Frank Gagliardi, director of the Jazz Ensemble, said he had been notified by officials of the Montereaux Inter-national Jazz Festival that UNLV's Jazz Ensemble would be one of only two U. S. university jazz groups to be invited to the two-week festival. ••This is one of the top festivals in the world," Gagliardi said. "It always at-tracts the cream of the crop of the jazz world — people like Ella Fitzgerald, Jimmy Smith, Dizzy Gillispie. You name them, they'll most likely be on the program." Gagliardi announced the invitation at Sunday's UNLV Jazz Ensemble concert in the Judy Bayley Theatre. He said that funds would have'to be raised to finance the trip for the ensemble. Last year Gagliardi's group per-formed at Donte's Club in Los Angeles and at Disneyland. Gagliardi said hf didn't know the other 0. S. university group invited. UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, LAS VEGAS 4505 Maryland Parkway Las Vegas, Nevada 89154 College of Arts and Letters Department of Music (702)739-3332 OFFICERS, SENATORS AND MEMBERS OF CSUN Our Jazz Program at UNLV is new in its' fourth year. In these four years it has became ranked with the best of programs anywhere in the country. In the past two years CSUN has funded seme of our trips to various Jazz Festivals in the West and the band has recieved top recognition as well as many awards to individuial players for best drummer, best trumpet player, and trombone player. On our tour last spring we were invited to perform at Disneyland where we killed them off! And, we are one of few college bands ever to perform in Donte's Jazz Club in Los Angeles. Now to the point of this letter: In Montreux, Switzerland each year is held the second largest Jazz Fest-ivals in the world. It comprises of only the best professional'musicians in the world, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Herbie Hancock, just to mention a few. Each year they invite two college bands and one high school band to perform from the United States. I sent in an application, and later they requested a tape of our band. I sent them the tape of the band (which incidentally was funded by the CSUN last spring) and much to my surprise I recieved an official letter of invitation from the festival committee and a personal letter of welcome from the Mayor of Montreux. Now instead of going to Montreux and back, which would be a waste of a golden opportunity, we plan to perform concerts to. London, Paris, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg at the finest of concert halls spreading great big band jazz and the name of our University. The tripwLll cost $28,000. We have raised #10,000 already ourselves and would be greatly indebted to CSUN for a nice chunk if you agree that the trip has merit. University of Nevada System An Equal Opportunity Employer
