Nov 9th 1902 60-A Mr. J Ross Clark Los Angeles Calif Dear Sir, I sent a report to Mr. Whittemore yesterday from the Vegas Ranch giving him all information gathered to the present. I found by depending on the Stewart Boys for advice and assistance I would not get all the cattle counted for sometime yet. I found on my arrival there 277 head of cattle in the pasture and after Stewart placing a lot of Indians at different watering places for seven days and nights in order to force all the stock to one common watering place. We got 70 more together- I let the Stewarts understand quite plainly that this was unsatisfactory and I must see and count the cattle and without much more expense on my part- We then agreed to the following plan: They to furnish four Indians to assist my man Smith for ten days if necessary to gather all cattle possible and put them into the pasture. Stewart to furnish all horses and board for Smith as well as the other help- This will simply be an expense of $2.00 per day for Smith while the round-up is being made- I believe they may pick up between four and five hundred head, but they feel confident there is over 500 head.I found the graveyard plat reservation to be something of a stumbling block.
