Biographical / Historical Note
Station Casinos, Inc., was started by Frank J. Fertitta Jr. in 1976 in Las Vegas, Nevada as a single gambling facility. The facility was known as The Casino and underwent various expansions over the years before changing its name to the Palace Station in 1983. Fertitta’s son, Frank J. Fertitta III, joined the company in 1984 as vice president and director. Station Casinos continued expanding throughout the 1990s and establishing additional gaming facilities in Missouri including riverboat and dockside gaming in St. Charles in 1994 and Stations Casinos Kansas City in 1997.
By the late 1990s, Station Casinos, Inc. also opened additional casinos in Las Vegas including Boulder Station Hotel & Casino, Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel, and Sunset Station Hotel & Casino. In 1998, Crescent Real Estate Equities Company attempted to merge with Station Casinos. The proposed merger failed and both companies filed lawsuits. In April 1999, Crescent Real Estate Equities and Station Casinos, Inc. came to a settlement and Station Casinos moved forward to expand the company in Kansas City and in Las Vegas. In 2000, Station Casinos added Santa Fe Hotel & Casino to their list of Las Vegas properties. That same year, the company also sold its Missouri properties to Ameristar Casinos, Inc. In 2001, Station Casinos purchased Fiesta Casino Hotel in North Las Vegas and became involved in a joint venture with the American Nevada Corporation in Henderson to open Green Valley Ranch Station Casino.
Station Casinos joined with the Greenspun Corporations in the early 2000s on hotel and casino projects including the Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa, and the Aliante Station Casino. In July 2009, Station Casinos filed for bankruptcy after a period of declining sales from 2007 to 2008. The company’s founder, Frank Fertitta Jr., also died in 2009. In the following years, Station Casinos emerged from bankruptcy and the Fertitta family retained managerial control over the company. The company also saw steady revenue growth from 2011 to 2014. In 2015, Station Casinos became a publicly traded company. Since 2015, the company has conducted business under the name of Red Rock Resorts, which serves as the holding company for the Station Casinos brand.
