T) SENATOR BUNIN STATED THAT HE SPOKE TO HIS POLITICAL SCIENCE CLASS. HE ALSO APOLOGIZED FOR MISSING THE ETHICS MEET-ING AND THAT FOR THE FIRST TIME HE ACTUALLY HAS NOTHING TO SAY. SENATOR YNIGUES STATED THAT HE WISHED KAREN SPLAWN WERE HERE AND QUESTIONED IF THE SENATE REALIZED THE IMPLICATIONS OF EUGENE T'S RESPONSE TO HIS LETTER TO THE EDITOR. HE STATED THAT IT IMPLIES THAT THE ENTIRETY OF CSUN IS IN-FRINGING ON 1ST AMENDMENT RIGHTS. HE SAID THAT HE SENT IN AN APOLOGY FOR ANY MISLEADING IN HIS LETTER. HE ADDED THAT THE YELL IS SETTING PRECEDENCE TO INTIMIDATE PEOPLE FROM WRITING LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. SENATOR RAMSEY STATED THAT SHE SPOKE TO HOTEL LAW. SHE ADDED THAT SHE HAD READ SENATOR YNIGUES1 LETTER AND THAT IT IS AN EYE-OPENER AND THAT THE YELL IS FORGET-TING THAT SENATORS ARE HUMAN, TOO. SENATOR COLEBROOK STATED THAT THE BEST DRESSED AWARD SHOULD GO TO MIKE BUNIN. HE ADDED THAT HE, TOO, HAD HEARD RUMORS ABOUT THE PARTY. STATED THAT HE FEELS THAT THE YELL OWES THE SENATE AN APOLOGY FOR MAKING IT SEEM LIKE ALL OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT WAS WRONG-DOING. HE ALSO FELT THAT THE YELL WAS WRONG FOR TAKING ON WHOLE GOVERNMENT. HE TOLD PAUL PRATT TO PURSUE THE ALCOHOL ISSUE. SENATOR SWANK STATED THAT THE PENCILS AT 28-CENTS EACH ARE NOT THAT EXPENSIVE. BEING THAT WE ALREADY PAY $1.00 FOR HOT DOGS FROM MARRIOTT, TO PAY 28-CENTS FOR A PEN-CIL IS NOTHING. HE ALSO ADDED THAT HE CANNOT SEE DANCE HAPPENING. STATED THAT WHILE SENATOR COLEBROOK WAS IN WASHINGTON HE BROUGHT BACK A ISSUE OF THE CORNELL DAILY SUN AND SUGGESTED THAT THE "YELLIN1 REBEL" SHOULD GET A COPY TO SEE WHAT A REAL COLLEGE PAPER SHOULD LOOK LIKE. AS FOR THE GREEKS, HE STATED, FOR EVERYBODY TO HAVE A GOOD TIME WHILE STAYIN OUT OF TROUBLE. HE ALSO ADDED THAT THE BIG WEST TOURNEY JOURNEY IS LEAVING TOMORROW AND THAT IF IT IS A GREAT SUCCESS THAT WE SHOULD AR-RANGE MORE OF THEM FOR ROAD GAMES NEXT YEAR. SENATOR BENNEMAN- STATED THAT HE SPOKE IN FRONT OF HIS IN-SURANCE CLASS. THE MSU DOUBLE STANDARD ALCHOOL POLICY IS WRONG. HEL ALSO ADDED THAT HE IS TIRED OF THE "OTHER OFFICE" INPOSING POLICY ON CSUN. CONTINUED THAT JOYCE GARCIA IS UNDER FIRE BY "UPSTAIRS" AND THAT CSUN NEEDS TO UNITE AND TAKE ANY CRAP FROM OUTSIDE IN-FLUENCES. HE WAS ALSO VERY PROUD TO SAY THAT THE TMC HAD OPENED UP THE REDGATE BLOCK ON THE WEST ED OF THE PARKING LOT. SENATOR KERSHAW- STATED THAT THE APPROATIONS BOARD WILL BE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR ORGANZATIONS TO RECIEVE MORE FUNDING ON THE 19TH OF MARCH. VERY GLAD TO THAT THE EDUCATION BOOTH RECIEVED 8 6 VOTERS FOR THE PRIMARY ELECTION. ALSO THANKED ALL THE PEOPLE THAT HELPED HER SORROITY RAISE OVER $7 000 FOR VALIRE PIDA. GALLERY: CHIEF JUSTICE DAN WALL- STATED THAT CONCERNING THE ISSUE WITH SENATOR YNIGUES AND THE "YELLIN1 REBEL", STATED THAT THE YELLS RESPONSE DOES NOT WANT YOU TO EXPRESS YOUR OPINION IN AN EFFECTIVE WAY. CONTINUED TO SAY THAT THE LETTER WAS NOT SIGNED AS A SENATOR AND THAT THE YELL IS INTERPERTING IT AS INTERFERENCE BY THE EN-TIRE STUDENT GOVERNMENT. WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE J.C. DOES NOT HAVE AN OPERATING POLICY, NEITHER DOES THE EX-CUTIVE BOARD OR THE SENATE. STUDENT SERVICES DIRECTOR PAT TOUHY- STATED THAT IF HE CAN FIND A LOWER PRICE FOR THE PENCILS THEN HE WILL TAKE IT. CONTINUED BY SAYING THAT THEY WERE CHEAPER LAST YEAR BECAUSE WE BOUGHT A LESSER NUMBER OF PENCILS. THE PENCILS FUNCTION IS TO LET STUDENTS KNOW HOW TO GET AHOLD OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT. SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE SMITH STATED THAT IDEAS ABOUT WORKING ON ETHICS ON CAMPUS WITH THE FACULTY WAS GOOD. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THE LACK OF THEM. SENATE PRESIDENT POLOVINA THANKED THE SENATE FOR PASSING THE EXECUTIVE BOARD NOMINATIONS. STATED THAT SHE TRIED TO PUT SENATORS ON COMMITTEES THAT RELATED TO THEIR MAJORS. SHE ALSO STATED THAT SINCE THE JUSTICE COUNSIL DECISION ELIMINATED HER OPPONENT FROM THE ELECTIONS, THAT THE SENATE WAS STUCK WITH HER FOR ANOTHER YEAR.
