Biographical / Historical Note

Organizer and activist Terry Wilsey has been active in the Las Vegas, Nevada community since the late 1970s. Wilsey served as the president of the organization Nevadans for Human Rights and helped reignite the group after its period of inactivity from 1980-1981. Nevadans for Human Rights served to connect the gay community of Las Vegas and also promoted political and social efforts for gay rights. In 1982 Wilsey restarted the Nevada Gay Times, a second iteration of the Vegas Gay Times newspaper. Wilsey organized the first Vegas Pride event in 1983, a seminar held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and a joint enterprise of Nevadans for Human Rights, the Gay Academic Union, and the Metropolitan Community Church. Wilsey was a speaker at the first pride event and served as the organization's media contact for Las Vegas Pride in 1984. Wilsey co-founded the group "Aid for AIDS in Nevada" in 1984. In addition to his involvement in Las Vegas Pride, Nevadans for Human Rigths, and the Nevada Gay Times, Wilsey also volunteered for the telephone support charity the Las Vegas Gay Switchboard, contributed to the Stonewall Democratic Club of Southern Nevada, and supported the Gay Academic Union at UNLV.
