Abstract

The Las Vegas Professional Men’s Club Records (1984-1997) consist of the constitution, meeting minutes, and organizational documents of the Las Vegas Professional Men’s Club, later known as the Las Vegas Men’s Club (LVMC). The LVMC provided a social outlet for gay men in Southern Nevada. The bulk of the materials date from the 1990s and include membership lists, event fliers, promotional materials, financial documents, and information documenting the club’s fundraising activities.

Biographical / Historical Note

The Las Vegas Professional Men’s Club, known later as the Las Vegas Men’s Club (LVMC), was founded in 1984 by journalists Bill Schafer and David Dearing. It began as a social club for professional gay men that met for dinner and conversation in various restaurants and cafes throughout Las Vegas, Nevada. Aside from its social networking, the LVMC provided support for gay organizations and events, such as National Coming Out Day and the city’s Gay Pride celebrations. The LVMC also provided information regarding safe sex during the AIDS epidemic. The Las Vegas Men's Club disbanded in 1997.

Acquisition Note

Materials were donated in 2001 and 2009 by the Las Vegas Professional Men's Club; accession numbera 2001-011 and 2009-015.

Processing Note

Material was processed by Dennis McBride in 2009. In 2014, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Ian M. Baldwin revised and enhanced the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards. In 2018, as part of an archival backlog elimination project, Chantel Clark rehoused and arranged the materials, and revised the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards. In 2019, Sarah Jones added additional material to the collection and revised the finding aid.
