Biographical / Historical Note
Soroptimist International is a women’s volunteer organization focused on the improvement of women's lives through social and economic empowerment. The organization provides programs that emphasize access to education as a means to expand social and economic power for women and girls. The name "Soroptimist" loosely translates from Latin as "best for women." The first Soroptimist club was formed in 1921 by eighty women in Oakland, California, who had been barred from joining male service organizations. As of 2017, the Soroptimist International Sierra Nevada Region represents members in 53 clubs from Sacramento to Yreka, California and all throughout Nevada.
