Biographical / Historical Note
The Washington University College of Art, located in St. Louis, Missouri, was founded in 1879 when Wayman Crow, one of the founders of Washington University, sought to dedicate a new museum to his late son, Wayman Crow, Jr. Washington University created a new school to accompany the museum, becoming collectively known as the St. Louis School and Museum of Fine Arts. In 1906 the museum was separated from the school, relocated to Forest Park in western St. Louis, and rededicated as the St. Louis Museum of Fine Arts. In 1926 the School of Fine Arts moved to Bixby Hall on the current Washington University campus.
The School of Fine Arts retained its name until 2006, when Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton merged the Colleges of Art and Architecture to create the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, the school's current name as of 2019. The new school was named after Sam Fox, a St. Louis businessman, United States Ambassador to Belgium (2007-2009), and alumni and trustee of Washington University.
