THE BULLETINNORTH PLATTE-SIDNEY PICNIC PARTYNORTH PLATTE SIDNEY JOINT PICNIC.(C. Hermansen, Correspondent)August 18th, North Platte and Sidney Shop Employes' met at Colton in a joint picnic. Eleven hundred were assembled on the grounds. North Platte employees were furnished a special train consisting of eleven coaches and one baggage car, leaving North Platte promptly at 6:15 a. m., arriving at picnic grounds at Colton at 9:45 a. m., on schedule time. There were 550 from North Platte, arriving at Colton. The train was stopped on the main line protected both ways by flagmen while a group picture was taken.All then went to the picnic grounds which was about three blocks from the railroad track.The first thing on the program was a concert by the Shop Employes Band of North Platte and Sidney Juvenile Band, after which various events were pulled off and the winners were awarded the prizes. The prizes were certainly worth going after, as there were about $2,000.00 worth of prizes that had been selected and donated by local business men at North Platte and Sidney. There were twenty-one events in all, such as boat racing, high dive, nail driving contest, broad jump and tug of war. We took particular notice of the tug of war between North Platte and Sidney. Superintendent Mulick, Master Mechanic Burnett, Safety Agent Garey, Train MasterJohnson, District Foreman Gilpin and Traveling Engineer Colligan, were pulling with the North Platte team and believe me it was "some pull" as it lasted nearly 15 minutes and resulted in North Platte winning over Sidney.Ice cream and lemonade were served free of charge all day and we are sure that the kiddies got their fill as 130 gallons of ice cream were consumed.At 4:00 p. m. the picnicers went to Sidney to take in the baseball game. Car's were furnished by Sidney Chamber of Commerce for the accomodation of all who cared to go. The game was between North Platte and Sidney the score being 13 to 2 in favor of North Platte.After the ball game all returned to the picnic grounds, where The Shop Employes Band of North Platte and the Sidney Juvenile Band gave another concert.Dancing commenced at 7:30 and lasted until 11:30 p. m. when all departed for home; the special train to North Platte arriving at 3:45 a. m.This was one of the best picnics that has ever been staged by the Shop Employes as every event was pulled off on schedule time and the best part of the whole thing was that not a single accident occurred on the entire trip, and much credit is due our officials for the manner in which it was handled because it was safety first, last and all the time.The various committees are not to be overlooked and deserve much creditas each member did his part to make it a complete success.NORTH PLATTE(C. Salto ARA Clerk are enjoying a vacation at Denver and Salt Lake.Mr. Wm. Putnam car inspector is on a two week vacation.Mr. J. Baker head time keeper and wife have returned from a vacation trip in Iowa and report a pleasant trip.Mr. C. Hermanson wife of chief car inspector and Mrs. M. Elias, wife of blacksmith are enjoying the sights at Long Beach, California.Mr. H. Woods car inspector has been called to Michigan account sickness in his family.M. Cragi, machinist, has been appointed drop pit foreman, as H. Eaton resigned to accept a position as machinist.Chris Tageder, car repairer commenced work for the Union Pacific 1891 pensioned 1917. Died August 16, 1923, after an illness of five years. He having seniority of 26 years with the Union Pacific Railroad. He leaves to mourn his loss two sons and two daughters, and a host of friends and fellow employees.
