The National League of American Pen Women Las Vegas (Nevada) Branch Records contain eight scrapbooks documenting the club’s activities between 1950 and 1990. The National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW) brings together women interested in the arts for professional development, networking, and social activities. In 1951, Lucile Spire Bruner led efforts for the founding of the Las Vegas branch. The organization sponsored art shows, lectures, and scholarships. Members engaged in a variety of creative endeavors including poetry, short story writing, newspaper writing, painting, sculpting, and music. The scrapbooks include meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and photographs.
Lucile Spire Bruner, with other Las Vegas women, began calling for a Las Vegas chapter of the National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW) in 1950. In 1951, the Reno chapter of NLAPW sponsored the Las Vegas group and the branch officially formed. Members of the club worked in all forms of the arts such as painting, pottery, sculpture, music, and writing. Some prominent members of the club included Mildred Breedlove, Celesta Lowe, and Mary Manning. The NLAPW Las Vegas branch sponsored local and state art shows, hosted writers’ workshops, raised funds for scholarships, hosted community lectures about art, and encouraged the publication of members’ works. The organization is no longer active.
