Abstract

Oral history interview with Sharon Jennings and Shirley Harlan conducted by Claytee D. White on December 12, 2006 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. The interview begins with Jennings describing her upbringing in rural Long Island, New York. She explains how she got her start working in libraries during college and moving from New York to Pahrump, Nevada. Jennings then discusses working part-time at the Beatty, Nevada public library in the early 2000s, the financial situation of the branch, and their staffing issues. She then describes how they obtain resources, apply for grants, and the board members. Jennings then talks about the programs she wants to bring to the library, its future, and the challenges of grant writing. Lastly, Jennings and Harlan discuss the importance of public libraries to communities, and Jennings' living arrangements in Beatty.
